A U T U M N P R O D U C E Nutrition experts agree that most Americans would be healthier if they ate more fruits and
vegetables. As summer fades into fall, cool-season crops once again are in season.
You can find fresh fruits and vegetables at farmers markets, roadside stands, and groceries
across Indiana.

V O L U N T E E R O R I E N TAT I O N A N D F O O D P A N T R Y T R A I N I N G On a recent Saturday morning, our volunteers and board members came together for some
much needed training. We enjoyed great food too. It was a wonderful opportunity for the new-
comers to meet the seasoned
volunteers. A big thanks to
everyone who helped make
the morning go smoothly.
Why have training? In De-
cember of 2005, Grace Center
Inc. was established. The food
pantry opened its doors the
following September. Last
month marked seven years of operation. Capturing the history and examining our mission, the
Grace Center board relayed the passion and purpose of the pantry to our volunteers. The train-
ing also informed the volunteers of the requirements that must be fulfilled. Other information
given included: our Hoosier Hills Food Bank membership, donations, USDA distributions, eligibil-
ity guidelines, Civil Rights, and the always important record keeping.
I appreciate our volunteers and they need to be equipped with the right information to per-
form their roles. They take time out of their busy schedules to serve others with compassion
and without discrimination, bias or judgment. It's not for everyone. But our volunteers shine
bright. Be sure to thank them for all they do. Grace Center can't exist without our wonderful
volunteers. Steve Fichtner, President of Grace Center Inc.
H O M E F O O D S A F E T Y MYTH: I use bleach and water to sanitize my countertops and the more
bleach I use the more bacteria I kill.
FACT: There is NO advantage to using more bleach. In fact, overuse of
bleach can be harmful because it is not safe to consume. To create a sani-
tizing solution it is recommended that you use 1 tablespoon of unscented
liquid bleach per gallon of water. Flood the countertop with the solution,
allow it to sit for a few minutes, then pat with clean, dry paper towels or allow to air dry. Any left-
over sanitizing solution can be stored, tightly covered, for up to one week. After that, the bleach
has lost its effectiveness. For more info visit: http://fightbac.org

Scatter apple pieces evenly over the top of the batter then sprinkle evenly with 1 tablespoon sugar. Sprinkle lightly with cinna-mon. 4. Bake in a preheated 400-degree oven until cake is golden and a tooth-pick inserted in the center comes out clean, 25 to 30 minutes.
