MontgomeryTHE RURAL SIDE OF

Montgomery County, Maryland is home to a surprising number of rural areas. In 1980, the Montgomery County Council made one of the most significant land-use decisions in county history by creating an Agricultural Reserve, or what the locals call the “Ag Reserve.” Heralded as one of the best examples of land conservation policies in the country, the Ag Reserve encompasses 93,000 acres, almost a third of the county’s land resources.

Visit farms in the Ag Reserve in the spring for pick-your-own strawberries, blueberries, tart cherries, thornless blackberries, red raspberries, and tomatoes. In the fall, families head out to the pumpkin patch, and during the holidays, they cut fresh trees. From the summit of Sugarloaf Mountain, hikers can look out over the county’s pastoral patchwork of farms and villages, a countryside view largely unchanged since the 19th century.

EPIC FAMILY ADVENTURESMontgomery County is home to two world-class zip line courses. Go Ape in Rock Creek Regional Park in Rockville is home to six zip lines, including a rad skateboard zip line, 44 unique crossings like the Stirrups, Twister, and two

Tarzan swings. The Adventure Park in Sandy Spring consists of 13 different courses in various degrees of difficulty. The Adventure Forest is the largest forest climbing park in the nation. Night climbing, or “Twilighting,” is a new feature where the entire park is softly lit with LED lighting.

HIKING HOT SPOTSSugarloaf Mountain in Dickerson is open to the public for hiking, rock climbing, and sightseeing. The popular Blue Northern Peak Trail loop is 5.5 miles, offers scenic views, and is rated as difficult.

Running parallel to the Potomac River, the C&O Canal offers hikers a waterfront view through a series of trails and towpaths. Locals love to hike the Billy Goat Trail at the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center. The lockhouses, managed by the C&O Canal Trust, along the towpaths are available for visitors to step back in time and spend nights in these original homes.

For nearly 100 years, The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal (C&O) was a lifeline for communities along the Potomac River. Today, it endures as a pathway for discovering historical and recreational treasures!

Take a trip back in time aboard the mule-drawn Charles F. Mercer packet boat at the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center, or stay overnight in

one of six historic lockhouses through the award-winning Canal Quarters program managed by the C&O Canal Trust. Four lockhouses are in

Montgomery County. Don’t forget to visit The Monocacy Aqueduct. As the largest of the 11 aqueducts erected along the C&O Canal, it is often described by many historians as one of the finest canal features in the United States.

Experience Maryland as it looked in the early 1800s by visiting Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park in Sandy Spring. The Woodlawn Visitor Center is a stone barn full of interactive exhibits that tell the story of a bustling farm and the earliest residents of the Woodlawn community. Walk the Underground Railroad Experience Trail and imagine what it was like to be a freedom seeker.

The Montgomery County Historical Society, located in Rockville, operates two museums and a research library. The Beall-Dawson House, an elegant Federal-style townhome circa 1815, displays the history and heritage of the county. The Stonestreet Museum of 19th Century Medicine investigates the changes in medical practice from 1852–1903, the years Dr. Edward Stonestreet practiced medicine in this one-room, freestanding doctor’s office.

Just outside the Capital Beltway in Rockville, The Music Center and Mansion at Strathmore has been a beacon for performing arts since 1981. The 1,976-seat theater regularly hosts favorites like the National Philharmonic Orchestra and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. What once was an amusement park, Glen Echo Park is now home to a community of artists, educators, dancers, and performers who share their knowledge and expertise with more than 400,000 people each year. In addition to the vintage carousel and bumper cars, the park holds weekly dances in the Spanish Ballroom—swing, salsa, classical, Cajun, balboa, and even the blues! The Sandy Spring Museum shares stories from agricultural innovation, women’s suffrage, and progressive education. The permanent exhibit illustrates local history through photographs, documents, and objects that were collected from the families of the neighborhood’s earliest residents.
