HEN WATSON AND ROSE

Goodman began printing Helpfrom Above Scripture booklets

in three African languages in their

garage in South Africa, little did they

dream all that God would do. It was not

until they moved their family to Winona

Lake, Indiana, in 1961 to begin World

Missionary Press that Scripture booklets

were printed in English. Two years later,

another major language was added—

Spanish—with help from the staff of

Spanish World Gospel Mission, also

headquartered in Winona Lake.

WMP began “casting its nets” in

Latin America, and what a harvest of

souls has resulted! As Spanish Scripture

booklets were distributed, new souls

were brought into the kingdom—

souls with a burden for evangelism,

resulting in the call for even more book-

lets! As churches emerged to disciple

the new believers, a cry came for disci-

pleship materials. WMP began printing

Bible study booklets, and then in 1983

the first WMP New Testaments were

printed—in Spanish. (That same year

Help From Above was printed in its

200th language.)

To balance the great need of material

for Spanish-speaking countries with the

needs of the whole world, Spanish print-

ings were spread out over a two-year

cycle, with WMP printing materials for

just half of its major Spanish distributers

each year.

In spite of shipping an unprecedented

19,000,000 Spanish booklets in 2011,

many distributors are already out of

stock. In view of the increased produc-

tion level God has allowed us in 2012,

and due to the dozens of major distribu-

tors who receive large shipments of

booklets, production of Spanish book-

lets this year is being broken up into

three separate print schedules. And be-

cause WMP has not printed Spanish

New Testaments since April, 2009 [see

box on page 3], there will be two sepa-

rate press runs of New Testaments.

Why such a major push to supply the churches of Latin

America with Scriptures? It’s because the Spirit of God is

moving in a mighty way, and cries are going up to heaven

for “bread” to feed the hungry souls being touched by His

Spirit.

One hundred years ago, Argentina was one of the

wealthiest nations in the world, but the Great Depression

brought about an economic, moral, and political collapse

from which the country still hadn’t fully recovered a

decade ago. A distributor wrote in 2001, “Here in Ar-

gentina, many millions [are] unemployed; a large part of

the Church has also been touched. There are lines several

blocks long of people jostling for a place out in the cold.

Not only are there unemployed, but underemployed, and

numberless delinquents, with immorality and disorder as

never before: political corruption, at times right out in the

open; impudence and family disintegration. . . . ”

He told of the baptisms of new believers over several

years, and said, “It is my petition to you that you pray also

on our behalf— due to the financial collapse that we are

going through—that Satan will not gain any advantage . . . .

I ask only for the material that you publish, if you are able

to send us some to use and give to whomever we meet.

We are evangelists, door-knockers, we are in parks and

plazas, hospitals and streets; in season and out of season,

so as to by any means save some.”

This is the kind of servant of God that WMP exists to

serve. He, like hundreds of others, had come across some

of our Scripture booklets, and immediately saw in them

the very tool he could use to greatly multiply his ministry.

And their number is growing. Rino B. (Every Home for

Christ national director who serves as WMP’s coordinator

in Argentina) is eagerly awaiting shipment of a 40-foot

sea container of booklets for faithful distributors all over

his country. It has been two years since his last ship-

ment, and he has a long list of requests waiting to be

filled.

This is just one glimpse into one Spanish-speaking

country—Argentina. We could continue down through the

alphabet with Cuba, Costa Rica, Chile, Equatorial

Guinea (the only Spanish-speaking country in Africa), El

Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, and

Panama—and still only cover a part of the massive print-

ings of Spanish scheduled for this summer and fall.

In every country are people with stories of their own,

all springing from the same burden—a burden to take the

gospel to every creature while there is still time. Eco-

nomic hardship, violence, political opposition—even

Satan’s insidious attacks—will not dissuade them from

their purpose. The only thing holding them back is the

lack of literature to finish the job.

This year marks by far our largest-ever production ofScriptures in Spanish, but will it be enough? We can

only pray that God will multiply the effectiveness of every

booklet we are able to send, and open the windows of

heaven to enable us to send even more.

[Your gift for Spanish Scripture booklets will go a longway. Every dollar provides for the printing and shipping,on average, of 25 precious, power-packed Scripture book-lets; $100 provides for 2,500.]

The 2001 economic crisis in Argentina closed thousands offactories across the country, putting millions out of work.Today, over 30 percent of the country is below the povertyline, with unemployment being one of the chief causes.

Family Continues a Father’s Legacy

Don Wollard has helped WMP from time to time by

shipping pallets to Latin America (especially Hon-

duras). He had volunteered to include all of WMP’s Hon-

duras-bound pallets on an upcoming container from his

ministry in Missouri. This included pallets

for Walter Paz, WMP’s national coordina-

tor; Ken Harrell, who has been coordinat-

ing distribution in northern Honduras; Jim

Taylor; and Tim Brechbill. Don had also

agreed to include the 1,000-box shipment

for El Salvador on one of his upcoming

containers.

Don passed away in June, just two months after a visit

to El Salvador with his missions-minded family. We were

not sure what would happen with these shipping commit-

ments, and thought perhaps we would need to send them

directly from here to Honduras and El Salvador. But Jim

Taylor sent a very encouraging e-mail regarding the Wol-

lard family’s desire to continue moving ahead.

“One of Brother Don’s final wishes,” Jim wrote, “was

that his family continue to operate and keep moving for-

ward Abundance Ministries. His wife Linda, son Jared,

and daughter Amy will all

play active roles in the

day-to-day functions of

the ministry. The plans

have not changed as far as

shipping locations or dis-

tribution. . . .

“I attended Don’s

funeral today, and have

grown even deeper in my

admiration for him. . . . I

have complete confidence

that his family will be

equally as aggressive [as

he was] in keeping their

vision alive.” Let us lift up

this family and their min-

istry in prayer.

Potential for Expansion: In light of recent production

increase and the need for space to “stage” more containersfor shipping, the WMP Board has approved making knownto you the opportunity to buy the property (4 acres and

two buildings zoned “light industrial”) adjoining WMP

for $200,000, trusting God to provide 80% ($160,000) of thepurchase price before moving ahead. $143,313 has been pro-vided to date. Please pray for God’s clear direction.

Transporting 120 pounds ofSpanish Scripture bookletsfor distribution in Honduras.

For the first time, A Bible Studyon Romans will be available

for the Spanish-speaking world.

Paul's letter to the Romans is a

message of truth about freedom.

It completely explains the amaz-

ing life of Jesus Christ—what

He has already done for us and

what He wants to do in us. Paul

shows us how God sees us—as

desperately in need of a Savior.

He shows us why we are under a death sentence,

condemned to eternal separation from God. But in this letterwe see God’s wonderful, awesome love for us, in that He

sent His own Son to take that death penalty Himself, so that

we might be free to live in marvelous fellowship with Him

now and for eternity.

“I was born again twelve years ago. However, I was un-able to have a renewal of mind until after studying A BibleStudy on Romans, recently given to me by a brother inChrist. I must confess this booklet has brought completetransformation to my life, and through the help of the HolySpirit I am beginning to live a Christ-like life.” —E.M., Ghana

For 27 years WMP provided limited sup-

plies of the Reina-Valera 1960 SpanishNew Testament (including a 38-page BasicStudy of New Testament Scriptures com-

piled by Watson Goodman) free of charge

in areas where New Testaments were not

easily available or affordable. This

WMP New Testament has been out of print for some

time and could not be reprinted, as we were not able in

2010 to negotiate an acceptable renewal agreement with the

copyright-holder through the American Bible Society.

That same year the Reina-Valera Gomez 2010 SpanishBible became available. (This revised edition is not to be

confused with the much-criticized 2004 draft, made avail-

able for public review.) Not only is this translation more in

line with WMP policy of using KJV and NKJV in English,

but it can be reproduced free of charge by those who do not

sell them. (In the past, we had paid up to 7.7% of our pro-

duction costs in royalties.)

At this time we do not intend to change the version used

for years in our Spanish Scripture booklets and Bible stud-

ies, since WMP received unlimited permission to do so,

with the only proviso specifying where to send sample

copies of any new booklet produced using that version.

Co-founder Watson Goodman(left) was president of World

Missionary Press for more than 25years. Edwin Messerschmidt(right), in previous years a WMPBoard director, became interimpresident on March 1, 1987, and

served until Jay Benson was appointed by the Board as president inMay, 1988. Early in the morning of June 15, 2012, Edwin woke up inHeaven. He was 94. (Watson Goodman preceded him in 2002.)

Edwin came to Christ through reading a pocket Gospel of John.He knew first-hand the power of the written Word of God to transforma life. Over the years he and his wife Ruth were personally involvedin missions, and through his Great Commission Foundation sup-ported numerous literature projects.

On June 11, Jay e-mailed Edwin, “I believe that today is your 76thspiritual birthday! Congratulations on your faithfulness in walking withthe Lord. What a spiritual pilgrimage you have made! May God con-tinue to bless you with a very real sense of His presence and love.Your friend in Christ.” Two days later, Edwin responded, “Thank you,Jay, for reminding me of my Spiritual birthday. As I reflect on what atransformation the Lord Jesus made in my life, that has not dimin-ished one iota in my life, but I trust has grown! I rejoice with you all forhow the Lord is using WMP to feed and minister to the hungry world-wide. Awaiting our Lord’s soon return. Edwin.”
