Let Chaos reignIn preparation for the island’s major music festival of the year, The Greenman MCC Chaos Festival, which runs from Friday to Sunday, Emily Burden spoke to punk/metal troubadours Spit Like This, who playthe Greenman Stage next Saturday

‘IWOULD give my right ****to live there’ – yep, singerLord Zion, of UK glam punk

metal band Spit Like This, islooking forward to coming toGuernsey next weekend.The band is taking to theGreenman stage at the ChaosFestival on Saturday at 9pm.Known for their theatricalperformances, shows ofteninclude fake blood, severedmannequin heads and whips.Guernsey can expect to beentertained.‘A lot of what we do is tongue-in-cheek,’ said Lord Zion. ‘Somepeople may be shocked, butonly if they lead very shelteredlives.’ The band was formed inLondon in 2002 by Lord Zionand Vikki Spit: he had thenotion of the perfect rock ’n’ rollband, and she had the bassguitar. Following a couple ofchanges, the current line-up isLord Zion on vocals, Vikki Spiton bass, Vile Gilez on drumsand newest member Rob Riot,who joined this year, on guitar.‘Rob’s playing is tighter than ourprevious guitar player, so wesound much more like theintended sound Vikki and Iestablished in 2002,’ said LordZion.‘His addition has given us theopportunity to tune down a bitto D – this has given us aheavier and more aggressivesound, which is much more inkeeping with how we performlive.’The band released four EPs andone compilation CD beforereleasing their debut LP, WeWon’t Hurt You (But We Won’tGo Away) in 2008. Before its release, the album hitnumber seven on the hmv.compre-order chart, and oncereleased entered their newrelease chart at 29.They are soon to enter thestudio to record We Won’t HurtYou’s follow-up with Grammy-nominated producer ChrisTsangarides.And having previously workedwith rock royalty Ozzy Osbourne,Lord Zion is sure he is the rightman for the job.‘I am really excited about the

prospect of finally recording thedefinitive Spit Like This sound,’he said.‘We’ve done several recordingsand never quite nailed it. ‘I know Chris will and if he canhandle Ozzy, he can sure handleus.’As well as being voted numbereight in the Kerrang! Readerspoll of best unsigned bands priorto being signed, Spit Like Thishave filled support slots forWednesday 13, LA Guns Fozzyand Towers of London.Yet more notable slots was their2007 performance supportingThe Misfits and the festivalappearance at Hard Rock Hell,where they were the onlyunsigned band on the mainstage, opening for Twisted Sister.Their appearance at Chaosfollows an Ibiza trip, where theyperformed at the Hard Rock HellRoad Trip.‘Sharing the stage withlegendary acts can besometimes good and sometimesbad,’ said Lord Zion.‘We’ve played with a lot ofpeople I have grown up listeningto, and although that is verycool, it is often verydisappointing when they turn outto be idiots.‘Several bands have beenincredible though, including TheMisfits, who went above andbeyond to make us feelwelcome.‘We’ll be sharing a festival stage

with more legends in August,including my all-time favouriteband, Motley Crue, so it will beinteresting to see what categorythey fall into.’You’d think playing across theglobe at prestigious rockfestivals would mean that Spit

Like This are not that excitedabout coming to our little rock –but you’d be wrong.‘I have been to Guernsey 15times before,’ said Lord Zion.

‘My parents always used to dragme there during my youth. I saydragged because, to a youngperson, Guernsey is not themost exciting place on earth.‘Then something happened onceI stopped going yearly – Istarted to miss it.

‘So much so that I stole abunch of money and got a boatover just before my 21stbirthday.‘More recently, in May, Vikki andI had a one day whistlestop visitso I could show her some of thesights that were part of mychildhood – now I would give myright **** to live there – I loveit and I am really lookingforward to coming over again.’They drive a hearse, cite acouple of influences as TheRocky Horror Show and QuentinTarantino and work with song/Eptitles such as Sleaze Sells... ButWho’s Buying and The Pop Shot– let’s face it, Spit Like This aregoing to be well worth seeing atnext weekend’s Chaos.

Organisers say that thisyear’s peace tent is going tobe full of surprises, onebeing a makeshift timemachine (don’t ask – go andfind out for yourselves) andthe world’s biggest cardgame ever.

FESTIVAL DETAILS...

JUDGING by their YouTubefootage, [spunge] are agreat knockabout live act.

The band are from Tewksbury inGloucestershire and have builtup an underground following fortheir ballsy ska/punk sound.Over the 16 years togetherthey’ve had a top 40 single andplayed the first DownloadFestival. Despite being signed toWarner Brothers in 2002 andgetting a single, Jump OnDemand, to 39 in the singleschart, the band and labelparted company, they sackedtheir manager, took on the day-to-day running and created theirown label, Dent’All Records, in2004.

CL: The band was formed in1994. That’s a long timetogether. Is the enthusiasm stillthere?Alex: The main thing is that westill enjoy doing it, and alwayshave done. We are a bunch ofmates first and foremost andthat is the main reason it isn’tsomething we think of as achore. We love doing this.CL: You’ve played everywherefrom sweaty pubs to majorfestivals, which do you prefer?Alex: They both have theirplace. We have played some bigshows and wouldn’t want toswap the feeling for anything..but there is also something tobe said for a whole roomgetting sweaty along with youwhile you’re playing.CL: Life on the road – how doyou keep sane?

Alex: Beer, mainly. And a lot ofDVDs to watch.CL: You played the firstDownload Festival at CastleDonington in July 2003. Whatwas it like?Alex: Awesome. It meant a lotto me anyway as I always usedto go to the Monsters of Rockthere as a kid... so it felt likeI’d really made it to play whereI’d watched so many of myfavourite bands. Theatmosphere on the day wassomething else. Oh, andMetallica supported us – well,they played a secret set rightbefore us on the stage we wereon anyway...CL: Touring with Green Day andBowling for Soup, what was thatlike?Alex: Very cool. With Green Daywe did a bunch of big festivalsand got to sit down and get

wrecked with them too and theyare the nicest people you couldmeet – they don’t have to be,so that makes it even morespecial when you realise theyreally are grateful for what theyhave achieved. Bowling ForSoup came over and supportedus on our tour. A lot of that is ablur... which means it musthave been fun.CL: You left Warner Brothersand sacked your management afew years ago. How easy is it torun things yourselves? What areyour feelings on big recordlabels?Alex: It’s different and can be astruggle but we were lucky tohave met people during ourtime together so we haddistribution and things like thatin place – the same goes forthe management thing. There issomething to be said for having

someone looking after things foryou, but it is too easy to fallout of touch with what is goingon and this is what happenedto us. We had lost control ofour own band in some respects,and it felt good to take it backagain. Big labels have theirplace but sometimes you risklosing your real identity as aband if you do EVERYTHINGthey want you to do...CL: You put on/have put onyour own festival in Tewksbury.How does that go down? Alex: It’s a good excuse to getfriends and bands we like andknow together for a great day ofmusic. It also means we areputting something on for ourhometown and we just enjoydoing it. I think people comealong and appreciate the factthat we keep it so close tohome. We get people travellingfrom all over the place nowwhich is awesome.CL: So what does the futurehold for [spunge]?Alex: More of the same, moreshows, more songs, more fun.We are writing new tunes at themoment and looking at anotheralbum release some timesooner rather than later. Wehave said for many years – andit still holds true – we will keepon playing and having fun ifpeople keep on coming to seeus. So I can’t see usdisappearing anytime soon.
