The most popular part of new York City is the area between Columbus Circle and Battery Park. Within those borders are some of the world’s most famous places: the Empire State Building, Chinatown, Grand Central Terminal, the 9/11 Memorial, Little Italy, and Times Square. On tour with a private guide you will see, hear, and explore the city. In some cases you will get out and walk around so you can truly experience Gotham. This evening dinner is at a local restaurant, which has become a New York institution. (B,D)

fRI 31 MARCh: NEw YORk Progressive meal and tour (5 hours)

Today enjoy a food and fun tour as a progressive meal. Start with appetizers from a family-owned authentic Greek bakery in Hell’s Kitchen. Next is an Italian specialty lunch in Little Italy. The finale is the world’s best cheesecake in Brooklyn! You will see many of the iconic sights including Soho, Brooklyn Heights and Greenwich Village. Evening at leisure on your own. (B,L)

SuN 2 APRIL: NEw YORk – MIAMI Transferred to JFK airport for your flight to Miami

Depart new York on American Airlines at 9.50am / Arrive Miami 1pm

Later in the afternoon gather at the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables for a welcome reception and Tauck Director briefing about tomorrow morning’s charter flight to Havana and the start of your educational exchange trip to Cuba. Dinner is included this evening. (B,D)

MON 3 APRIL: MIAMI – hAVANA Join a charter flight from Miami to Havana. From the airport, drive to

the Museum of the Revolution, housed in what was once Cuba’s Presidential Palace, for a visit and your first People-to-People cultural exchange. Continue on to the Meliá Habana for lunch. After lunch, attend a discussion about U.S. – Cuban relations at the hotel. This evening drive along the seaside and stop at Plaza de la Revolucion with huge metalwork portraits of national hero Che Guevara before dinner at a local restaurant. (B,L,D)

TuES 4 APRIL: COLóN'S CEMETERY & hEMINgwAY’S CubA With Cuba’s origins as a Spanish colony rooted in Catholic traditions,

religion has played an important role in its society – as you’ll see on a walk with a local historian through Havana’s Colón Cemetery, one of the world's largest. The cemetery contains hundreds of elaborately sculpted memorials, mausoleums and family vaults, and is considered by many the most ornate necropolis in the world. Depart the city for Finca Vigia in San Francisco de Paula, American novelist Ernest Hemingway’s winter home from 1939 to 1960. See the author’s 9,000-volume library and his typewriter, and talk with a docent about Hemingway's life here. After lunch, return to Havana for a walk along Calle Obispo, winding up at the Hotel Ambos Mundos to continue exploring Hemingway’s strong connections to Cuba and its people (who simply called him “Ernesto”). Make your way up to Room #511, his “first home” in Cuba, which he rented from 1932 – 1939, and where he began For Whom the Bell Tolls; the memorabilia on display prompts an exchange about his time in Havana. Enjoy dinner at a choice of restaurants in your hotel this evening. (B,L,D)

wED 5 APRIL: hISTORIC hAVANA & COMMuNITY ARTS Begin today’s People-to-People exchange at Maqueta de La Habana, a

museum featuring a 1:500 scale model of Havana. Meet a local expert on the city’s architecture and historic restoration efforts, and embark on a guided walking tour through Habana Vieja – the city’s nearly 500-year-old heart, now a pedestrian-only UNESCO World Heritage Site. See Havana’s beautiful Catedral de San Cristóbal. Move onto Projecto Muraleando – a barrio community art project featuring murals and sculptures crafted from found items. After lunch arrive at Habana Compás, a thriving Havana dance and cultural performance group; talk with company members about their mission. Return late afternoon to your hotel; enjoy a rooftop dinner tonight at Parque Central. (B,L,D)

ThuRS 6 APRIL: ChE'S LEgACY AND SANTA CLARA Depart Havana this morning en route to the province of Villa Clara.

Arrive at the Che Guevara Mausoleum in Santa Clara, a memorial sculpture complex and museum honoring Ernesto “Che” Guevara de la Serna, the Argentine-born physician, Marxist revolutionary and military leader who played a key role as Fidel Castro’s second-in-command in the Cuban Revolution and the subsequent establishment of Cuba’s revolutionary government; the complex commemorates the victory of Che’s troops in the pivotal Battle of Santa Clara in 1958. View the monuments and some of his personal effects in the museum. Following lunch, continue on to your hotel on Cayo Ensenachos – a small island linked to the mainland by a long causeway. Dinner this evening is at your hotel. (B,L,D)

country today and head for the city of Camagüey. En route, stop in the pretty little town of Sancti Spiritus, whose Old Town is currently undergoing restoration. There, you'll learn all about the history and manufacture of the traditional white, four-pocketed Cuban shirt, the guayabera, at the Guayabera Museum. Lunch today will be at a private paladar in town, where you'll discuss the process and challenges of turning a private home into a restaurant with the owner. Continue your journey to Camagüey; arrive at your hotel early this evening. (B,L,D)

SuN 9 APRIL: CAMAgüEY'S ARTISANS AND ThEIR wORk Today, you’ll meet artisans and artists in the city of Camagüey, settled

early in the 16th century and affectionately dubbed "the Maze" for its labyrinthine historic center of twisting lanes and squares that confounded pirates and invaders in bygone days. First, visit the studio of leather sculptor José “Pepe” Guiterrez, for a demonstration and discussion of his work: creating unique masks and animal sculptures from goat hide. next watch as local women make handmade dolls at an arts project that really brings its community together, Projecto Carsueño. Then attend a dance performance and cultural exchange with a local dance company, followed by lunch at a nearby paladar. Return to the hotel for the afternoon. Dinner is included this evening. After lunch, visit the Casanova Pottery Studio, where the family will show you traditional and time-honored methods of creating the iconic red clay pots and discuss their history and use. Tunas; explore the grounds, talk to workers about the crops they produce, and learn about agrarian life in today’s Cuba. In Holguín, meet

members of the Gongora family at the Papyrus Papers publishing house. Their family-operated print shop and printing museum – the first of its kind in Cuba –uses historic printing presses to produce a wide range of art books. Continue on to your hotel on the Playa Esmeralda coast in Holguín for dinner this evening. (B,L,D)

wED 12 APRIL: VELASCO & gIbARA From your resort on the Playa Esmeralda coast, head over to the

village of Velasco for a cultural exchange at Casa de la Cultura de Velasco. This modern community center is named for the Velasco native who championed its creation shortly after the Cuban Revolution. Constructed between 1964 and 1991, this gem of contemporary Cuban architecture is considered one of the most beautiful buildings of Cuba's Revolutionary period. Travel to the coastal town of Gibara, that, according to legend, Christopher Columbus called "the most beautiful land that human eyes saw." Following lunch visit Gibara's natural History Museum. Return to your hotel in Holguín, where you'll bid Cuba and its people a fond adiós at a farewell reception and dinner tonight. (B,L,D)
