ESSAY WRITING SECOND PLACER
WISDOM’S GOODNESS TO GREATNESS PROCESS
I’m now one of the ABC360’s Top teachers, recognized with
several awards being a model, an achiever and a leader yet I’m to-
tally aware that the journey going to the place I’m supposed to be
will never be that easy.
For 11 years of being employed all I thought about was to
earn money- a lot of money and then later I observed a cycle, check
- pay work-pay bills- work…, transferred from one job to another yet
less getting paid until such time that epiphany came to me searching
for my purpose beyond not just merely existing but someone who
could leave an impact on someone else’s life or even to the society.
So a couple of years back, I applied in ABC360 without any clue of
what lies ahead. I’m an undergrad-teacher by the way so at least all
I know was it’s an online teaching job.
“For a couple of years I have watched people teach. I have
looked at the best and some of the worst. A colleague said to me one
time “They don’t pay me to like the kids, they pay me to teach the
lessons, the kids should learn the lessons. I should teach it! They
should learn it! Case closed.” And then I said kids don’t learn to peo-
ple they don’t like. "Can we stand having more relationship? Yes, Ab-
solutely! Will you like all your students? Of course Not! And even if
we don’t like them all, they can never ever know it, so teachers be-
come great actors and great actresses and we come to work when
we don’t feel like it and we listen to policies that doesn’t make sense
and WE-TEACH-ANYWAY!...because that’s we do. Teaching and
learning should bring joy. Every child deserves a champion! An adult
who never gives up on them, who understands the power of connec-
tion and insist that they can possibly be regardless of their economic
status or cultural background” – wisdom from Ms. Rita Pierson.
“I thought that teaching has to do with sense of humor, au-
thority, respect, mastering the content of your classes. Of course
teaching has to do with all these but for those kids who were lost so
much of self-confidence, teaching as a leader shows an outstanding
effect.” –by Mr. Azul Terronez an inspiring Ted Talk speaker and
highly regarded teacher on his take of “What Makes a Good Teacher
Great?”
By: Gilbert O. Torcedo (Gibs, PBC01)
One thing that I didn’t seriously do before is to “walk the talk”. Often times we tell our students to take care of our environment and yet they know for sure that we do not take that seriously until I took part-in an environmental conversa-tion activity named as “Tree Planting/ OPLAN HAWAN.” By setting an example, now we don’t just tell them to engage in saving our planet. That way it makes us more credible From being good to becoming a great teacher, I learned to humble myself before students.

I PRAY MORE
I have never been a religious person but I would only pray when
I remember for selfish things that would benefit me, I used to
pray that God would send me tangible, lavish things that were
attainable when I wasn’t gifted with the car I wanted or money I
needed to spend on worthless things. However when I became
part of these beautiful children’s lives, I’ve began to pray every
night. Some of the pain and heartache that these little souls en-
dure on a daily basis is unimaginable. I’m so humbled by their
strength and courage. In the scheme of things, my problems are
like comparing molehills to mountains. I pray each night for their
safety, their struggles and most importantly-their future.
LEARNING WHILE TEACHING THEM:
Their innocence and honesty gives me hope for the future. “I have
learned that the bad days can turn into great one. Ice cream makes eve-
rything better and that look old whenever I don’t groom myself well. I’ll
be forever grateful for all the lessons that we learn together, for the ex-
periences that we share and most importantly for the lessons that these
kids have taught me.
Thank you ABC360 family and to all of my students for making my once
broken spirit whole again.”
Happy to share these blog inspired thoughts!
I’M MY BEST SELF WHEN I‘M WITH MY STUDENTS:
I’m a confidant, a nurse, a counselor and my acting skills are
extraordinary. My comfort zone is a place I can interact with
children and change their lives.
LITERALLY CREATING THE FUTURE:
I’m teaching our future generation’s doctors, lawyers, engi-
neers…you name it! I have a hand on what’s to come. I am
responsible for making difference in these children’s lives and if
it wasn’t for my wonderful teachers, I may not be interested in
furthering my education.
“Every time I have been
asked what degree I’m
pursuing, my response is
“EDUCATION.” I’m going
to be a teacher, the
comeback? “Why would
you choose that career?
It won’t even bring you
fortune.” A lot of money
is what they meant. Little
do these people know
that I am in the place in
my life where I’m exactly
meant to be, the greater
version of me.
Everyday I’m exposed to those young Chinese stu-dents who look up to me regarding everything- from my wardrobe to my action. They turn to me for direction. At no point in my life have I never felt more important and motivated. Teaching has shaped me as a person and changed my life in ways that I could have never imagined possible.
