TOGETHER WITH YOUR PROFESSIONALS OUR ExPERTS WILL DEFINE A SERvICE THAT MEETS YOUR SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS.

More than ever, owners and operators need

to ensure that their personnel is trained to

optimize the operational capabilities.

Specialist skills enhancement training can

play a vital role in developing the workforce

in order to realize the full potential of the

ship/plant. The training programme ought

to address the skill enhancement needs of

all personnel from managers to employees,

captains to cooks, mechanics and electricians.

Case studies have shown that well planned

and implemented training reduces operating

and maintenance costs many times over.

Wärtsilä’s training programmes are

especially designed to fi t the customer in

question. It is not just a matter of selecting a

course ‘off the shelf’ in the hope that it will

be suitable for the customer. The programme

is developed in close co-operation with the

customers in order to meet their business goals.

As the drive towards increased profi ts and

higher effi ciencies gets keener, companies

are realizing the value of ‘skills enhancement’

training. The concrete results of Wärtsilä’s

courses include signifi cant cost savings.

The training needs to be relevant to the

customer’s long-term business plans and it

also needs to be continuous. The individual

course structures are well thought out and

planned so that the courses complement each

other and progress systematically. The content

of the courses continues to advance and focus

on new questions, problems and requirements.

I am confi dent that our experts, together

with your professionals, will defi ne a service

that meets the specifi c requirements of your

organization. It will integrate seamlessly with

your business and environment, transforming

your investment in employee development into

solid business results.

Yours sincerely,

Learning & Development

INTRODUCTIONLearning and development deserve as much

attention as any other management task.

Learning and development can deliver the right

people with the right skills at the right time.

KEY ENAbLING FEATURES IN MANAGING LEARNING AND DEvELOPMENTLearning and development are critical

processes for enhancing productivity and

organizational performance. Research

shows high-performing organizations share

certain features in relation to learning and

development as follows:

They align and integrate their learning •and development initiatives with

corporate and business planning by

reviewing existing activities and initiating

new learning programmes to support

corporate plans.

The corporate culture supports these •initiatives and addresses cultural barriers to

learning.

Their managers invest in, and are •accountable for, learning and development.

They focus on the business application of •training rather than the type of training, and

they consider appropriate learning options,

de-emphasizing classroom training and

allowing staff time to process what they

have learned on the job in line with adult

learning principles.

They evaluate learning and development •formally, systematically and rigorously.

6

Page 7: WLSA Course Brochure 2009 2010

WHAT DOES LEARNING AND DEvELOPMENT MEAN? Learning and development encompasses a

wide range of activities designed to improve

the capabilities of people. Capabilities comprise

not only the technical skills and knowledge

people have, but also their attributes, attitudes

and behaviour. Learning and development

activities can be designed to deliver specifi c

skills in a short period of time in order to meet

an immediate need, or designed to achieve

broader effects over a longer period.

The activities can include on-the-job

training, development opportunities, such

as special projects, practical and simulator

supported training and mentoring, as well as

formal classroom training.

OUR SERvICESWe are committed for a long term partnership

with you and our experts will be helping your

organization to establish and implement

well-proven processes ensuring that your

investment in Training and Development turns

into clear and measurable business benefi ts.
