Dear Friends,

The new White Paper on education has unequivocally set out this Government’s intentions about the future of the school system. “By the end of 2020, all schools will be academies or in the process of becoming academies; by 2020 local authorities will no longer maintain schools”. The last vestige of local authority management of schools, established in the 1902 Balfour Act, and the Butler 1944 Education Act, will vanish. The only responsibility left to local authorities would be that of ensuring that there were sufficient school places in their area. No democratically elected local Councillors would have any say in the education of children in their areas.

The advent of academies and fee schools has brought a proliferation of school providers, trusts, and other organisations, who now run schools. The governors of schools which become academies assume the place of directors and are accountable for all aspects of school performance, employment, finance, safeguarding and governance. It has been described as a challenge with a substantial risk. I was a school governor when the 1986 Education Act came into force and a large number of governors resigned then because they did not want the responsibility for the school’s finance and performance. Even more may resign because of the many additional responsibilities which would be placed upon them.

This proposed legislation affects all schools irrespective of size and even the smallest village school will have to convert. The disintegration of local authority schools is particularly troubling for rural areas because they have many small schools, many of which are Church of England schools. It is suggested that these small schools would become part of a Multi-Academy Trust (MAT) run under the control of the Diocese. But I can tell you that there are still many problems to iron out, not least the independence of the school; the position of the Head of each school; and how the MAT will be governed.

There are no government guidelines on the actual preferred pupil numbers in an academy or a Multi Academy Trust. Totals of between 2000 and 4000 pupils are bandied about as the preferred size, but in our diocese we have MATs of fewer than 500 pupils.

The Church must also be robust in safeguarding the trustee-held Church land on which the school stands. Although the Government says that they would not take possession of trustee-owned Church school sites, I believe them to be quite capable of changing their mind. The Church could lose ownership of the land and the community could end up losing a building

which acts as a village hall. And we would find the land sold for building executive style houses.

The Church believes in the collaborative and service based concept of delivering education, rather than the proposed market based model. Education is not a commodity to be bought or sold. It must be based on what is best for the children whom the school serves.

May God bless you.

Your Priest and Friend,

Edward Ward

FROM THE EDITOR

1st May is Rogation Sunday when the clergy and congregation process out of church

during the main morning service at Edgmond to a suitable viewpoint at which to ask

for God’s blessing on the village, on the fruits of the earth and on the labours of

those who produce our food. The photo top left on our front cover is of last year’s

procession. On Thursday 5th May the Church commemorates the Ascension of

Jesus into Heaven; following an early morning service at St Peter’s, Edgmond, some

of the congregation climb the church tower to sing hymns – the middle photo on the

left shows last year’s hymn singing. Why not join them this year? Or at least listen

out for them and join in wherever you are. On Sunday, May 8th the last service to

be held in Edgmond Methodist Chapel will take place at 3.00 pm and all friends of

the chapel are invited to share in the farewell. The photo bottom left is of the

chapel interior and congregation, taken in August 2009. And lastly, on the right is

a picture of rows of jolly Easter bunnies – taken at the Children’s Workshop held at

St Peter’s on 25th March this year. It looks as though they all had fun!

The next edition of the Parish Magazine and Village News will cover the month of

June 2016 and the deadline for contributions is Sunday, 1st May. I would be very

grateful if you can deliver your contributions in good time to me at the address on

the inside front cover – or you can email them to me at [email protected].

And I’m always delighted to receive your photos (preferably by email) not just for

the front cover, but also to illustrate your articles and contributions inside.

Don’t forget that you can also read this magazine online on both the village and

church websites (addresses on the front cover).

ARCHDEACON’S VISITATION

This will be held on Tuesday May 17th at 7.00 pm for 7.30 pm. It is at this meeting

that the newly-elected Churchwardens are sworn in; they can report their

Incumbent for any misdemeanours; and the Archdeacon brings matters of

importance to their notice.

A CALL TO PRAYER - “THY KINGDOM COME”

The two Archbishops have issued a letter inviting all congregations

and parishioners to take part in a week of prayer in the week

leading up to Pentecost (Whitsunday), May 8th – 15th 2016. At the

heart of all the prayers will be the words of Jesus in the Lord’s

Prayer “Thy kingdom come”.

Each parish is left to its own devices to decide exactly how it will keep this week,

but there are various suggestions such as commitment to a week of prayer; special

prayers in worship; prayer walks; spending time before Jesus in sacramental form; a

parish quiet day. Our six parishes will be wanting to mark and keep this week in their

own particular way, so do please come and join us during this week.

RECTOR’S 25TH ANNIVERSARY

We’ve discovered, thanks to the Archdeacon, that this

year will be the 25th anniversary of the Rector’s Induction

as our Rector. Edward was inducted as Rector of Edgmond,

Kynnersley and Preston upon the Wealdmoors at St

Peter’s, Edgmond on November 6th, 1991. It is rather rare

these days to find a Parish Priest who has stayed so long

in one parish or group of parishes, so let’s organise a

celebration.

ADVANCE NOTICE - THE CLYPPING SERVICE

Please note that this year the Clypping Service – the unique service to Edgmond - will

take place on Sunday June 26th, which is the Sunday before our Patronal Day (June

29th). As you all probably know, the Clypping should take place either on the Patronal

Festival day or else on the Sunday within the octave of the Patronal; however this

year the Rector will be away on July 3rd attending a family event, so we will be

holding the Clypping on June 26th. Please enter this in your diary.

THE QUEEN’S 90TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

As you are no doubt aware, this year we shall be celebrating the Queen’s 90th

birthday. The official celebrations will be held on the weekend of June 10th – 12th

and we will be holding some form of celebration at St Peter’s Church to mark this

special occasion.

COFFEE AND CHAT

The next Thursday Coffee Morning at St Peter’s Church,

Edgmond will be on Thursday, May 19th following the 9.30 am Holy

Communion Service. You don’t have to attend the service to be

able to have a cup of coffee. Just turn up at the church at about 10.00 am or

thereabouts, and join us for coffee (or tea) and a chat. We shall look forward to

seeing you.

– We need you!

Coming soon! An exciting new project for schools will be taking place at Lichfield Cathedral during May and June.

Can you help us?

Running from 10 am to 3 pm, each day will host about 130 pupils. The vision of Inspire is to provide a space that is ‘Inspirational, Educational and Spiritual’ for every child, young person and member of school staff that attends. Some of the exciting activities include graffiti art, exploring Christianity in our different link dioceses as well as opportunities to explore every nook and cranny on the cathedral (including going up the tower).

23-27 May – Year 4 pupils 6-10 June – Year 6 pupils 16-17 June – Year 9 pupils

We are looking for volunteers who are able to help out in a variety of ways to ensure that each day runs smoothly and is a meaningful and engaging day for all pupils and staff. Volunteers can give as much or as little time as they feel comfortable doing, from 1 day to the full 12 days. For further information or to register your interest please contact either Sue Blackmore on 07891 611760, [email protected] or Libby Leech on 07891 290564, [email protected].

HEALING SERVICE

Just to remind you all that the next monthly Healing Service at St Peter’s, Edgmond

will be held on 8th May at 6.30 pm.

ASCENSION DAY - MAY 5TH

On Ascension Day we will be holding our traditional services to mark this day. There

will be two celebrations of Holy Communion at St Peter’s, Edgmond: 7.00 am (Common

Worship), and 9.30 am (Book of Common Prayer). The 7.00 am Communion service will

be followed by the traditional hymn singing from the top of the church tower, to

symbolise Jesus’ return to heaven.

EASTER THANKS

A great big ‘THANK YOU’ must be given to all those who helped in so many different

ways over Easter. We must thank all the members of the Flower Guild for their hard

work in producing such beautiful flower arrangements; to Jane, Julia, and all their

helpers in organising and running the Good Friday Workshop for children, when we

had over 30 children doing various crafts associated with Good Friday and Easter; to

Edric and all the Ringers for ringing at all the extra services; to Colin and the Choir

for their faithfulness and loyalty in turning up and singing at all the extra services

including the Good Friday Concert, as well as performing an anthem at the Easter

Eucharist; we must thank all the servers, and those behind the scenes who get

everything ready for our services (such as changing the altar frontals), as well as

thanking Maureen for producing the pewsheets in advance for the services.

All this adds to the atmosphere of our church and worship. Thank you all very much.

SACRISTRY BELL

“Not another bell!” I hear you cry. But yes; St Peter’s has been presented with a

Sacristry Bell. This bell is rung in the church before the service begins to alert the

congregation that the service is about to begin and the choir and clergy are about to

enter. In the “good old days” such a bell would be rung twice, firstly about five

minutes before the service began to inform the congregation that they should now

cease talking and begin their private prayers of preparation, and the second time

was to inform them to stand as the clergy were about to enter and begin the service.

I feel that ringing the bell is a more dignified way of beginning the service than

either standing at the back of the church and shouting “Please stand”, or having the

congregation rather hesitantly standing to their feet as the choir processes past.

We are very grateful to the donor of this bell.

The next meeting will be on Thursday 12th May at 2.15 pm in St Peter’s Church,

Edgmond. Our speaker will be the Revd Hywell Snook, Parish Priest at Christ Church,

Little Drayton. Everyone is welcome.

For further information and/or help with transport please contact Margaret

Matthews on 825976.

12

WENDY BENTLEY

“That was so Wendy” was a frequent comment made after the funeral of Wendy Bentley held in St Peter’s Church which was packed with family, friends, and neighbours. It was not too surprising as Wendy had organised the funeral service herself. For after her family had waded through and discarded piles of paper, they finally found a definitive form of service which Wendy had written down, and this was the service used.

Wendy was born in Stoke-on-Trent in 1932, the only child of Ethel and Cecil Henshall. At an early age she discovered a love and ability for drama and singing. She was a pupil of John Harvey and sang with other pupils such as Kathleen Ferrier and Percy Young and under the batons of conductors such as Sir John Barbirolli and Sir Malcolm Sargent; and acted alongside actors such as Sheila Hancock.

Wendy married Roy (an RAF Officer) in 1951 and they had two sons, Roger and Jonathan. Roy’s position in the RAF meant that the family moved all over the country and abroad, including three years in Cyprus, where Wendy founded the Leucas RAF Choir which is still going today. When the family returned to England in 1964 John Harvey persuaded Wendy to join him in founding the North Staffs School of Music and Drama. When John died, Wendy became the Principal of the School which moved to Mossdene Studios when the North Staffs School had to be demolished to make way for the A500. Here she trained actors such as Anthea Turner and Bonnie Langford, and the Studios became the examining centre for North Staffordshire. In addition Wendy worked first as personal assistant to Major McGowan at Talke Hall, and later as a Housemistress at Ellerslie Girls School in Malvern.

Unfortunately Wendy and Roy’s marriage broke down and she then met and married Raymond, and Darren was born to them. The family (with Wendy’s parents) moved into Edgmond, but unfortunately soon afterwards her father died. Wendy and her mother became regular members of St Peter’s congregation. Wendy became a sidesperson; she read the lessons; led the prayers even when she had to sit in her wheelchair to do so. The prayers revealed her great desire for love and peace to be ruling this world. Her acting ability meant that she took an active part in the mediaeval Mystery Plays put on in the church, as well as writing and performing in sketches and plays for the Mothers Union. Wendy also possessed great organisational skill which she used at the WI, MU, and in the church and also at the Severn Hospice.

Wendy and Raymond separated, and Wendy, Darren and her mother moved to Muxton, where she met a retired farmer called Walter, whose garden adjoined hers. They were married in St Peter’s in 1995 and these were the happiest years of their lives. Unfortunately Walter passed away in 2007 and soon afterwards Wendy was diagnosed with cancer. But she wouldn’t let that defeat her, finally moving to a flat in the Preston Trust Homes.

Wendy’s personality, her non-judgmental advice and her unconditional love have influenced and affected people far and wide, and this was seen by the very large congregation at her funeral. We thank God for Wendy’s life and example, and offer our deepest sympathy to all her family especially, Roger, Jonathan and Darren, her daughters in law, her 7 grandchildren and her first great grandchild, at this sad moment in their lives.

13

JOHN BEESTON

The chapel at Telford Crematorium was full when friends, neighbours and members of the Vintage Tractors Society came together with John’s family to remember John Beeston.

John was one of those rare people who are born, live and die in the same village. He was born in Robin Lane, Edgmond. He attended St Peter’s School before going to the Walker Technical College at Wellington. After his National Service he started working at Bromley’s in Newport. This is where his passion and interest in tractors was born, because he had to build them from the crates the parts came in. He also had a passion for motor bikes - but then he met his wife Betty and a sidecar became a necessity!

He moved to become a vehicle examiner at the R.E.M.E. workshops at the Depot at Donnington, where he became known as Jack, which the family found very confusing when they discovered that no-one appeared to know John Beeston, but everyone knew Jack! John continued to work at the Depot until ill health forced early retirement.

John and Betty married in 1957 at Chetwynd Church and moved into Chetwynd Road. Gillian was born in 1961 and Alan in 1964. John and Betty acquired a caravan and became members of the Shropshire Caravan Club, enjoying many caravan holidays all over the country. Sadly their daughter Gillian died suddenly in 1981.

John was also an avid member of all sorts of clubs and societies, from indoor bowling at St Georges and outdoor bowling with Edgmond Bowling Club, from the Ancient Order of Foresters to vintage tractors. He was a staunch member of the Tern Valley and Mid-Shropshire Vintage Machinery Societies, where he started with stationary engines and then moved onto an Allis Chambers, and then his beloved Fordson Major E27N. John would frequently be seen driving this around the village and locality, always in his blue boiler suit and wearing a blue cap, and always with a big smile of pleasure on his face.

John was a regular member of the early morning Communion congregation at St Peter’s, and was also involved in the production and distribution of the parish magazine.

When Betty was diagnosed with breast cancer he spent a lot of time at Severn Hospice at Shrewsbury. After her death he still continued his association with the Hospice as a volunteer driver. When the new Hospice opened at Apley he became involved with that, until he had to call it a day because his knees needed replacing.

After his own diagnosis of throat cancer he still carried on as if nothing was wrong. He still had that beaming smile. And at his funeral the Rector reminded everyone of the motto John had given his son Alan, which was “Life is too short, so live it, and be the best person you can be”.

We remember John and thank God for his example to us, and the one thing we will always remember is that smile of his. We offer to Alan and to all John’s family and his many friends, our deepest condolences at this time.

Tuesday 17 May 2016 - Annual General Meeting - members only.

Tuesday 21 June 2016 - David Bartley returns with "An afternoon of Black Country poetry and banter".

The venue for all meetings is the Royal British Legion Club, Audley Road, Newport. The meetings commence at 2 pm. Admission £1. With the exception of the AGM, visitors are always welcome.

PARISH WARDEN’S REPORT

There were two reported crimes in Edgmond during March. The first was of criminal damage to a vehicle. It occurred overnight on 12th March, when a car window was broken in Silverdale.

The second was a daytime burglary, on 23rd March, fairly central within the village, with jewellery stolen. Unfortunately, however, the householder concerned has requested that no further details should be released. This means that the road, street, or lane cannot be revealed, contrary to normal practice.

On Tuesday, 29th March, two PCSO’s, together with some Police Cadets, issued about 25 marking kits for bicycles. Although based in the recreation field car park, they also visited the school playing field.

The mobile police station will be in the village again on the 6th May at 1430, and the 25th May at 1330. It will be in the recreation field car park on each of these dates, with members of the Newport Safer Neighbourhood team in attendance. They will be more than willing to discuss any issues you might like to raise, so please visit them.

FIRE SAFETY IN THE HOME

Charlie Cartwright, Fire Officer from Shrewsbury, is visiting the first Afternoon

Tea at Edgmond Village Hall on 12th May. All are welcome to join Charlie who will give

a talk on fire safety in the home highlighting fire hazards around the home if left

unattended. Should be an interesting talk! (See poster overleaf.)

News & Reports from Edgmond Parish Council www.edgmondparishcouncil.co.uk

It’s always difficult keeping our rights of way (footpaths,

bridleways and restricted byways) fully accessible,

especially during the summer months. Vegetation grows

faster than we can keep it cleared and the Telford &

Wrekin Council budget for such works is very limited. This

is why we have decided to team up with both

Tibberton/Cherrington plus Waters Upton Parish Councils

to form a Parish Paths Partnership. We will be liaising

closely with our Rights of Way Officer and his contractor

to take over some control of our priorities and budget for

rights of way. We expect this to be a more efficient way of keeping our paths as

clear as possible.

In March, a work party from the Telford & East Shropshire Ramblers cleared the

footpath that runs from Rock Lane to Birchmoor Lane. We’d like to thank the

Ramblers for this valuable help with rights of way maintenance.

We continue to work towards completing the switch to our new website. We have

received a government grant to help towards the cost of this additional work to

comply with new transparency regulations.

We have already asked for anyone interested in helping with minor works around the

village to come forward. There have already been some expressions of interest and,

with the help of a small grant from Veolia, we will be organising some maintenance

projects and new projects around the village.

You will be pleased to know that the Parish Council has contributed fully during the

consultation process for the emerging Local Plan. We think that comments made by

us, and others, have particularly helped to strengthen the protection for the

Conservation Area as well as a providing for a buffer zone separating Edgmond from

the University as well as from Newport.

Our Annual General Meeting will be held on 9th May. This will be followed by a Full

Council Meeting. Katrina Baker MBE, Parish Clerk

PASSOVER MEAL AT ST LAWRENCE’S SCHOOL, PRESTON

On Tuesday March 15th St Lawrence’s School held a

Passover Meal outside on the playground. Children

from Year 6 sat at a long table while the rest of the

pupils sat in groups on the ground. Parents sat on

chairs towards the rear of the groups.

The service began with everyone singing “Be still,

for the presence of the Lord, the Holy One is here” to remind everyone that this

was an act of worship and God was with them.

Page 20: WITH ST CHAD’S, KYNNERSLEY MOORSstpeterschurchedgmond.org/doc/169_May_Magazine_for_Website.pdf · which acts as a village hall. And we would find the land sold for building executive

20

Mrs Pagett spoke to the children reminding them of all the work they had done

previously about the Israelites being slaves in Egypt and how God sent 10 plagues on

the Egyptians until Pharaoh let them go. And then how the Israelites had to make

bread in a hurry in order to have something to eat, and how the Passover Meal

commemorated their escape from Egypt.

Year Six then read out parts of the New Testament telling the story of how Jesus

celebrated the Passover with his

disciples, and they re-enacted the

Last Supper. The Rector explained

how all this was included in the Holy

Communion Service. Everyone then

both broke and shared the bread

which the children had made earlier,

and also a cup of juice.

This was a very moving and inspirational act of worship, and we hope that it will lead

on to a course on the meaning of Holy Communion and eventually celebrating a School

Communion Service.
