Hello Wolf Parents! PACK CAMP OUT

The pack is

camping out

November 9-

11 on the

camping

grounds at the

church. The

theme they are

having this

year is Astronomy! The Chair of this event

is working to get a professor to come out

with some high speed telescopes to help

us locate planets and constellations. If I

am correct we are also Scouting for food

that weekend since the whole pack is

together. I do not have to much more

information on this event, but at the

least wanted to put the dates out there

for you to start making arrangements.

If you have any questions or concerns

about this event, please email me and ill

Volume 1, Issue 1

My name is Michelle Mims and I am

one of the Wolf Den Leaders for

Pack 111. Most parents have met

me before, but last night we

welcomed three new Scouts into

our Den, so I thought I would

reintroduce myself.

This is our second year in scouting.

Our first year started when my son

Brandon was a Tiger and I was the

Cub Master of our last Pack in

Baumholder, Germany. We very

much enjoyed the community and

learning opportunities scouting

offered so when we moved to Fort

Sill in May we continued our

scouting trail with Pack 111.

My husband is a Drill Sergeant at

Fort Sill and works extended hours,

so a lot of the time you'll just see

me wrangling three boys, trying to

hang onto any bit of sanity I have

left.

I really am excited to work with all

the boys this year and together

grow in our knowledge of

community and service.

Please is you have any questions or

concerns, feel free to approach me

at the beginning or end of our

meetings. Also please feel free to

call or email me.

Welcome to the Wolf Den!

What is my Wolf doing in the den?

How can I help at home?

The purpose of scouting is to build character, learn citizenship and to develop

personal fitness. We do all of this while having a ton of fun!

For Pack 111 the Wolf Den meetings are on Mondays at 7:00 pm in the gym-

nasium of the Holy Family Catholic Church.

The LAST Monday of each month is the Pack meeting. The pack meeting is

where all of the Dens come together for learning opportunities, announce-

ments, advancements and awards. The pack meeting also starts at 7:00 pm.

At the Den meetings the boys are suppose to wear their class B uniform, which

is the pack t-shirt and jeans or shorts.

At the Pack meetings and pack outing's such as popcorn selling, the boys are

to wear their class A uniforms which is the navy blue shirt, neckerchief, slide

and wolf hat. These items can be purchased at the Scout hut. At the hut they

also sew on the patches for a reasonable price. The address as well as a pic-

tures of the uniform are on the last page of this news letter.

Okay, so you know the meeting dates, attire and now onto advancements.

Before your Scout can start earning any kind of awards, he MUST earn his Bob-

cat. To earn his bobcat he must be able to tell me the following things:

-The Cub Scout Promise

-The Law of the Pack

-The Cub Scout Sign (what it means, why we do it)

-The Cub Scout Handshake

-The Cub Scout Motto

-The Cub Scout Salute (what is means, why we do it)

-What WeBELOS means

Once your scout can tell me all these things we can submit for him to be

pinned at the following pack meeting.

We do practice these in the den, but it helps scouts to learn more quickly if

they practice at home with Mom or Dad without the distraction of the other

Scouts in the Den.

While your scout is learning the basics he will also work with the den on

Achievements in our Wolf Handbook. We do these achievements to work to-

wards getting our Wolf Badge in February. A lot of the requirements we will do

at our meetings but there are something's that will need to be done at home. I

will announce those requirements in the section of our newsletter,” How can I

help at home”.

There are belt loops, pins and arrows for the boys to earn, but first lets concen-

trate on our bobcat.

At our first meeting I had the boys set the

rules for our Den.

We take these rules very seriously for the

protection of your Scout and others.

Volume 1, Issue 1

New to Scouting?

The Wolf Den has been hard at work!

We have been jumping around the book quiet a bit as I try to match up

achievements that are on the same topic.

So far we have covered:

1) Feats of Skill. In this chapter the boys got a little exercise in testing their

speed, balance and strength.

2) Your Flag. In this Chapter we learned that the United States flag stands for

our country. We learned about the Oklahoma state flag and how it came

to be. We also talked about ways to honor our flag.

3) Keep Your Body Healthy. In this chapter we learned what to do to be

healthy. Keep active and strong. We talked about oral hygiene, about

washing our hands and how to stay fit.

4) Know your home and community. In this chapter the boys learned ways to

be responsible at home and what to know incase of an emergency.

5) Tools for Fixing and Building. This was a hard one for me because I am not

very handy, but with the help of some Dads in the Den we got it done. As a

group we identified tools and how to use them. A bird house was sent

home as a project to do with the family or friend.

6) Start a collection. We talked about how its fun to collect items, and how to

stay encouraged when trying to start a collection.

7) HAVE NOT COMPLETED

8) Cooking and Eating. In this chapter we talked about the Food Guide Pyra-

mid. We talked about servings and how many of each food group we

should have a day. We played a food identification game.

Scouting Awareness Leave No Trace Award.

We started this award with the Tiger Den last night, 1 October.

We spoke with the boys about planning ahead, sticking to the

trails, managing our family pets while out, leaving the trails the

way we find them, respecting other visitors and trashing our

trash. After we had our talk with the boys, we went out on the church grounds

and picked up small litter that we found. The boys also drew pictures of what it

means to leave no trace that will be displayed at our next pack meeting.

We still have two more outing to pick up litter, and to complete achievement 7

in our handbook. Once those things are complete, the boys will take the, Leave

No Trace Pledge and hopefully be awarded at the November Pack meeting.

Progress Toward Ranks:

When a scout completes any three achievements, his den leader

can presented the Progress towards ranks emblem to him. It’s a

diamond with a plastic thong, and its worn on the button of the right

pocket of his uniform. Each time he completes three achievements

he will receive another gold bead. After his fourth gold bead, he will

be ready to receive his Wolf Badge.

There are a few things that I am waiting to see from home before I can put in

for achievement beads for the boys.

Achievement 4:

The boys are suppose to make a list of phone numbers to have incase of an

emergency.

The boys are suppose to track their household duties for a month.

The boys are suppose to visit an important place in the community.

Achievement 5:

The boys were suppose to make the bird house or locker they brought home.

Achievement 6:

The boys are suppose to make a collection of 10 things and display them nice-

ly. . Bring them into the den and talk to us about them. (it can be anything,

rocks, marbles, bugs)

Achievement 8:

The boys are suppose to help their parents plan a meal.

They are suppose to help fix at least one meal. Help set the table and wash the

dishes.

They are to fix their own breakfast.

They are also to help an adult plan and prepare an outdoor meal.

When your scout has completed the above items, please sign his book or

shoot me an email and I will log it in my books to send up for advancement.

Volume 1, Issue 1

How can I help at home?

I am very pleased to announce that our Den

is 20 Scouts Strong and it continues to

grow! Right now, we are the LARGEST den

in the pack!

Since 20 boys is more than one

person can handle, we will be

splitting the den. Now what does that

mean for your Scout?

Well Akela Shayla, who originally

signed on as my assistant, will be

leading Wolf Den 2.

We will be starting Den meetings as

one large group and later in the

meeting split off into Den 1 and Den

2 for activities. This will better ensure your

Scout has proper supervision and that he

gets the most out of his time with the Den.

The Den is BIG!!!
