The weather could not have been more perfect for our golf outing this year - plenty of sun, comfortable temperatures, and a nice breeze. Our group of 75 golfers had a great day out on the golf course! Once again, we held the outing at Scenic View Country Club in Slinger and they did another fine job hosting the event. Our best-performing foursome was the group of Pat Dwyer, Rick Leitel, Don Leitel, and Kevin Petersen who finished with an 11-under 61. Two teams were right on their heels, finishing just one stroke off the pace. We recognized our "Average Joe" foursome which, this year, was actually a "fivesome." The group of Dean Engelbert, Jim Nugent, Joe Stoll, Gary Boley and Kelley O'Brien finished with 4-under score of 68. We also recognized our highest scoring group. Finishing at plus-8, just 19 strokes off the pace, was the group of Curt Bricker, Terry Buss, Jay Sadlon, and Tom Ganther. Flag event winners were Justin Lemerande (2), Kevin Petersen, A.J. Ottow, Todd Kolb, and Pat Dwyer. Each received a gift card and what can only generously be described as a smattering of applause from a rowdy (if not skeptical) audience. There were no hole-in-ones to report this year, so the $10,000.00 prize offered through HNI Risk Services was unclaimed again. One golfer did come up just a foot or so short of winning the money.... The group tried a new approach to the 50/50 drawing this year, using a coin toss to systematically eliminate participants. In the "practice" round, Kevin Petersen won Maine lobsters donated by Hunter Panels. When it came time for the real deal, it was Bill Moody who walked away with the top prize of $290.00. Many thanks to everyone who attended and everyone who donated prizes for our door prize drawings. And a very special thanks to our event sponsors!

A Great Day for a Great Outing! The weather could not have been more perfect for our golf outing this year - plenty of sun, comfortable temperatures, and a nice breeze. - NRCA's Nominating Committee is in the early stages of identifying candidates for NRCA vice president and director for terms that will start in June 2015. If you are interested, please contact Bill Good at the NRCA office. - NRCA has launched a website, www.everybodyneedsaroof.com, which offers useful resources for consumers. - NRCA's National Roofing Week was held July 6-12 to increase recognition of the significance of roofs to every home and business in the U.S.; promote the roofing industry's good deeds; and emphasize the value of professional roofing contractors. A roof is one of the most important components of a home's or business' structure, yet it often is taken for granted until it falls into disrepair. The events of National roofing Week called attention to the essential roles roofs and professional roofing contractors play in every community.

Updates From Washington, DC NRCA and other groups are working with Congress on new legislation to reform the depreciation schedule for certain energy-efficient commercial roof systems. NRCA has long supported depreciation reform for commercial roofs because the current 39-year depreciation schedule creates an incentive for many building owners to delay full replacement of older, failing roofs in favor of limited, piecemeal repairs. The proposed legislation would create a new, 20-year depreciation schedule for commercial roof retrofits that meet the ASHRAE 189.1 – 2011 energy-efficiency standard. The grassroots efforts from NRCA members to build further support in Congress will be critical.

OSHA News - OSHA has created a Stop Falls Web page. - When the weather forecast calls for high heat and humidity, that's the time to visit OSHA’s heat illness web page for guidance on how to protect your employees against the effects of hazardous heat index. Heat illnesses most likely happen when employees are not acclimatized to the heat. Acclimatization - which are changes in the body to build tolerance to the heat - is a critical part of preventing heat illness.

o Workers should get used to hot environments by gradually increasing exposure and take frequent

breaks for water and rest in the shade. o During a rapid change in excessively hot weather, even experienced workers should begin on the first

day of work in excessive heat with 50% of the normal workload and time spent in the hot environment, 60% on the second day, 80% on day three and 100% on the fourth day.

o New workers and those returning from a prolonged absence should begin with 20% of the workload on the first day, increasing incrementally by no more than 20% each subsequent day.

o Full acclimatization may take up to 14 days or longer depending on factors related to the individual or the environment.

Find out more at the Heat Illness Web page.

NRCA is no longer supporting the "direct-link" program for purchases made from the NRCA bookstore. In the past, NRCA had offered to pay a dividend to affiliates like WRCA when bookstore purchases were made as a result of a link from our website. As an alternate, NRCA will be supporting a "promo code" program as an alternative, The new program doesn't provide a benefit for the chapter, but it does allow members to receive a 20 percent discount on bookstore purchases by using a discount code when checking out.

The discount code for WRCA members is: WRCA 20. To visit the bookstore, click the banner above. If you have any questions about the program or how to use the discount, please contact the WRCA office.

By The Numbers Since 1970, workplace fatalities have been reduced by more than 65 percent. Occupational injury and illness rates have declined by 67 percent. Worker deaths are down from about 38 a day in 1970 to about 12 a day on 2012 while worker injuries and illnesses are down from 10.9 incidents per 100 workers in 1970 to 3.4 incidents per 100 workers in 2012. OSHA was created in 1970 and is likely one of the reasons for the decline along with the changing nature of the U.S. economy.

Out of the 4,175 worker fatalities in private industry in 2012, almost 20 percent were in the construction industry. Four causes account for about 55 percent of the construction industry fatalities: Falls (34.6%), followed by Struck By Object (9.8%), Electrocution (8.1%), and Caught-In/Between (1.6%).

39 percent of Americans report that they are neither “consistently liberal” nor “consistently conservative," a 20-year low in the number of people who fall in the middle of the ideological spectrum. Not surprisingly, 73 percent of Americans who report they are consistently liberal have an unfavorable view of Fox News. 71 percent of Americans who report they are consistently conservative have an unfavorable view of MSNBC.
