Nicknamed Edinburgh’s “naughty grandchild”, the Prague Fringe Festival, is back with its usual eyebrow-raising programme

“It’s fun, friendly and intimate,” says co-founder and organiser Steve Gove. “Prague is a magical destination. Its secret basement venues give the Fringe a unique character.”

Expect an eclectic mix of cabaret, dance and stand-up comedy along with offbeat shows that defy categorisation, such as Romeo & Chulio. This alternative version of

Shakespeare’s classic is performed by two disco-dancing guys in green and orange bear suits with silly moustaches.

At times the venue is wackier than the show. “Last year I came towing my very old green-and-blue caravan that I had refurbished into a miniature storytelling theatre,” recalls artist Nancy Wiltink. “I feared it would fall apart so the exhilaration driving into the Old Town was immense.” Nancy will return with a new offering, What If?, but plans to travel light and leave her mobile home behind. And, proving

you don’t need a wacky theme to be funny, An Average Day for Johnny Moon (pictured) at the Divadlo Na Prádle is an improvised take on the dreams, ambitions and regrets of a man during the course of a day.

Having kicked off the festival to a full house in 2012, Andy Silverwood anticipates frank feedback when he showcases his latest comedy, How to Escape from Disney Land: “The Prague Fringe is a great testing ground for new material. Czechs are known for their bluntness, which is why I love them.” praguefringe.com

Andy Murray fans; stop reading now. Earlier this year, Novak Djokovic won the Australian Open in four sets against the Brit, exciting fans of the Serb that 2013 could be his year. And although no man’s conquered the four grand slams in the same year, Djokovic’s fine form means he could pip the champs to the post. All eyes will be on tennis’ self-proclaimed joker from 26 May to 9 June for the French Open in Paris, and Wimbledon in London from 24 June to 7 July. atpworldtour.com

Renowned for impressive acoustics and 30,000-strong seating capacity, Verona’s Arena is one of the most prided symbols of Ancient Roman architecture. Inaugurated as an opera house with a performance of Verdi’s Aida in 1913, one hundred years on, the Verona Arena is celebrating its own anniversary in the 2013 Centennial Festival; a 58-performance event showcasing six different operas. Being that this is fair Verona, it just wouldn’t be right if Romeo and Juliet wasn’t one of them. 14 June – 7 September, arena.it

Nearly 40 years after they hit the big-time, Stockholm opens an Abba museum

Sweden is finally celebrating its most famous export, as the Abba Museum opens in Djurgarden, Stockholm, on 7 May. One of the biggest bands of the 1970s, Abba followed their Eurovision smash Waterloo with classics such as Dancing Queen, Mamma Mia, Knowing

Me, Knowing You and Thank You for the Music.

Curator Ingmarie Halling drew on her memories of working with the band. “We’ve made it feel like you’re walking in the band’s footsteps,” she explains. “You come into the office, into the studio, the stage, and the dressing room. It’s like a film documentary, made into an exhibition.” abbathemuseum.com

Ever left something behind on your travels because you just couldn’t be bothered lugging it all the way back home? We’ll bet it was never as big as a 20ft sea container, of which many are abandoned having transported goods to the port of Antwerp. Well,

not anymore. Inspired by trendy retail “pop up”, Sleeping Around is a hotel pop-up that recycles these wayward carriers by converting them into luxurious hotel rooms. Now don’t expect a gutted out, makeshift affair. Instead, think mod-cons: rain showers, high-quality linen, iPod

docking stations, air conditioning and box-spring beds. There’s even a sauna container for your holiday pleasure. Locations change constantly (at time of press it could be found in Antwerp, just a 40-minute drive from Brussels) so keep up-to-date at sleepingaround.eu

Festival season is hotting up and one of the best line-ups this year goes to Primavera Sound in Barcelona. This year’s bigwigs Band of Horses, Jessie Ware and The Vaccines as well as old-school stalwarts Dinosaur Jr., Fiona Apple and Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds have already sold-out Primavera’s full festival allocation, though day tickets for 22-26 May (€80 each) are still up for grabs. But if you’re not quick enough on the mark to nab those, there’s always the free concerts on 22 May. primaverasound.es

New app Tech Cool Tour is set to revolutionise how tourists view ancient sites

An enterprising group of Serbs has designed an app that uses augmented reality to bring to life ancient Roman and Byzantine sites.

Available in English for free, on Android and iOS devices, the TechCoolTour app is being developed in Belgrade by creative agency LiveViewStudio,

which has collaborated with archaeologists, museums and NGOs, and funded by the EU.

LiveViewStudio project manager Jana Rodic says: “Information at tourist sites is sometimes hard to understand, so with this app you can just point your mobile phone or tablet at the space around you and see all the historical layers as a part of your environment, like a disappeared Roman villa in 3D.”

At present there are 12 sites across Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia, such as the Felix Romuliana complex in eastern Serbia, Pula amphitheatre in Croatia, and Fondo Cossar in Aquileia, north-eastern Italy.

“Serbia is not somewhere you would think has an important Roman heritage,” says Jana, “but actually 17 Roman emperors were born here!”

You can download the app from 1 May, at techcooltour.com

How do les Parisiennes tone themselves in readiness for bikini season? With wine, seduction and dessert...

● Ladies – do you really want to get hot and bothered in your exercise routine? Why not think French – it’s more fun to get men hot and bothered. That’s the principle behind performance-oriented Love Dance classes, created by dance instructor Naïla Liscia. “Wear your highest heels because that’s what really trims the calves,” she advises. The work-out ends with a lap-dance that clients are encouraged to share with an appreciative home audience. nl-production.com

● Traditional spin classes might burn off calories, but they can flatten a chic chignon before you shift up to second gear. Aquasvelt is the cool, coiffure-conscious alternative: a stationary bike, immersed in fragrant water, in a

pristine private room. Hydro-massage jets provide gentle, micro-peeling treatments that smooth the thighs while you’re pedalling off the love handles. aquasvelt.waterbike.fr

● At the elegant, wine-oriented Caudalie spa in Les Etangs de Corot hotel, just 15 minutes west of Paris, six-day weight-loss programmes start with a soothing soak in brandy-spiked bath-water. What truly makes cellulite disappear? Ah… that will be the Cabernet scrub laced with a top-secret ‘Skinny Concentrate’, pressed from the Grand Cru grapes at the Château Smith Haut Lafitte vineyards outside Bordeaux. etangs-corot.com

● Fitness instructor Régine Petit, who introduced California’s graceful NIA (Neuro-Muscular Integrated Action) exercise technique to Paris in 2007, doubles as a therapist. NIA’s low-impact

pirouettes – part Isadora Duncan, part T’ai Chi – promote “a sense of joy and a positive body image”. An opportunity to tone the body and the mind in 60 minutes? NIA’s 2-in-1 approach allows gives busy Parisiennes more leisure for other body-enhancing pursuits likelong lunches and shopping. nianow.fr

● Don’t skip dessert. Be dessert! That’s the proposal of the spa in brand-new, five-star hotel Auberge du Jeu de Paume, in the Paris suburb of Chantilly. Chantilly? That’s whipped cream, surely? Indeed, and the spa’s technicians have created an all-natural, whipped cream body wrap that ensures the smoothest skin on the planet. The treatment ends with another reward – a big dish of strawberries, served with Chantilly. Not quite so good for your thighs!aubergedujeudepaumechantilly.fr

Two hundred years after the publication of the world’s most popular fairytales, Germany celebrates the work of its two fabled storytellers

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were storytellers, fairytale weavers and dream-makers. Last December marked the 200th anniversary of The Children’s and Household’s Tales, their collection of 86 tales. Better known as Grimm’s Fairytales, the stories continue to be children’s favourites. Now the 600km-long Germany Fairytale Route marks a year of festivities, based on these magical tales and the land that inspired them.

Their birthplace Hanau, near Frankfurt, is worth a visit between May and June, for

the annual Brothers Grimm Fairytale Festival at Philippsruhe Palace. Or you could journey through the Snow White village of Bad Wildungen from May onwards for 5 Auf Einen Streich (‘Five in One Blow’). Not as gruesome as it sounds, this is a five-week long festival devoted to legends, myths and fairytales across five neighbouring towns on the German Fairytale Route. Or hike the Schwalm River, the setting for Little Red Riding Hood. Though the forest is deep and the trees towering, the big bad wolf is nowhere to be seen and the lovely town of Schwalm is just round the corner.

Don’t pass up a trip to Kassel, where the brothers worked as librarians while sourcing and rewriting their

stories. As part of the Brothers Grimm Festival (18 July – 18 August) musical versions of the fables will be performed on a floating stage in Schönefeld Park. Expedition Grimm (27 April – 8 September) indulges in an extensive display of memorabilia relating to their contributions not just to children’s literature, but to the political and linguistic landscape of the nation, in an interactive display spanning 200 enchanting years. And spare some time to visit the Brothers Grimm Museum, which houses the original annotated copies of our childhoods.Grimm 2013 hosts a year of events (grimm2013.de) on the Germany Fairytale Route. germanfairytaleroute.com

What words would you use to best describe your personality…A. Not tellingB. Sweet, well-behaved but in need of a makeoverC. One of the lads

You spent most of your childhood playing with your…A. Rats B. NightingalesC. Forest animals

The best things about castles are…A. Ridding them of rodent infestation – for a fee, of courseB. The air of romance and magic that surround themC. Keeping away from them, frankly. I prefer to hide awayin the dense, nearby forests

Are you still searching the streets for your very own Prince Charming or Sleeping Beauty?

Whether you’ve already found the love of your life, or you’re still waiting for them to come along, the next chapter in your fairytale is but a trip away. Take our quiz and watch the magic unfold…

MOSTLY AYou are: The Pied PiperHead to: HamelinYour boots are made for walking, and you’ll find them following the sound of the Pied Piper to his village, Hamelin. It’s one of the brothers’ ‘grimmer’ tales, in which a piper besotted the city’s rats, and later its children, with the lilt of his enchanting pipe. Likewise, this charming town draws millions of fairytale lovers. Hamelin features peculiar 16th-century Weser-Renaissance architecture and the shops haven’t missed a trick when it comes to referencing to the fable: you can pick up rat shaped cookies and clockwork figures at the Hochzeitshaus.

SCHLOSS DRACHENBURG CASTLE, NEAR BONN

What traits do you look for in your other half?A. A tolerance for verminB. One day, he has to comeC. A kiss, and sooner rather than later

Who was your first crush?A. The mousy typeB. A stranger who caught my eye. The white steed helpedC. I tend to attract Dopey types

What’s your fashion style?A. Colourful, casual. Green spells dangerB. Vintage. I love to trawl revival stores for something unique – like a glass slipperC. Hard to say. I prefer to stay clear of looking in the mirror – they tend to be backstabbing

What’s your creative outlet?A. Playing hypnotic tunes

What’s Your Fair ytale Ending?

B. DaydreamingC. Sewing and knitting

Your typical weekend involves…A. Counting my money and learning new songs on my pipeB. Scrubbing, cleaning, polishing, cooking, dusting...C. Hanging out with small people and sorting the good apples from the bad

MOSTLY BYou are: CinderellaHead to: Polle Castle, PolleYou old romantic! Daydreamers and homebodies alike will want flock to Cinderella’s magnificent castle – well, at least, its ruins. Though not as intact as some of the other fairytale castles in Germany (both Sleeping Beauty’s Castle in Sababurg and Rapunzel’s Tower in Trendelburg are working hotels), this castle walls perch high on a hill. Behind them, open-air renditions of Cinderella are every third Sunday from May to September at 2.15pm, and the Castle Festival’s range of theatrics are from June to August.

MOSTLY CYou are: Snow WhiteHead to: SiebengebirgeVain? You? Certainly not! You’re much more likely to appreciate the natural beauty of your surroundings rather than your own good looks. The national park of Siebengebirge with its arresting views and deep, verdant valleys is, quite simply, spectacular, and an easy place to hide from jealous stepmothers. Consisting of 40 hills, its seven major peaks (from which it gets its name) inspired Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Get your castle fix with the Schloss Drachenburg Castle, too.

culptor Nazar Bilyk graduated from the National Academy of Arts and Architecture in Kyiv.

Now a lecturer at the National Academy of Fine Art and Architecture, several of his one-man exhibitions have been held in Kyiv and abroad. Rain, one of his most beautiful sculptures, can be seen in Peyzazhnaya Alleya (‘Landscape alley’).

● I was born in Lviv, not in Kyiv, but I’ve been here for 32 years now and consider myself a fully fledged Kyivan. My grandfather, also a sculptor, received a large order for a monument in Kyiv and a new position at the Kyiv Academy of Arts, and so our family moved here.

● I have a favourite road in Kyiv, – the Parkovaya Doroga (‘Park Road’). It dissects a wooded park on the banks of the Dnieper river. I like it any time of the year, but it is at its most beautiful in winter, when heavy, snow-covered tree branches form a natural ‘tunnel’ for you to pass through. Every time I drive through it, I think how beautiful it is, and enjoy a few minutes of peace within this city’s chaotic rhythms.

● For a special dinner, I have a friend who swears by Prague Restaurant (praha-restaurant.com), in Holosiivskyi Park. It was considered a high-class location as far back as Soviet times. The food is second to none and the service superb. Personally, I prefer something a little more simple. Recently I enjoyed dinner with friends at Restaurant Tarantino (tarantino.kiev.ua/en) at Sagaidachnogo Str 35 in the Old Podol. It offers fresh, flavoursome grilled meat, and is a charming venue.

● Kyiv is very beautiful, thanks to its hillside location. Driving across the Darnitskiy Bridge, there are spectacular views to your left. Witness the breadth and grandeur of the city; the handsome Dnieper, the gold domes of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra (which

I strongly advise everyone to visit) and the Cathedral of St Sophia.

● Mistetskyi Arsenal, the National Cultural-Art and Museum Complex, is one of the most exciting art projects in the Ukraine and a contender for world’s top art museum. The recent Fine Art Ukraine exhibition was fantastic. This May, Shevchenko: Status Quo in the 21st Century commemorates the 200th anniversary of the Ukrainian writer and poet. artarsenal.in.ua

pring, and the film crews arrive at Budapest’s Chain Bridge. Hollywood action movies,

fashion shoots, TV ads for internet dating sites: they’re all filmed here, on the first permanent link between Buda and Pest. But first, these crews have to deal with János Fazekas, a third-generation bridge master whose daily task is to oversee the city’s most iconic attraction.

“When I was a boy, my dad used to bring me here and have me count the lions. I had to make sure there were still four. It was my father’s last wish that I should follow him as master of the Chain Bridge,” says János. Following time spent as a rock guitarist and successful cartoon animator, he settled down to complete the link in the family chain, and now occupies a modest office overlooking this masterpiece of engineering.

A Sputnik-era control panel monitors the ventilation of various chambers while a diary records maintenance. On his desk are tokens from the tollbooth days, when even aristocrats found they had to pay up. A photographic history adorns the walls.

BRIDGE FACTS

P E O P L E

The Chain Bridge opened 20 November, 1849. It was commissioned by Count Istaván Széchenyi, known as the ‘Greatest Hungarian’, planned by Englishman William Tierney Clark and carried through by Scotsman Adam Clark. The roundabout between bridge and Tunnel is named after Adam Clark, who later settled in the city.

János owns an original list of rules from when the bridge opened – to toll-payers only: “Pedestrians: one crown. Luggage: two crowns. Wheelbarrows: three crowns.”

Blown up by retreating Nazis in 1945, the Chain Bridge was quickly rebuilt and reopened on 20 November, 1949, exactly 100 years after its inauguration.

By the 1990s, Fazekas the younger was put in charge. When Western production companies film here, as well as during official visits, János scales the chains, and manoeuvres himself into the empty chamber above to check for any signs of disturbance. “Getting down is harder,” he laughs.

Just below street level is a nondescript door through which only János can enter. He’ll cross the damp, dripping basement brimming with cables, switches and first-aid posters – where his band once rehearsed – to head down a steep staircase. And there is a privileged sight: a chain the size of a living room, the first in a link that rises as elegantly as a countess’s necklace to a small prick of light, at which point the Chain Bridge emerges into public view.

are ready for an international career but need support, promotion and professional help,” says Michal from Poland Music Exports. PMX aims to promote Polish music abroad with the help of the state’s Adama Mickiewicza Institute. Bands have been getting funding to go play across the world. They’ve done Vienna, they’ve done New York – next stop, Brighton.

“Britain is a huge and difficult market,” muses Maciek. “It’s really tough to build a name for yourself unless you have an amazing team working for you. Your music needs to be contagious and the right people need to hear it and like it.”

One of the main attractions in Brighton is Monika Brodka, a former reality TV star known for her cool electro-pop. “There’s a lot of great music in Poland right now,” says 26 year-old Monika, who performs under her surname. “The Polish alternative scene is very interesting and we are increasingly appreciated outside of Poland, too.” The singer – who won Poland’s Pop Idol in 2004 – says of The Great Escape: “It’s one of the most important showcase festivals in Europe so naturally I’m excited about it. Playing concerts in the UK is especially challenging – but I love challenges!”

Look out for Krakow’s DJ Daniel Drumz and synth pop trio Kamp!, who are also on the bill. “Its all waiting to be discovered,” confirms Maciek. The Great Escape, 16-18 May, escapegreat.com

ome, unlike Naples, can hardly claim to be a national pizza capital. Those in search of

a great Roman pizza may find themselves disappointed by pizzerias touted as “the best”, a superlative that could easily be replaced by the “most crowded” or “most overrated”. In the past few years, however, various pizza styles have captured the Italian capital and Rome now claims some of the best pizza restaurants on the Continent. Here’s my pick of the five must-visit pizzerias in the Eternal City.

At Pizzarium, celebrity baker Gabriele Bonci has elevated pizza al taglio (pizza by the slice) toan art form. His thick and spongy base made from long, leavened spelt flour dough is topped with fun and funky combinations such as foie gras, walnuts and honey. But his best pizzas are the simple ones, such as pizza rossa (literally, red pizza), slathered in slick oil-rich tomato sauce, and pizza bianca, dressed in nothing but a liberal brushing of olive oil and a sprinkling of salt. 43 Via della Meloria, +39 06 3974 5416

Pinsere serves oblong pizzas known as pinse, spongy bases with creative toppings of fig and prosciutto (in season only), a sweet and savory ode to hot Roman nights. The dough is elastic and light. 98 Via Flavia, +39 06 4202 0924. La Pratolina, near the Vatican, also serves pinsa-style pizzas. 248 Via degli Scipioni, +39 06 3600 4409

Sforno and Tonda, Neapolitan-style pizzerias owned by Stefano Callegari and Antonio Pratticò, serve thick crust bases with classic toppings like tomato and mozzarella, but also surprising

Da Remo, one of the last quality Roman-style pizza holdouts, is a rough and ready venue on the main square in Testaccio. The service is jovial and the pizzas are dependably thin and crisp. The base is best enjoyed with as few toppings as possible – try the classic margherita. 44 Piazza Santa Maria Liberatrice

iving up the job of executive chef on The World, a luxury yacht with some of the world’s wealthiest

patrons, to focus on a wholly new concept in Romania is no standard career move. But that’s what Dutch chef Paul Oppenkamp did when he and his Romanian wife Mihaela opened The Artist in Bucharest last year.

“I could have stayed there and enjoyed a long career,” says Oppenkamp. ”But after I met my wife, we frequently visited Romania on our time off over the next six years. Increasingly we noticed that the food culture in the city was changing, expanding, and taking off in lots of exciting new directions, especially in terms of foreign cuisine and fine dining. Bucharest was already a very cosmopolitan city, and we saw an opportunity to open a restaurant with a truly modern and very different concept. Last year, we decided to do just that. It was a case of now or never.”

b e A r t ?Paul Oppenkamp, chef at Bucharest’s

The Artist restaurant, believes so

That concept is food as art. It is a way of taking food a step further, says Oppenkamp. “I see food as a painting or a sculpture. It takes time, dedication, imagination and patience. Creating dishes is a process of trial and error. You need to study cooking techniques and then go even further

and look at the science behind cooking. “For me, a perfect dish is a combination

of its visual appearance, its smell and its taste. If it’s all done well and you use enough imagination, then there is no reason why a dish can’t be as beautiful as a painting.”

For many local foodies, it’s his ability to create works of art from the most traditional, and sometimes simple, Romanian dishes that has been the most surprising aspect. Sarmale – cabbage leaves stuffed (usually) with

rice and pork – are transformed by replacing pork with lobster, while for dessert, traditional Romanian doughnuts, papanasi, are given a twist of sour ice cream and oranges.

“We also like to interact with our diners,” he explains. “Whether it’s having a guest

“The best place to eat traditional Romanian food is in the home. I adore ciorba de perisoare (sour soup with meatballs), ardei umpluti (stuffed peppers), mici (pork and mutton meatballs) and salata de boeuf (a combination of finely chopped beef or chicken and root vegetables, folded in mayonnaise). The best Romanian cook in the country, by the way, is my mother-in-law. There is no restaurant better than her kitchen table.”

ondon is all about excitement. Though it’s not the cheapest city, its Victorian architecture, squares

and parks offer up a free feast for the eyes, and recent renovations to Leicester Square, Exhibition Road and the South Bank have all added new sparkle. There are plenty of ways to enjoy the capital without breaking the bank. Just follow this fab, free London guide.

BOROUGH MARKETLocated on the South Bank near Southwark Cathedral, this buzzy market (pictured right) dates to the 13th century.

Burgers, obscure fruit and veg, mouthwatering baked treats and unpronouncable dishes? They’re all here – and more – at this foodie Aladdin’s cave. Taste the free samples, breathe in the aromas and marvel at the colourful produce. Thursday-Saturday, boroughmarket.org.uk

FREE THEATREIn the summer, The Scoop at More London (between London Bridge and Tower Bridge) hosts gigs, musical

performances, theatre and film screenings at its 800-seater sunken amphitheatre. It’s open to the elements, so maybe bring along a brolly and a sweater. morelondon.com

COLUMBIA ROAD FLOWER MARKETOkay, you probably won’t be walking away with armfuls of free posies,

but this classic East End market is a must. Every Sunday, the street is transformed into vibrant oasis with everything from 10ft banana trees, carnations and exotic flora on display. From 8am-3pm. columbiaroad.info

TIME OUT APPEveryone knows that the best way to properly get into the rhythm of a new city is to ask a local what they like to do.

Rather than accost someone on their way to work, why not download the Time Out London app? Search by activity, area or date and it’ll give up-to-date information for everything that’s going on during your stay. timeout.com

MEDITATIONIf you’re on holiday, you probably won’t feel too stressed, but you should allow time to relax and unwind.

Access your inner calm without denting your bank balance at Inner Space, London’s oasis of calm. Thirty-minute meditation classes run every Friday evening in Covent Garden and the City. innerspace.org.uk

THE BRITISH MUSEUMPlenty of London’s museums have free entrance (although there might be an additional charge for some exhibitions),

but the one that tops every list is the British Museum. Its two million-plus items embrace world-wide cultures. Don’t miss Egypt’s Rosetta Stone, Greece’s Elgin Marbles and England’s Sutton Hoo Viking ship burial. Open daily. britishmuseum.org

CEREMONY OF THE KEYS AT THE TOWER OF LONDONOne of the best things about London is its pomp, pageantry and proud sense of history. The Ceremony of

the Keys – the tradition of locking up the Tower of London – has taken place every night for 700 years. It’s free to watch this ancient custom, with around 40 others, but you’ll need to apply in advance. hrp.org.uk

FRIDAY NIGHT SKATEWant to make tracks, get some exercise and meet some cool new people? Then Friday Night Skate is

for you! Meet at Hyde Park corner at 8pm and you – with 100 other skaters – will be whisked on a 10-15 mile route around the city. All you need is yourself, some skates, protective gear and a sense of adventure. lfns.co.uk

Jasbe Błonia borders Park Kasprowicza, heralded by its huge amphitheatre, seating 4,500.

2. RESTAURANT KARCZMA POLSKA POD KOGUTEMThis rustic venue is highly rated for traditional Polish food. Take an outside table overlooking picturesque Lotników Square if the spring weather allows. Carpaccio of beef tenderloin is 28 złoty. karczmapodkogutem.pl

For more extensive ruins, head north to Forest Park (off map) and Quistorpa Wieza Ruiny, a former observation tower from the early 1900s, with nearby hiking trails.

4. CAFÉ 22If you want the top spot for a panoramic view, and all for the price of a coffee, head up the PZM tower at Plac Rodła. From here you can look west to Park Deromskiego, the River Oder and Lake Dabie, south to Central Cemetery and north to Park Lesny Głe bokie to get the full extent of Szczecin's

These stylish and lightweight headphones come in a host of fun colours

ou can always count on the Scandinavians when it comes to cool style and simple, clean

design. Just about everything they do seems to be in vogue, be it fashion, interior design, dining or even TV detective shows. These brightly coloured Bagis headphones, by Swedish brand Urbanears, show that Scandi cool can extend to gadgets and accessories, too.

Choosing headphones is not a task to be lightly undertaken – after all, MP3-lovers want to do their tunes justice – but there are so many brands out there and you

Ydon’t want to pay premium for a poor quality product. Urbanears shows that you can select a pair of affordable headphones with style and substance in equal measure. This Swedish company has a wide selection of vibrant headphones, and although we like their over-the-ear headphones, in a variety of snazzy colours, we think the compact Bagis are excellent value for money. At just £24.90 (€29), they offer fairly stellar sound (the bass could be a little punchier for our liking) and good noise reduction. The packaging (sadly it doesn’t come in a paint pot!) is neat too: a clean, simple and smooth box in the

colour of your chosen headphones. If you’re prone to snagging your headphone wire on coat zips and pockets, its rubber housing is cleverly combined with fabric and TPE cord, which also eliminates distortions caused by friction. They’ve even got a microphone with a simple button. The headphones come with multiple ear tips to make sure you get the right fit. The best bit, though? All the different colours you can choose from. Our favourites are olive, grape and pumpkin, (pictured above) but you can also take your pick from coral, forest green, indigo, petrol blue and mocca. Urbanears.com

SPECIALIZED PROPERO II HELMETThe days when a bike helmet looked like an oversized mushroom are long gone, and vanity is no excuse for not wearing this essential piece of lifesaving kit. Luckily today you can find a helmet in almost any shape, size and colour, for if you want to bomb down a steep hill, sprint along a flat

stretch of road, or simply go about your daily commute. The Specialized Propero II helmet is a race-inspired design, but its great fit and fantastic value means that it’s well suited for any rider. Thanks to its 4th Dimension Cooling and matrix internal reinforcement, ventilation is excellent, and the helmet’s soft DryLite webbing won’t stretch when it

gets wet – whether you get caught out in a dramatic downpour or too sweaty on that killer hill! Its four position height adjustability means that you can securely and easily refit the helmet while riding. Specialized say they set out to make the best road helmet with this model. We say they aren’t far off. specialized.co.uk £69.99 PH

In the space of a year, Warsaw’s burgers have gone from fast food to slow food quality. We meet the people

behind the city’s new gourmet craze

t’s 11.50am on a Friday. A crowd of hungry young professionals and hipsters are circling Warburger, a little black-and-white cabin in a leafy northern pocket of Warsaw. Inside, an energetic duo are bustling

about, organising grass-fed beef patties, sliced Mimolette cheese, bacon, jalapeño peppers and freshly baked buns. In ten minutes, the first of the midday masses will be chowing down on the city's latest foodie fad: gourmet burgers.

Warsaw is currently reaping the benefits of a culinary coming of age, with restaurants embracing high quality food and an adventurous philosophy. But it’s the classic American hamburger that has captured this city’s heart with a slew of brand new burger joints popping up in the last year. But with so many contenders vying for the burger supremacy, the question is: how do they all stack up? Armed with extra napkins, we take an eat-and-run tour of the city’s best burger bars.

“It took some time for the people of Warsaw to realise that burgers don’t necessarily have to be junk food – they can be high quality cuisine,” says Kamila Dziudziek, business development manager of Charlie Food & Friends. Set up by Maciej Adamaszek, creator of the popular café chain W Beigu Café, this modern dining spot makes a striking statement in its location, within the grand Rondo 1 tower. Inside, lime green chairs, LED spotlights and large photographs of urban landmarks fill the pristine white, semi-industrial space. But the menu is what makes Charlie’s special: you get to create a bespoke burger from a wide selection of buns and toppings – you can even choose the grill-time of your meat. “Charlie’s recipe for good burgers is making them personal,” says Kamila. “With over 20 different add-ons, our Pick&Mix self-service menu has something for every taste. We also strive to add a little wit to our burgers by offering toppings such as cooked pears, tapenade, beetroot or parsley-root in honey and herbs.”

“We were the first food truck to serve original burgers in Warsaw, or maybe even in Poland. This created a lot of hype, resulting in a lot of good and bad burger bars that have since sprung up around the city,” says Marek Ignaciuk, who set up Soul Food Bus with fellow burger lover Michał Krzaklewski in 2011. Soul Food Bus specialises in creative American- and Mexican-inspired burgers. The bacon cheeseburger is a standout favourite, but the more extravagant Jamaican (dressed with grilled pineapples), Swiss (including Brie cheese and ruccola) and Pimento (with salami and pimento sauce) are also knock-your-socks-off delicious. “The best burgers are the ones where all the ingredients work together harmoniously, but at the heart lies the meat, which has to be unique and original to stand out. We source ours from a farm in Podlasie.”

“WE STRIVE TO PREPARE THE MOST SUCCULENT AND JUICY BURGERS THAT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND”

“Each customer is very special to us, so we put effort into preparing each and every burger,” says Norbert Turek, burger maestro at Bobby Burger’s mobile unit. His boss, Bogumił “Bobby” Jankiewicz, agrees: “Our goal has always been to sell quality burgers where there are lots of people but a lack of good food.” What began as a trailer catering for lunchtime office crowds is now a brick-and-mortar premises in the cool Powisle precinct.

“We only cooperate with a small, select group of suppliers and carefully select each ingredient,” says Norbert. “We strive for the perfect balance between meat and fat to prepare the most succulent and juicy burgers that will blow your mind.” You won’t find whimsically-named items here, just a stripped-down menu of four burger-on-bun creations, each with a succulent beef patty and your choice of melting cheese, crispy bacon and sauces. “It’s important to let the quality of the main ingredients shine,” says Nobert.

“Slow food really came into focus last year and Warsaw’s palate began craving premium, fresh ingredients,” says Maciej Folman of Barn Burger. This downtown venue – dreamt up by Maciej and partner Jacek Petryk on the first day of the EURO 2012 Football Championships – has caused a buzz, thanks to its selection of mouth-watering burgers. Unusual additions (grilled tofu, truffle sauce, cranberries and Tatra Highlander oscypek cheese) certainly help, but there's also the softness of the bun and, of course, the tender beef.

“It’s all about getting the right meat,” says Maciej. “Each of our burgers, from the spicy Muppet Burger (jalopeños, bacon and ‘SOS’ BBQ sauce) to the Rockefeller Burger (bacon, parmesan, truffles and pasta), have a blend of carefully selected Charolais beef that gives exceptional depth of flavour.

“Our deluxe steak burgers made from 300g of ground rib-eye and tenderloin appeals to connoisseurs. We also have a monthly rotation of Limited Edition burgers garnished with unexpected toppings such as caviar, seafood, ginger and avocados.”

“After eating good burgers in several European capitals, we realised that it was time to introduce them to Warsaw,” says owner Bartek Pirkel, who with Adam Zakrzewski forms the Warburger unit. It's all about contemporary, bare-bones design, a relaxed vibe and exemplary burger-building prowess. Its arsenal of quirky variations include the Giacomo Burger topped with pesto and a fried egg, and the Wild Burger with venison and goats’ cheese. “The Slow Food movement has caught on in Poland and our burgers are a great example of that. We source ingredients locally, focusing on seasonal produce and free-range gourmet meat. People can eat here several dozen times and not get bored – as the queue shows!”

MALTA

wo days isn’t enough!” my Maltese friends Michael and Jennifer exclaim when I tell them

I’m coming to Malta to experience the island like a local. Their email recommends I stay at least four days, especially seeing as there are no trains on the island to ease my journey. “Only buses,” they say, “which are fine around the capital, Valletta, but can be unreliable further out.” Reading this, I laugh. I’ve done my homework and the island of Malta is small enough to cross in under an hour, so a minor bus delay would hardly upset my agenda.

Travel today isn’t about ticking off the sights in a guidebook; and travellers want to see more than just the usual tourist hotspots. And, thanks to the internet and social media channels, this is possible in almost every destination. So, before I packed my bags, I hit up Twitter, Facebook, e-mail, you name it, trying to come up with the ultimate “must-do” list for my stay in Malta.

Michael and Jennifer were my first port of call, having lived in Malta for many years, and been my friends even longer. Top on their list is the Hypogeum; a subterranean burial ground (hypogeum

means ‘underground’) hewn by ingeniously following natural fault lines in living rock to construct a structurally sound complex of three levels, the oldest dating back to 3300BC. “This must be booked months in advance and you can do this online at booking.heritagemalta.org,” they tell me. True to their word, when I arrive, a sign states that the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum is fully booked for the month. Luckily, I’d listened to their advice and reserved my spot early. (Note: 20 tickets are released daily at the Museum of Fine Arts, Valletta, at a premium for late planners/early risers).

My next destination is St John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta. This Catholic cathedral was commissioned in 1572 as

a conventual church for the Knights of St John who succeeded in defending the faith against the invading Turks. In the 1820s, it gained Co-Cathedral status when the Bishop of Malta was granted permission to use it as an alternative see (seat) to his cathedral in Mdina. While its exterior remains true to the fortresses of the time, the interior, which was re-decorated in the 17th century is a spectacle for the eyes. Gilded in gold, its baroque style is a magnificent display of reverence across eight mini-chapels, each dedicated to the eight “langues” (lands of origin) of the Knights.

As I stroll Valletta’s streets, taking in the red and green enclosed balconies, narrow alleys and hidden museums, I understand

T

why Wizz Air passenger Iva Ivanova wrote “La Valletta: love, love, love” on the Wizz Air Facebook page. I uncover the Manoel Theatre (one of the oldest working theatres in Europe) and view the Three Cities (the Knights' fortified cities of Cospicua, Vittoriosa and Senglea) from the Upper Barrakka Gardens as I place my trust in Facebook, again, for some Maltese fare.

Quick off the mark, my friend Kristina Gatt tells me to “Have one of the massive sandwiches they sell on the waterfront called a ftira – so tasty!” By now I’ve meandered into the silent city of Mdina and, after exploring its beautiful ancient streets and gawping over its panoramic island-views, I stumble across Fontanella Tea Garden (1 Bastion Street, fontanellateagarden.com) in one of its bastions. Kristina wasn’t kidding, the sandwich is enormous, overstuffed with tuna and tomatoes. I waddle along to her next suggestion: “Ta’ Qali craft village is cute. I used to love watching the glass blowing.”

The village is quaint and the glassware, a rainbow of colour and designs. A craftsman manipulates the molten material with ease into everything from a swan to a fish.

Tonight, I’ve been invited by a Msida local to the Hard Rock in Valletta Waterfront for a comedy night in English. As I navigate the massive drinks queue, Richard Light, a Kent University student who’s studying in Malta and moonlighting in comedy, regales me with a tale of Comino, a small Maltese island north of the mainland. “Jumping off a cliff into its Blue Lagoon is one of my most memorable moments. I saw pictures before I went and thought it looked beautiful, but seeing it for real is amazing.” Well, you can guess where I’m headed tomorrow.

“And see Dingli Cliffs if you’re into nature,” he adds. “They overlook the sea and it’s lovely to roam around.”

Marked by the charming St Mary Magdalene Chapel, Dingli Cliffs sit on Malta’s western coast and are the island’s highest point. High as in 250m above sea level. Still, it’s an impressive drop of rolling fields and farms all the way to water’s edge. A glance in the other direction confirms my opinion of the mainland’s size as I’m granted even more sea views… only now they’re of Valletta’s harbour on the east.

With no time to roam (sorry Richard!), I hop back in the car with my mind set on getting a picture of the Blue Grotto. The boats that weave through its network of sea caves aren’t running due to high winds (and sadly, neither is my boat to the Blue Lagoon), though the view from above is arresting. A high arc of rock and scattered vegetation stretches into the blue, opening the cave to a stream of sunlight that plays wonders with the aqua-coloured water.

Boats on my mind, I detour to the fishing village of Marsaxlokk, where traditional boats (luzzu) painted in rich colours and adorned with the lucky Phoenician

Eye of Horus, overtake the port. Morning catches are sold to waterfront restaurants like Southport Villa & Gardens (Xatt is-Sajjieda Street, southport.com.mt) who alter their menu accordingly, but for a catch closer to the capital, Sciacca (St Augustine Street, sciaccamalta.com) in St Julian’s is a worthy alternative. Modern and chic, its offering of fresh seafood is a culinary delight. I ask the chef for his recommendation and complement it with the local Medina wine as my phone buzzes.

”Where are you?” The message reads. “You know where Le Méridien in Balluta Bay

is? We’re going to Simon’s Pub, which is near it.” No. I don’t know. And neither does my taxi driver, who leaves me to my own devices at the hotel. After a short trek up a steep road, the row of bars where Simon’s Pub lives comes into view (Triq Mons. G. Depiro). It’s a kitsch affair in what looks like a converted townhouse with all manner of paraphernalia lining its glowing green walls. My invitee, Laura, who lives in St Julian’s, greets me from her table. She’s a Lithuanian ex-pat working and adoring the sunshine here. “What are your plans for tomorrow?” she enquires. I mention Golden Bay and her eyes light up. She proceeds to direct me towards its adjacent (and her preferred) beach, Ghajn Tuffieha.

I spy it from atop the cliff that borders the two beaches. On one side is Golden Bay, an open and inviting expanse of yellow sand. On the other, a narrow and remote beachfront, tucked neatly away and accessible only via a steep flight of stairs. I grit my teeth as I descend the 70-something steps to the end of my challenge and reassure myself that I’ll deal with the climb back when I have to. After all, who am I to deny the expert opinion of a local?

n 2008, Glasgow was chosen by UNESCO to become the UK’s first – and still only – City

of Music. It was international recognition that Scotland’s biggest city has a unique relationship with song, from traditional ballads to thumping dance music. It’s a place with a rich, almost symphonic history of music spanning different genres, with venues that became famous worldwide. The Glasgow Apollo was totemic in the late 1970s and early 1980s, a slightly scuzzy converted cinema where bands like Status Quo and AC/DC recorded popular live albums. These days, the site of the Apollo is home to the tallest cinema in Europe, but its spirit lives on in venues throughout the city, notably the Barrowland, an ageing but glamorous ballroom in the east end, where My Bloody Valentine played in March.

The diversity of Glasgow’s music scene can be experienced by walking along

I

Sauchiehall Street, the city’s most famous boulevard. At one end, there’s the Royal Concert Hall, home to classical concerts and the annual Celtic Connections roots festival. Further down, there’s the high-ceilinged ABC, where acts as varied as The Script, Europe and Bat For Lashes have played in the past year. And as you

approach Charing Cross, there’s a trio of independent music bars: the notorious Nice N’Sleazy, famous for its eclectic jukebox; the ice-cool Broadcast, which books international cutting-edge acts; and raucous The Box, where energetic young bands with names like Gordon’s Alive! take their musical baby steps.

Glaswegians love music, but for those not familiar with the city, getting a handle on the labyrinthine scene can be tricky. Walking Heads (walkingheads.net), a local company, has tried to make things easier for visiting music fans with a smartphone app that includes an exhaustive directory of venues – with locations, contact details and up-to-date gig listings – and a selection of audio tours to guide you round the key musical spots, narrated by DJ Jim Gellatly.

Gellatly has tirelessly championed new music in Scotland for many years on Xfm and, latterly, Absolute Radio. He moved to Glasgow in 2000. “As a music fan, what struck me when I moved here was that people I’d admired, like the lead singer of The Pastels, would be hanging out in the coffee shop down the road,” he says. “There’s something quite unique about Glasgow. It’s a creative place and it attracts creative people from all over. One minute they’ll be serving you a beer in Nice N’Sleazy and the next week you’ll recognise them playing up on stage at King Tut’s.”

Recording the Walking Heads tours gave Gellatly the opportunity to meet some interesting people. “It’s not just me talking about what’s going on right now,” he says. “You get a sense of the musical heritage too. I spoke to the legendary promoter Tam Coyle about the time Oasis first played at King Tut’s when he was the booker there. And that was the night that Alan McGee signed the band.” There are four different walking audio tours tailored to different parts of the city, and Gellatly reckons even locals might learn something along the way.

Graeme MacDonald is singer and guitarist in This Silent Forest (thisissilentforest.com), a hotly-tipped young Glasgow band about to release their debut album after two years gigging in the city. He thinks that becoming involved in the Glasgow scene influenced his songwriting. “I used to be called a folk singer because it was just me and a guitar,” he says. “Living in Glasgow

is how I got This Silent Forest together, and our sound became more raucous and dynamic. Musically and even lyrically, Glasgow has had a huge effect.

Everyone is very friendly – if you’re into music, they welcome you with open arms.”

Nicola Meighan is a rock writer for The Herald and has been involved in the Glasgow music scene for almost two decades. “I think what makes the city distinct is its grassroots scene and the diverse styles,” she says. “On

● Jim Gellatly recommends King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut“King Tut’s (pictured below) is legendary and the downstairs bar has got some lovely artwork on the wall and bespoke gig posters for bands like the White Stripes and Stereolab. There’s a huge blackboard listing all upcoming gigs. They also have their own specially-brewed King Tut’s beer!”272a St Vincent Street, kingtuts.co.uk

● Graeme MacDonald recommends Bloc“Bloc was where I started doing open-mic spots in Glasgow. It’s got free live music on every night, is open late and does brilliant pizza and pasta. And on a Sunday afternoon, they have the ‘Blochestra’, with up to 30 musicians playing indie songs on trombones, harps, violins and other instruments. It’s really something to experience.”117 Bath Street, twitter.com/BarBloc

● Nicola Meighan recommends Mono“The idea of a one-stop café-bar, exhibition space, record shop and music venue sounds like a tall order, but Mono, and its in-house vinyl emporium Monorail music, really has it all. It’s a regular haunt for Glasgow musicians and you’re guaranteed great tunes, a warm welcome and vegan-friendly food.”12 King’s Court, monocafebar.com

HIP GLASGOW MUSIC HANGOUTS

any given night, you could stumble upon home-grown pop, folk and indie acts gigging in venues, arts spaces and pub back-rooms, while avant-rock screams out of one basement and hip-hop swaggers out of another.”

Meighan points to bands like Belle and Sebastian, Snow Patrol and Franz Ferdinand, who used their time in Glasgow as a launchpad to the big time. It’s become a kind of blueprint, as ambitious musicians head for the city to try and replicate the career trajectory of their heroes. “There’s also a historical resonance in many Glasgow venues, and that’s probably quite inspiring,” says Meighan. “The Barrowland has been a fixture of the UK touring circuit since the 1980s, and playing there is a landmark in any band’s career.”

The next major addition to Glasgow’s sprawling list of venues will be The Hydro, a flying saucer-shaped 12,000-capacity arena situated by the River Clyde. Scheduled to open in September with early

gigs by Fleetwood Mac and Jessie J, it’ll offer a more flexible alternative to the busy but rather sterile Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) next door. “I have a young daughter and I go to a lot of big shows at the SECC,” says Gellatly. “And sometimes you don’t get the full production because of height restrictions. So I’m really looking forward to The Hydro. It’s going to be good for the city and I think it will essentially become Scotland’s national arena.”

This Silent Forest have already played headline shows at King Tut’s and the Old Fruitmarket, but MacDonald believes filling The Hydro might pose a bigger challenge. “I think it will be a long time before we’re able to sell that place out!” he laughs. “It will definitely be a distinctive-looking venue when it opens. It looks like something out of the Independence Day movie.”Wizz Air now flies to and from Glasgow International Airport

BOLOGNAFrankie Bird, author of award-winning travel blog, As The Bird Flies…

Known as the fat, learned and red city, thanks to its good food, university and warm, terracotta buildings, Bologna impresses in many unexpected ways, if you let it. Wander into the university district from Via Zamboni and you’ll find the young and edgy city with political and vibrant street art lining its famous porticos, and on Via San Leonardo there’s excellent vintage clothes shopping opportunities. Find Bar Belmeloro on via Belmeloro where you can enjoy lunch for less than €5 complete with coffee, good

sounds coming from the speakers and the coolest students for company. For the best views of the city and the rolling Emilia-Romagna hills, head along the 3.5km stretch of 666 arches that make up the world’s longest portico

up to the Sanctuary of Madonna di San Luca. And it’s essential that you reward your efforts with gelato at La Sorbetteria Castiglione (Via Castiglione 44), the best in the city.

KYIVWladimir Klitschko, World Heavyweight Champion

One mirror by itself is just a shiny surface. But bring many mirrors together, and the result is a seemingly infinite series of reflections that changes every time you look… kind of like the constant shifts in a boxing match. Visit Kyiv today, and you might experience something similar. The bustling Ukrainian capital is a fairytale city of onion domes and stunning frescoes and a hub of business and economics. You really experience every facet of modernism at Kyiv’s first design hotel, 11 Mirrors (34A B.Khmelnytskogo Street, 11mirrors-hotel.com) where I like to meet friends on the rooftop terrace and enjoy the sunset with a glass of sparkling wine and views of St. Volodymyr’s Cathedral, the National Opera House, Golden Gates and the main street, Khreshchatyk.

KUTAISIPiotr Repinski, head chef at Baltic Restaurant in London

Georgia is little known and rarely travelled to by those from outside the old Soviet Union but has some of the best food to be found anywhere in Europe – a wonderful fresh and zesty combination of Eastern Mediterranean and Central Asian. There are lots of wonderful dishes to choose from but my favourite is a dumpling in the form of pouch filled with diced meats, called khinkali. In Kutaisi there’s a restaurant called Mirzaani

(9 Rustaveli Street) and they do the best khinkali around. These dumplings are designed to be eaten straight from the pot with your fingers. You’ve got to be careful though – you can end up with juice all over your face and clothes! And while you’re in Kutaisi, you must see the Opera House on Tsminda Nino Street. It’s a truly stunning venue, inside and out. Each roof holds a lion perched with its paw on a globe, while on top of several columns stands tall warriors holding a spear. It also hosts some amazing Georgian performances.

OSLOTom Hall, Travel Editor, Lonely Planet magazine

Oslo thaws for spring, so this is the time to really enjoy the pristine Baltic landscape.

The newly redeveloped arts district of Tjuvholmen is the coolest place to hang

out – this is the first summer the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Contemporary Art (Strandpromenaden 2, afmuseet.no) has been open. Cindy Sherman’s conceptual portraits, themed Untitled Horrors, opens on 4 May, and lasts to September. Even if you don’t stay in The Thief (Landgangen 1, thethief.com) hotel next door, then go for rooftop drinks and toast the archipelagos around you.

LJUBLJANAChristopher Lukezic, marketing and communications director for Airbnb travel rentals, Eastern Europe

While my ancestry may make me biased, Slovenia is one of my favourite countries, and its capital – Ljubljana – is one of the world's best-kept secrets. Devoid of the crowds of summer tourists that you might encounter in some other European cities, Ljubljana is blessed with a village-like charm, and it has

some of the best food and nightlife imaginable! While Monday through to Friday I’m at Airbnb, the weekends I pursue my other passion – music. As a DJ, one of my favourite spots in Ljubljana is Klub K4 (ul. Kersnikova 4, klubk4.org). You’ll often find some of the best DJs in the world playing there, but more exciting is their continued effort to showcase Slovenian DJs, making this club the perfect destination for discovering new music.

MADRIDUp-and-coming singer Lowell is the vocalist on album If You Can, Solve This Jumble with mostly Scandi supergroup Apparatjik

Madrid is my pick for amazing food in 2013, proving that traditional tapas can be fresh and innovative, and that you can eat simple, good food in cool and kooky interiors that wouldn’t look out of place of somewhere like New York. Take the new NO restaurant (Calle Puigcerda

8, norestaurant.es), which carves out the space in stripped, and white-washed, timber beams, black-and-white graphic prints of pioneers (the first female aviator, the first gay activist) and studded throne chairs. Try the unpretentious burger

and fries, and apple pie and ice cream after a gig at Sala Arena where I played on my spring tour this year – it hosts new, and big-name, artists. I’ll also go back to an old cider house restaurant called Casa Mingo (Paseo de la Florida 34, casamingo.es) where the speciality of the house is roast chicken, served by ancient, but still very flirtatious, waiters.

VENICEUrsula Lake, swimwear designer and founder of Violet Lake, worn by Gwyneth Paltrow, Naomi Watts and Olivia Palermo

2013 is the return of the Venice Biennale (labiennale.org); every two years the contemporary art scene provides a cultural contrast to the gorgeous classical backdrop. Running until November, it’s probably the world’s most prestigious art festival. May sees the Dance Biennale perform its short choreographies in San Marco and the Arsenale, taking over the courtyards, cloisters and other intimate city spaces for the last three days of June.

Venice being Venice, there’s a high chance if you go with your partner that you may have amorous thoughts in mind – and it doesn’t get much more romantic than the Riva Rosa restaurant on the island of Burano. Book ahead to reserve the roof terrace table for two. It overlooks the brightly painted houses and canals, and serves delicious, light, traditional Venetian food with an emphasis on fish. From here, you are perfectly placed for a stroll around the island taking in the lace shops for which the island is famous for (and a fashion designer like me swoons over!)

I like Thessaloniki’s unpretentious edginess. The recession hit the country hard, but one of the few happy consequences is that businesses have come together to support and champion local produce. If you take a few turns off the main strip, Tsimiski Street, into Kouskoura Street, you’ll find a restaurant called Ergon (ergonproducts.gr) and its sister deli – or ‘grocery’ as they call it – next door. They’re both run by young entrepreneurs,

brothers George and Thomas Douzis, with a little help from Dad and Dimitris Skarmoutsos in the kitchen – a judge on MasterChef Greece. I suggest you gorge on delicious fresh tapas such as fava bean dip or crisply coated aubergine and goats’ cheese in the relaxed, chatty cafe. The deli is very well priced considering the fantastic quality, and they sell a sweet mustard and olive tapenade that I would literally fly back to restock if I could. Luckily, they have a store opening in London this spring so I won’t have to.’

I predict that tourism will take off in Lviv this year – so get there before everyone

else does! We filmed there for Long Way Round with Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman. When we entered Ukraine, it was almost like stepping back in time, with fields being turned over with horse-drawn ploughs and checkpoints manned by fantastic characters in very big hats. Fascinating and wonderfully friendly! Head for the town squares where you’ll find chess games set up on uneven streets, then take a tram

BUCHARESTCraig Turp, Editor-in-chief of In Your Pocket, Europe’s biggest publisher of locally produced city guides

Bucharest’s nocturnal charms are in a different league. Clubbers in the know have been beating a path here for years, others are now following. And it’s not all about the superclubs either – although the extravagant wealth at venues like Player (Str. Primo Nebiolo 5, theplayer.

ro) has to be seen to be believed (Recession? Crisis? Not here!). Bucharest is also now a seriously good incubator of live acts: Mojo Music Club (Str. Gabroveni 14, mojomusic.ro) in the thumping Old Town has local bands of all musical persuasions performing almost every night of the week, cutting their live teeth in front of the city’s toughest audience. And when new bands aren’t playing, the resident Mojo covers band is.

the mansions in Koszuty and Russów are a good start to your tour.

Wielkopolska is also a land of lakes, rivers and forests, as well as moraine hills adding variety to its landscapes. Here you can take a break from your hectic life, and just relax or you can choose active tourism. Over 1,800 km long, Wielkopolska System of Cycling Routes has been marked with GPS tracks.www.wielkopolska.travel

GNIEZNO Gniezno is the most important place along the Piast Route, the oldest Polish tourist trail linking the key heritage sites related to the earliest history of Poland when Christianity was introduced here. The greatest attraction of Gniezno is the Cathedral which witnessed the coronation of the Polish kings from the Piast dynasty; it is also the resting place of St. Adalbert and it hosted a meeting of King Bolesław Chrobry and German Emperor Otto III. It is also here that you can see the bronze Gniezno Doors, ranking among the most valuable Romanesque artefacts in Europe. In the vicinity of Gniezno is another attraction closely connected with the early history of Poland – the island of Ostrów Lednicki, which can be accessed by ferry. The area formerly

occupied by Prince Mieszko’s fortified settlement holds ruins of his palatium and chapel dating from the 10-11th century. This is the best preserved structure from this period throughout Europe. www.tupowstalapolska.pl www.wielkopolska.travel

WOLSZTYN – STEAM LOCOMOTIVE DEPOT Wielkopolska has unique attractions on offer for enthusiasts of railways. Tourists come here in great numbers to take trips by narrow gauge trains, or draisines (in Krzywin and Grodzisk Wielkopolski), and visit Wolsztyn and the only operating locomotive depot in Europe.

The locomotive depot provides scheduled services. At its premises you can also see historical train carriages, draisines, railway equipment and accessories. The best known locomotive is Beautiful Helena, Pm 36-2, which in 1937 received gold medal at the exhibition in Paris. It reaches the speed of 130 km/h. The oldest locomotive here dates from 1917. Each year in late April and early May the famous Locomotive Parade takes place here; the event attracts visitors from the farthest corners of the world. Tourists can take a romantic trip by a scheduled steam train running between Wolsztyn and Poznan or by one of the trains specially organized for tourists.www.thewolsztynexperience.orgwww.parowozy.com.plwww.turystyka-kolejowa.eu

RYDZYNAWielkopolska Region has a wealth of castles, palaces and manor houses. Today these historical buildings hold museums, hotels, restaurants as well as conference and leisure centres.

Particularly noteworthy is the castle in Rydzyna, which is one of the most impressive Baroque structures in Poland. Following wartime destruction its interiors were reconstructed with great care. The grand halls embellished with stucco decorations and ancient-style ornaments hold numerous cultural events, social gatherings and conferences. The castle holds a hotel, restaurant and museum. It is surrounded with a moat and an old park. The entire castle complex and the urban layout of Rydzyna are recognized among the Gems of Baroque in Poland. Rydzyna is located approximately 90 km south of Poznan. www.wielkopolska.travel/ebooks/pl/turystyka_kulturowa/palace_i_zamki/www.zamek-rydzyna.com.plwww.wielkopolska.travel

GREAT LOOP OF WIELKOPOLSKATourist trail called the Great Loop of Wielkopolska is the Region’s longest water trail. Its total length is 687.9 km and it comprises the rivers Warta and Notec as well as Slesinski Lake and Canal. The trail of the Great Loop has good infrastructure for enthusiasts of motor boating and kayaking. The network of harbours, marinas and slips provides conditions for having a rest, meal or technical repairs. On average it takes 30 days to sail along the entire trail – along the way you can stop and visit landmarks such as the Museum of Agriculture in Szreniawa, the former Cistercian monastery in L d, the palace in Smiełów or

the basilica in Lichen. The Great Loop leads through protected natural areas - Wielkopolski National Park, Rogalinski Landscape Reserve. In Wilczy Park in Stobnica it is possible to see wolves. Travelling along the Notec River you can admire historical navigation locks – a real historical landmark of technology.www.wielkopolska.travel

KALISZOf all Polish towns Kalisz has the oldest birth certificate. Records of the ancient Calisia date from the 2nd century A.D. The oldest tribal stronghold (first half of the 9th century) and then the early-Piast settlement were built in areas adjoining the river Prosna – today this part of Kalisz is called Zawodzie. The significance of the settlement is confirmed by the fact that a church was built within its limits as early as the first half of the 11th century. Today the location holds an archaeological reserve with replicas of early medieval buildings. During the tourist season the Fortified Piast Settlement in Kalisz hosts a number of thematic open-air events where one can see living history shows, participate in presentations and crafts workshops as well as get the taste of medieval cuisine. www.wielkopolska.travel

BICYCLE TOURING Wielkopolska System of Cycling Routes at present comprises 9 trans-regional routes of the total length of 1,800 km. All the trails are marked along easily accessible roads, with low traffic; they lead to the farthest corners of Wielkopolska. These routes are linked with international and local bike trails whose estimated length exceeds 6,000 km. The System is the first and the pioneering element of GPSwielkopolska Project, which promotes the use of satellite navigation technologies in tourism. GPS tracks of the System can be downloaded free of charge at www.gpswielkopolska.pl

Wielkopolska System of Cycling Routes stands out for the great thematic diversity of the specific trails. Enthusiasts of wildlife and natural landmarks will enjoy Nadwarcianski Bike Route along the Warta River, as well as the Hundred Lakes Route. The early history of Poland can be explored along the Piast Bike Route. The limitless stretches of wildlife as well as cultural heritage sites are a domain of the Trans-Wielkopolska Bike Route. Amber Bike Trail leading along the old trade route will be favoured by those travelling with panniers. Ziemianski (Gentry) Bike Route leads to Wielkopolska’s most typical landmarks, such as manor houses, palaces, stud farms and historic churches and monasteries. The Cycling Route around Poznan is most popular because of its proximity to the large city.

For a few years now special trains have also come here from Berlin and Cottbus, and most recently also from Dresden; these are pulled by German locomotives and bring here thousands of enthusiasts of old choo-choo trains from the other bank of the Oder river. In recent years the event has been expanded to include an evening show entitled “Light, Sound, Steam”.

Malta Festival Poznan - 24-29 June 2013 - PoznanThis is one of the most important performance art festivals in Poland and Europe. The theatre festival has been regularly held in the capital of Wielkopolska since 1991. The name of the event makes a reference to Maltanskie Lake located within the city limits. Malta Festival was launched to provide space for showcasing independent, fringe and experimental theatres. In time the formula of the Festival was expanded to include other types of art. Today during Malta you can see performances of pop musicians, dance theatre groups, and circus-style artists; there are also films screenings, lectures, and theatre workshops open for the public. www.malta-festival.pl

Gliders’ Picnic Leszno. Spread Your Wings - 29-30 June 2013 - LesznoEach year the event attracts thousands of participants, mainly families with children. During the gliding picnic guests can enjoy numerous attractions: aerobatics, parachuting shows, and presentations of flight gear; they can also take trips in gliders, airplanes and balloons. On this occasion one can encounter knights and their maids strolling around the settlement. Various medieval craftsmen, dwelling in the cottages, present their goods and conduct workshops for visitors. Children can make clay pots or write a letter with a quill. The brave ones may try their hand in swordsmanship, or participate in dance, weaving or blacksmithing workshops.

Barcelona, SpainTOUCH DOWNBarcelona never truly hibernates but, like a beautiful reptile – represented by Gaudi’s technicolour lizard at the gates of Park Güell (pictured right) – the spring sun warms her glassy skin and spurs her into activity. Café terraces, plaza benches and park lawns fill up with cerveza-swigging locals, tourists ram La Rambla and burst onto the beach... and the festival season gets under way.

GET OUTSant Jordi (St. George) is the patron saint of Catalonia and on his feast day, 23 April, tradition dictates that men should regale their women with flowers, and that women should offer their menfolk a sturdy book in return.

Buy either from the stalls on La Rambla. From 26 April to 5 May, La Feria de Abril comes to town, bringing flamenco, Ferris wheels and candy floss from the south of Spain to the Parc del Forum.

EAT WELLEl Boo beach club (Espigó de Bac de Roda 1, +34 932 250 100) serves up fresh fritters and frutos del mar, plus cocktails on its terrace. And if the temperature drops in the evening, the Flemish beef stew at Gilda (Calle Ample 34, +34 93 31 03 492) will put some fire back in your belly.

DRINK UP At Milk Bar (C/Gignas 21,+34 932 680 922) order a

Bucharest, Romania TOUCH DOWNBucharest does spring magnificently, with locals emerging from their long winter hibernation and heading for the nearest terrace the moment the temperature allows. Even the smallest café, bar or

restaurant will find at least one table to stick outside on the pavement.

GET OUTWhile the impressive Palace of Parliament gives concrete a good name, the city is home

to some magnificent parks, and they all bloom in spring, each trying to outdo the other with their fabulous flower displays. Cismigiu Gardens (pictured left), in the city centre, is the pick of the bunch.

EAT WELLThe stunning interiors, great Romanian food and Old Town location of Caru’ cu Bere (Strada Stavropoleos 5, +40 21 313 7560) mean you will need to wait for a table here if you have not booked (especially if you want to sit outside). The platou of grilled meats for two is great value. Also in the Old Town is Divan (Strada Franceza 46-48, +40 21 312 3034). With great value Turkish food, superb wine, live music and dancing at weekends, and a wide selection

of aromatic tobaccos to smoke from a hookah pipe.

DRINK UPIf you don’t visit Biutiful (Strada Gabroveni 6-8, +40 737 297 297) while in Bucharest, then you’ve missed out on the most amazing bar to open here in years. It’s serves good beer, cocktails and bar food to an extremely hip crowd of locals.

Budapest, HungaryTOUCH DOWNSpring in Budapest sees the opening of the city’s outdoor spas and open-air pools, as terrace tables spread over pavements across town. By May, Budapest’s

‘ruin bars’ provide alfresco drinking in urban residential courtyards. Try the Ellátó kert (Kazinczy utca 48, ellatokert.blogspot.hu) in the heart of the bar quarter in District VII, or

Kertem (kertemfesztival.hu)in the City Park.

GET OUTTo relax during the day, head to Margaret Island where the Palatinus lido (palatinusstrand.hu) opens its pools from 1 May.

EAT WELLThe traditional restaurants of hilly Buda open their gardens from spring, including the Vadrózsa (Pentelei Molnár utca 15, vadrozsa.hu). Don’t forget that spring is the season of gyümölcsleves, or fruit soup (pictured left), a healthy cold starter to any outdoor meal.

DRINK UPFor this spring season, spa party crew Cinetrip (cinetrip.hu) is

moving from the Széchenyi fürdö baths to the Lukács (lukacsfurdo.hu) every Saturday during April and May, with DJs spinning for a crowd in swimming gear. Look out for the All Inn Records night on 12 April at the A38 boat (a38.hu), the city’s key live music venue by the Petofi Bridge.

Gdansk, PolandTOUCH DOWNAfter surviving the Baltic winter, the Tri-city (Gdansk, Sopot and Gdynia) locals visibly brighten as the temperature increases. This region is perfect for outdoor activities, with its comprehensive network of walking and cycle paths along the coast and through the forests.

GET OUTWith spring a time for renewal, take a trip to Sopot (pictured), which has a rich history as a spa town thanks to the healing waters of St Wojciech spring. Choose between one of the many spa packages in places such as the seafront spa at the Sheraton Hotel (ul. Powstanców Warszawy 10, Sopot +48 (0)58 767 1900).

EAT WELLIn a former life Gdansk went by the German name of Danzig – and you can still enjoy the home-brewed beer and pork knuckle experience by visiting Brovarnia (ul. Szafarnia 9, +48 58 320 1970) situated in a beautifully renovated granary building on the waterfront.

DRINK UPWhile Sopot has gone a bit more mainstream and commercial in recent years, there are still typically Sopot places to be found to enjoy a beer or a nightcap. Try Błekitny Pudel (‘The Blue Poodle’; ul. Bohaterow Monte Cassino 44, +48 58 551 1672) where you can sit among antiques and bric-a-brac to enjoy

friendly service and a host of drinks with a slightly older more Bohemian crowd.

Gothenburg, SwedenTOUCH DOWNApril is when the city’s botanical gardens (pictured right) burst into colour, cafés swell onto the streets, and the car-free, craggy islands that make up the Southern Archipelago beg to be explored.

GET OUTJust 12 minutes from the mainland with the public ferry, Knarrholmen is a tiny island with its own two-daymusic festival (knarrholmen.com).Around 2,000 people attended last year’s event, camping out among the birch trees and barbecuing on the rocks. This year’s festival runs 24-25 May, featuring some of Sweden’s best DJs and indie bands.

EAT WELLGothenburg’s newly refurbished indoor market, Saluhallen, is the place to come for handmade cakes, freshly baked buns and cuts of Swedish sausage. A short walk away on Rosenlundsvägen is Feskekörkan (‘fish church’) where shoppers tuck into mounds of fresh shellfish, including oysters. and the Street Art Festival (pictured below) from 19-28 April, (katowicestreetartfestival.pl) features a wide range of interactive events, mural installations, exhibitions and concerts. If you want great views of Kraków’s historical

EAT WELLSpring society in Kraków centres around the Vistula River, and the area around the pedestrian bridge linking Kazimierz with Podgórze. Become an instant socialite by wining and dining in style on the deck of the Restauracja Alrina riverboat (Bulwar Kurlandzki, +48 668 82 0454), or visit Kraków’s latest buzz-creator, ZaKładka (ul. Prague, Czech RepublicTOUCH DOWNPrague is undeniably pretty whatever the season but its fairytale vistas are particularly resplendent in spring. On 1 May, head for

Petrín Hill where you can admire the skyline and give your beloved a kiss under one of the cherry blossoms: according to Czech tradition, this ensures lasting love.

GET OUT Go highbrow and grab tickets for Prague Spring (festival.cz), one of Europe’s most celebrated classical music festivals, from 12 May into June.

EAT WELLFor karma-free cuisine, check out Zen hidden gem Maitrea (6 Týnská ulicka, +420 221 711 631), behind Old Town Square. Non-carnivores can sample veggie versions of national signature dishes such as svícková and dumplings and enjoy the feng shui interior. Riga, LatviaTOUCH DOWNThe coldest months of the year are behind us, and though snow is still a possibility in April, Riga’s tourist season officially begins now! Being full of parks, you should check out Esplanade, with its Orthodox Cathedral, the smaller Vermanes garden or the National Opera garden and Bastion Hill park. GET OUTSpring in Varna brings both locals and visitors out in force,

with many heading for the Sea Garden (pictured below), the city’s largest park and one of its main landmarks. Located directly above the Black Sea, besides offering a whole host of activities – including an open air theatre

– the park also offers some magnificent views of Varna’s beaches. Pop fans should note that from 17 to 19 May the city hosts the Varna International Pop Music Festival, a kind of Eurovision-lite.

EAT OUTYou are never too far from a decent place to eat in Varna, but a restaurant slightly off the beaten track and worth seeking out is Pri Monahinite (‘At the Nuns’) (bul. Primorski 47, +359 52 611 830), located in what was the city’s first hospital (which was run by nuns) and well known for top Bulgarian food. A little more down to earth is the Varna branch of the Bulgarian chain, Happy (bul. Slivnica 22, +359 888 18 1063, happy.bg) where women in nifty little

uniforms serve good local food at decent prices.

DRINK UPWhile many of Varna’s top night spots are open only during high season, Club Horizont (in the Sea Garden; +359 52 389 141, horizont.bg) is a popular, year-round party venue that regularly brings over top international DJs.

This spring, Wizz Air begins flights from Budapest to the small Mediterranean island of Malta. The twice-weekly flights start on 17 May with fares from €27 one-way. And April to May is the best time to be in Malta. You’ll be blessed

with plenty of sunshine, warm temperatures and crowd-free beaches and streets. Valletta, the pint-sized capital city, is a must-see. Being set on an orderly grid, it’s easy to stroll around St John’s Cathedral, the

Wizz Air has moved its routes from Glasgow to Gdansk and Glasgow to Warsaw from Glasgow Prestwick Airport to the more centrally located Glasgow International Airport. The move is more convenient for passengers, and offers travellers a better opportunity to explore Scotland’s most cosmopolitan city. Marvel at Glasgow’s iconic architecture, including the City Chambers and the Clyde ‘Armadillo’ Auditorium. For the lowdown on the city’s music scene, see our feature on page 56. Fares start at just €23.99 one-way.

What lu g gage is the W IZZ team takin g on their nex t t r ip?

I’ve just booked my summer holiday: I’m going away to Crete for a whole week of sunbathing, swimming, relaxing by the pool and eating out. I can’t wait! I’ll be taking checked-in baggage so I can pack my sunscreen and cosmetics without worrying about liquid restrictions. And, unlike other airlines, Wizz Air allows passengers to take up

My husband and I are heading to Barcelona for a three-day weekend at the end of April. With my pale skin, a big bottle of sunscreen is an absolute must, and given the restrictions on liquids in cabin bags, I’ll need a checked-in bag. I promised not to shop too much so we have opted to save our money to spend on sangria and pack just one checked-in

bag. With a 32kg allowance, I think we can manage! Insider tip: don’t fold your clothes, roll them and save lots of space! See you on the beach in Barcelona!

The one thing that I often struggle with on short-haul flights is finding a big enough space in the overhead compartments to fit my hand luggage. But with Wizz Air’s new baggage policy, it’s so much easier – people are more conscious of what size baggage they take onboard, which means there’s much more space. For a €10

additional fee I’ll be taking a larger cabin bag (up to 56 x 45 x 25cm) on my next Budapest-to- Geneva flight to bring back gifts for my friends and family.

George Michalopoulos

The next business trip I have planned is a series of meetings with suppliers in London. I’ll be flying from Gdansk to London Luton. I need to try and fit as much as I can into one day, so I’ll be catching an early morning flight and then returning back to Gdansk the same evening. I’ll only need my laptop and a couple of work documents,

so I’ll be travelling very light. Wizz Air’s free small cabin bag allowance (for bags smaller than 42 x 32 x 25cm) will be more than sufficient to meet my needs.

Cabin crew member Ana-Maria Vaduva ends her stint as WIZZ Ambassador for Romania

“I started flying with Wizz Air four years ago. That’s 3,760 hours of flying since my first day! I remember how proud I felt when I first put on my pink uniform – well, I still am today – and it was that feeling of pride that inspired me to put myself forward as a WIZZ Ambassador two years ago. Passengers voted on our Facebook page for who they wanted to win. I couldn’t believe it when it turned out to be me!

Being an Ambassador wasn’t only giant professional step forward, it was a personal one, too. I’m so lucky to have met many wonderful people across the network, and developed lots of new friendships.

As a WIZZ Ambassador, I had a lot of public appearances, interviews for magazines, photo shoots... It’s very glamorous. My favourite tasks included being in a WIZZ TV video with Brad and doing a fun Christmas promotion dressed as Santa – but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every moment as a WIZZ Ambassador.”

Do you know a Wizz Air cabin crew member who’d make a brilliant Ambassador? Join our 130,000-plus Facebook friends (facebook.com/wizzaircom) and vote for your favourite. This year, 16 Ambassadors will be chosen to represent their country and spread the WIZZ word. What are you waiting for?

air loss can be a nightmare for both men and women. It can make you look less attractive, and also lead to disadvantages within your career and limit you in your partner choice. It can lead to depression, loss of

self-confidence and even identity change. Scientists at Oxford promise to make this a thing of the

past. Their pill, TRX2, has only been on the market since 2011, but is on the verge of becoming Europe’s best-selling hair loss treatment. TRX2 is based on organic compounds, works far better than existing treatments and has no side-effects whatsoever.

“Your hair loss stops and at the same time you see new hair. Your hair will look much bigger; it becomes heavier and thicker,” says Oxford Biolabs CEO Dr Thomas Whitfield.

Hair loss treatments often

promise a lot without delivering, but TRX2 is backed by cutting-edge science and has been thoroughly tested. According to a study, TRX2 works for 87% of men and women. The results can be impressive – the average hair count increases 35.1% after nine months and 49.2% after 18. Start TRX2 as early as possible in order to increase the chances of fully regaining your hair.

TRX2 is suitable for men and women of all ages. The crystalline white capsules come in a brown glass bottle, which is sufficient for one month of treatment and costs approximately €49. The manufacturer offers a money-back guarantee if ordered via TRX2’s official website, and ships worldwide.Exclusive Wizz Air deal - order via trx2.com and use the coupon code ‘wizzair’ to receive an exclusive 10% discount!
