The Languedoc Roussillon region stretches from the Pyrénées-Orientales on the Spanish border to Provence and is bathed in the warm Mediterranean climate which boasts an average 300 days of sunshine per year.

‘Boles de Picolat’A traditional local dish of lamb, beef or pork cooked in a sauce of tomato and green olives.

‘Crème Catalane’A Mediterranean take on the traditional French dish of Crème brulée, which differs through the addition of a touch of cinnamon and lemon zest. The locals will tell you that their version is the original and best (and lighter on the stomach to boot!)

‘Vins Doux Naturel’ (Sweet natural wines)With almost 40% of French wine production coming from the Western Mediterranean, you’d be forgiven for wanting to sample a bottle or three of the local produce. With its sun baked vineyards, the area is renowned for some excellent sweet wines such as Rivesaltes, Banyuls and Rimage.

At Argelès Plage the lovely sandy beach stretches for 7km. Plage du Sud is the closest beach to La Chapelle only 200m away (dogs are not allowed on this beach). Plage du Nord can be accessed by car and is 2km away from La Chapelle. The beaches at Collioure and Banyuls are smaller and more peaceful. Further up the coast are the beaches at Canet Plage which are spacious and clean and there is a children’s beach club here from early June together with a complete range of sporting and leisure facilities.

• Argelès-Plage (50m) this has good shopping facilities in high season including several small supermarkets and banks.

• Collioure (5km) there are over 30 art galleries here as well as bars, cafes and restaurants and some food shops.

• Argelès-Ville (2.5km) there are banks here (with cash points), a post office, a chemist and a ‘tabac’. On the main road into Argelès-Ville there is a large ‘Champion’ supermarket with a cash point.

• Perpignan (25km) the nearest large city. The ‘Auchan’ hypermarket is reputed to be the largest in France. Trips to the Spanish border, at Le Perthus for example, enable you to purchase tobacco and alcohol at greatly reduced prices.

• Andorra is the cheapest, with many goods, including petrol, significantly less expensive, but the trip to Andorra is by small and windy roads and does take approximately 3 hours.
