    INTRODUCTION

    The Mauritian population is 1.7 million out of which52% of it are women

    Man although being lesser than women do occupymost seats in assembly.

    Only 5.6% of women are in our national assembly upto 2005

    Mauritius is considered to be the lowest ranking

    among the SADC countries Women are considered to be the secondary members

    of society

    EVOLUTION OF WOMEN INMAURITIUS

    Women long ago were considered as a weakervessel.

    They did not have access to education

    They used to remain at home and do thehousehold chores while men was evolving

    They did not have the right to vote either

    There are in all 100 seats in our National Assembly

    - 62 seats for the First Past the Post

    - 8 seats for the Best Loser

    - 30 seats for Proportional representation There are in all 20 constituents in Mauritius and one in

    rodrigues each consisting of 3 deputees

    Out of the 100 seats only 13 seats are for the womenwhich makes only 10% of women of the totalpopulation

    Number of politician women inmauritius

    In 2010 mauritius went through election with a target of30% at first and then it increase to 50% by 2015

    Mauritius counts only 10% of women population in politics

    After election 2005 the representation came from 5.6% to17% however mauritius is among the lowest inrepresentation of women among SADC

    WHY SHOULD THERE BEWOMEN IN POLITICS

    To increase women representation in the NationalAssembly and is necessary to achieve gender parity

    The terms 'democracy' demands that there should beparity of representation; whereby women should begiven some positions of power

    Efficient use of human resources

    Women are more aware of the children's

    problem,family problems thus they can tackle it moreefficiently compared to men

    Having both genders would imply the yielding ofdifferent ideas values styles and behaviors

    However today women are being more sensitisedabout their place in society, in public sector 30%of woman are at head although being in special

    ministries. Although the participation of woman is

    still very low but still Mauritius is encouragingwomen to participate
