NERVES AND BLOOD SUPPLY

WHY…….With your partner provide a short description explaining the functions of our nerves.

EXTENSION TASK Part A– Identify the 2 different types of

nerves.Part B- Explain the differences between the 2 types.

Nerves carry electrical impulses to the brain which creates either Muscles Movement Secretion Action Sensation Stimulation

Motor nerves

Sensory nerves

Watching the link below identify and write down the

elements of the video in which there is

MOTOR nerve involvement and

SENSORY nerve involvement

You must write down as many elements of each as

possible

The body has 12 pairs of cranial nerves branching off from

the brain

In your group research which of the cranial nerves are relevant to

dental nurses. You must identify each of

these by- name

- roman numeral- supplied anatomical areas

Extension taskIf you complete this identify the function of the nerve

TRIGEMINAL NERVE

This nerve splits into 3 divisions

Name derives from this anatomical division 3 = “Tri”

What are these 3 divisions?

The Opthalmic nerve

Is a sensory nerve that supplies the eyeball, eyelid, skin of nose and forehead

The Maxillary Nerve –apple group

In your groups create a poster. You must clearly identify and label

-The anatomical path-Anatomical features (foramens)

-The teeth and surfaces supplied Extension task-On the study models clearly identify and

label each nerve providing a colour coded key

The Mandibular Nerve –cherry group

SCENARIOSWithin your groups you have

been provided with a scenario. You must allocated the job

roles of the dentist, the patient and dental nurse. Re-

enact your scenario to the group. You have 15 minutes to

prepare and rehearse.

AIMS To develop awareness of the nervous system of the

head and neck relevant to dental nurses. To increase understanding of local anaesthetic used

within the dental care setting.

OBJECTIVES O1-Outline the main characteristics of dental nerves. O2-Define the 4 cranial nerves relative to dental

nurses.  O3-Identify and illustrate the maxillary and

mandibular nerves. O4-Recognise the syringe required to create

anaesthesia. O5-Summarise objectives 1,2,3,4 and present is a

simulation of dental scenarios.
