KIMI wish that I could understandThe inner workings of God’s plan

To know might ease the pain and acheThis feeling of loss might I then shake

I know the pain is not just mineFor I can hear the angels crying

So I asked God, why is it this way?And from my soul I heard Him say

I know you long for your loved oneBut her mission there on earth is done

She’s not gone though, not like you thinkYou’re connected still by an unbreakable link

The link is love and it lasts foreverIt’s bond is strong and can’t be severed

So why, you ask do the angels cry?Listen closely, I’ll tell you why

They cry because they feel your anguishAnd in their hearts they so much wish

That you could see through angels eyesSo you would learn that no one dies

She’s with you right now as we speakIn fact, she just kissed you on the cheek

And though you might not understandAll is well and just as planned

To our valued readers,

Garrett and I want to personally thank you for reading Wise Woman Magazine. This magazine is Kim’s passion. She enjoys seeing every picture, reading every story and sharing it with you every month. We appreciate all of the emails, phone calls, Facebook posts, and help that we have received during this extremely difficult time of Kim’s illness. It has been heartwarming for us to see how many people truly love Kim and the lives she has touched. We know she is special and it’s great to see others think so too! Kim has been involved in the community for many years, knows many people, and has attended many events, so most of our readers know Kim personally. If you would like to share with us how Kim has inspired you, motivated you, or helped you, we really would love to hear the stories. Please email them to us at [email protected].

Sincerely, Scott and Garrett Tinkham

The holiday season stirs our memories, our emotions, and our dreams. It’ is a time of celebrations,

decorations, gifts, and communication. Some people, with overflowing calendars, are stressed by a lengthy to-do list. Others are alone, and the silence and absence of activity is painfully deafening. No matter what your level of activity is this holiday season, make civility your focus. Stop Pause and really “‘see”’ those you come in contact with. Too often, we forget the purpose behind all the activity. Don’t let the “‘to-do”’ list become so important that you run over others in the process. Remember, there are those many who are lonely, hurting, and in need. You could be the one who brightens their day and lightens their load by a simple act of kindness.

Civility in Public Places Driving, parking, waiting in lines, and navigating through crowds can make even the sweetest person grumpy. Being thoughtful and polite is not easy to do when you’are stressed. Before you venture out to go shopping, make sure you’are dressed comfortably and you’have had a bite to eat. Pinched toes and growling stomachs do not make for good attitudes. Before you can care for others, you must first care for yourself. Civility is Giving Civility is giving of yourself to others. Be on the

lookout for creative ways to be kind. Family members should top the list. Treat those closest to you at least as kind as you would thea strangeryou want to impress. A kind word, a helping hand, or a smile can be an unexpected gift thatcan brightens another person’s day.

Twelve Days of Kindness This holiday season, give the gift of kindness. On your own, or with your family, make a list of twelve random acts of kindness you can do duringover the holiday season. Starting with Dday one1, see how many times you can do that random act as you go about your day. Maybe it would be opening the door for others. On Dday 2two, move to your second random act of kindness. It might be letting someone go ahead of you to make a purchase, or paying for a cup of coffee for the person in line behind you. Keep a journal of each act, how you felt, and how others responded. The gift of civility, given from a caring heart, has the power to change the reality of those touched. Maybe twelve days will turn into a year of random acts of kindness! Check out our “Caught in the Act!” Civility Cards! They’re a gGreat way to acknowledge another person’s act of kindness! http://www.finaltouchschool.net/prod_caughtinactcards.htm. ■

Have you heard the term O2O yet? If you haven’t, you will. It stands for Online to

Offline and it is the newest strategy in marketing. It is actually considered to be one of the top trends to shape small businesses in 2011. While most small businesses have been focusing on getting online this year, the trend next year will be to integrate the online marketing with the offline marketing. As our famous Publisher Kim Tinkham says, “In this high-tech world, people need high-touch.” She is absolutely right! The O2O marketing strategy provides a more

personal experience by bringing people from your online networks to your offline networks. This is done by connecting

and engaging with people online and then inviting them to your store, a networking event, a Chamber meeting, or even lunch. I have met many people “in real life” that were online friends or connections. Some have turned into great friends and some are now clients. There were many predictions this year about traditional marketing being dead. While it may have slowed down, it definitely seems to be making a comeback. People miss “seeing” people, the handshakes, and real conversations. Networking groups have increased nationwide, thanks in part to the popular site Meetup.com. I’ve always believed that you need a combination of both traditional and technology styles of marketing. This past year I’ve written about how to establish an online presence for your business and the importance of using social media marketing. Now, it’s time to integrate that with offline meetings and events. Online and offline marketing will be working together!

Virtually Yours Tip of the Month: Add the O2O strategy to your marketing plan for 2011 and set a goal of growing your social media networks by five new connections a week. Make it a point to personally engage with those new connections and get to know them. ■

Discovery is the key to personal and business success. It is necessary for growth and development. By definition, discovery is the process

of moving forward into charted but well traveled paths. It is looking at old directional plans and seeing new areas to discover and journey. For business to continue moving forward toward expected goals, we must look continually at the plans, the decisions and the product of our past work. We must examine what has brought us to this place and envision what discoveries are needed to take us forward. The economy is in a scary condition, at best. Businesses all around are failing or scaling back. New ideas are needed to move forward. Now is the time to grow not fail. A word of warning as you begin planning new steps. Don’t fall victim to what I like to call the Columbus Complex! That is trying

to find something that is already there. Remember, just because there may be no visible tracks on your path does not mean others have not gone on this way before! And that is the key. Learning to

learn from the experiences, successful or not, of others in your field. Call in outside assistance to gain a new perspective on your business. Input from outside can challenge the way we think and see what is around us. Throughout history, the economy has experienced periods of weakness. How were these challenges met? What steps were taken that produced more millionaires during and following “The Great Depression”? What new products need to be added to your offerings? What needs to be dropped to increase the bottom line of profitability? What training is needed to improve staff and management? This is the time to begin to reformat your personal and business plans. Discovery truly is about seeing old things in new ways. Look around you. Are things fresh and new or does everything look as it always has? Perhaps change will require altering hours or sprucing up your look - new displays, fresh coat of paint, etc. Be open to change and soar! ■

There are tendencies and traits that make individuals more likely to be better cooks but

most Chefs would agree that there are no natural cooks. It is certainly advantageous to be born with a sharp palate or to parents who instill a sense of culinary adventure and discovery in their progeny. Grow up eating your way through the bleak landscape of modern convenience foods and you may find the battle to be the next Iron Chef a tad elusive. Grow up on a farm or in a family that eats real food and honors the connection between the land, the food, and the people, and your culinary prospects will already be improved. The presence of talent and “natural” ability is virtually always the result of structured training, hard work, determination, and mentoring. Culinary ability is not a genetic trait. Great cooking is about technique, not recipes, and behind every recipe is a set of techniques that a solid technician knows are vital to a desired outcome. The physical and chemical reactions that happen to food in the course of preparing a meal are immutable laws. Sure, Grandma never measured anything and she was the best cook ever. More likely, you witnessed her in the latter stages of her learning curve when she made one of the 20 dishes in her repertoire for the thousandth time. Chefs can whip out cream sauce without a recipe because they’ve made it hundreds of times. That same Chef will meticulously measure the ingredients for crème brûlée every time and observe the exacting process that produces a perfect result. Either scenario requires time-tested techniques. Most of the time cooking isn’t dangerous but it can be intimidating. Seeking a good foundation that translates into proper technique creates a sense of comfort and well-being in the kitchen that translates into confidence. It can be as simple as learning how to use a knife, eating in a great restaurant, or befriending a talented culinarian. We eat twenty-one or more meals a week. That’s got to be worth a little effort. ■

WISE WOMAN OF THE MONTH

By Keitha Story-Stephenson, D.S.

“A person’s true strength is in their character.” These are the personal words that best describe the thoughts and actions of Wise Woman Magazine’s

December Wise Woman of Month, Deborah Lynn Mann. Her life and her daily involvement in her community reflect the character of leadership and commitment that is demonstrated by Deborah before others. Deborah, 45, has lived a life of involvement. Professionally, she is the President, CEO and Co-owner of Mann Refrigeration, Inc. A position she has held for 19 years. She has resided in Paradise, Texas for the past 20 years. She has dedicated her life to improving the community and county in which she lives. Serving most recently as a member, Ambassador, and Director of the Paradise Chamber of Commerce, Deborah offers the invaluable gift of joy and inspiration to her fellow business leaders. She promotes and speaks on the behalf of the Chamber at the majority of all networking functions she attends. Deborah is a lover of people. She examples the positive approach to life needed to carry others through difficult times. Her mindset is an inspiration to her family, friends and all who have the honor of knowing her. “My favorite passage from the Bible is 1 Thessalonians 5:11 wherein it states, ‘Encourage one another and build each other up’. I feel that it has not been a successful day unless I have made someone smile, offered my assistance to someone in need, and completed at least a few items on my list of things to do.” Deborah’s involvement is a dizzying list of responsibility and commitment.

She is a member and Ambassador of the Bridgeport Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Decatur Chamber of Commerce, Association of U.S. Business Owners, Area Business Women’s Network, NFIB, Better Business Bureau, RSER, NAIC, Ladies Auxiliary VFW, World Affairs Council of DFW and the Paradise Band Boosters where she has served as Vice President for the past two years. Educationally, Deborah is an alum of Weatherford College, Howard Payne University and Texas Woman’s University. Her group Capstone Project for TWU EMBA Program was the business plan for a “Center of Excellence for Women in Business”, accepted by the TWU Business School of Management. Academically, Deborah is a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and Phi Kappa Honor Society. She lives the words of Malcolm X, “The future belongs to those who prepare for it today.” - A personal favorite quote of Deborah’s! When asked about her prize possession, her gentle, sensitive side was revealed. Deborah stated that a prized possession should come from inside. “It should be something that you take with you everywhere you go; something you can share, but that cannot be taken away from you. My memories are my most prized possession.” This passion is a testimony to the impact Deborah has on the lives around her. Deborah lives to encourage and inspire others. Her favorite gift is a smile and a word of encouragement. She offers a word to other women seeking to live up to their potential. “...to look deep inside themselves and ascertain exactly what it is that would bring them the most contentment and satisfaction in work or any other aspect of their lives. I know from personal experience that being good at your job is not as rewarding as doing something you love for a living.” Deborah believes that women have a unique place in business and community building. “Their maternal instinct is over what they feel connected with...It has to mean something to them. Once they are attached, they are giving of themselves and their possessions to help support what they feel connected to.” Deborah has discovered what she is connected to- her community, her friends and her family! And we are honored to have her as a part of our world. She truly is a perfect choice for Wise Woman of the Month. She serves her community with dignity and grace. In this case, the best woman for the job is a MANN! ■

Take Care of Texas This Holiday SeasonMany cultures celebrate holidays in

December. This year, try following a few simple tips to help you reduce waste, save energy, and save water while you enjoy your holiday time with friends and family: • Take reusable cloth bags for holiday

shopping. Reusable bags can also be a great way to package your gifts!

Send recycled-content or electronic greeting cards; or to add a personal touch, make your own using pieces of last year’s cards.

• Useclothnapkinsandreusabledishes, glasses, and silverware for your holiday party. To save both water and energy when cleaning up, make sure you wash full loads of laundry and dishes.

• Compost leftover food scraps. Tolearn how, check out Mulching and Composting: a Take Care of Texas Guide.

• Recycle your live Christmas tree orbuy a potted Christmas tree and plant it after the holidays. Check with your city to see if they have a Christmas tree recycling program.

• If giving electronic gifts, look forEnergy Star-labeled products. Buy rechargeable batteries to accompany the electronics.

• Need to replace your holiday lights?Upgrade to energy-eff icient strings of light-emitting diode (LED) lights, which use 75 percent less electricity than incandescent strings.

Emily, I recently got into a fender bender and I received an estimate for $1327.45, but I have a $1000 deductibles should I file a claim on my insurance? Will my insurance go up for filing a claim? What is the best direction to go? — Kris B.

Dear Kris, The question you have asked has multiple answers. First of all I would like to point out that high deductibles are cheaper per month on your insurance, but can end up being more costly when it comes to making a claim. I cannot give you any guarantee of your insurance going up or down

if you file a claim, (I would need more information on the accident and that is really a question for your claims department with your current insurance carrier) but I can tell you that it is a possibility.

The increase may not occur within your current policy period, but you could notice an increase on your next policy period. Every company charges for previous accidents differently – but you could start receiving a surcharge from filing this claim for the next 3 to 5 years! By having $1000 deductibles you are committing to pay for the first $1000 to repair your vehicle and the insurance company is committing to pay any amount above that. The amount we are really talking about being paid is $327.45, and that is a choice you are going to have to make on how it gets paid. Are you going to be in a financial burden paying the extra $327.45? Do you have extra income to place towards a possible future increase on your insurance? I am sorry I am unable to give you clear answers to your questions, but I can tell you what I would do in your situation. If it was me in your situation I would pay the extra $327.45 and not file a claim. I hope this information was helpful and guides you to the right decision for your current situation. ■
