As the Women’s Business Conference enters its third decade, we are proud that this has become the premiere women’s business event in the region. We want this to be an event that reverberates all year long.

We do this by working hard to foster a sense of celebration, connection, empowerment and engagement – through our programming and speakers, and by recognizing ATHENA® and YPL ATHENA® Award winners who embody these characteristics.

This year we’ve captured the spirit of Athena in our theme, “Heroic Endeavors, Everyday Lives.” The Greek goddess of wisdom, Athena was a master strategist with a calm temperament who fought for just reasons and created art with her hands and through her spirit in all that she accomplished.

We celebrate the “Athena” in each of you, whether in the board room or the corner cubicle; in the spotlight or behind the scenes; in established companies or brave startups. Your heroic endeavor is what connects you and drives you. It’s what sets you apart and defines you. It’s what calls to you each day, and how you respond throughout life.

Judy A. Smith is the Founder and President of Smith & Company, a leading strategic advisory firm with o�ces in Washington D.C., Los Angeles, and New York. Over the past 25 years, Ms. Smith has brought her unique combination of communication skills, media savvy, and legal and political acumen to clients facing a wide array of issues and challenges throughout the United States and abroad.

As a result of her wide-ranging and groundbreaking career, Shonda Rhimes, creator of ABC’s hit television dramas “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Private Practice,” developed a television drama about the world of crisis management inspired by Ms. Smith. The series entitled, “Scandal,” revolves around the life and work of a professional fixer. Ms. Smith serves as Co-Executive Producer of the project, and provides insight and technical expertise on crisis management issues.

Ms. Smith honed her skills through her experiences during some of the most historic events of our time, including the General Petraeus scandal, the Iran Contra investigation, the President Clinton scandal, and the congressional inquiry of Enron. She has also served as a counselor to Fortune 500 corporations such as Sony, BellSouth, Nextel, Union Pacific, and Wal-Mart on a variety of corporate and public relations matters.

Perhaps best known in media circles for her expertise as a crisis management advisor, Ms. Smith has served as a consultant for a host of high-profile, celebrity, and entertainment clients over the course of her career. Clients have included Monica Lewinsky, Senator Craig from Idaho, Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., actor Wesley Snipes, NFL quarterback Michael Vick, celebrity chef Paula Deen, and the family of Chandra Levy.

Ms. Smith has been featured in numerous national publications including: the Washington Post, National Journal, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Fortune, Fast Company and writes on current events for The Hu�ngton Post and The Daily Beast. Ms. Smith is an experienced and sought after commentator as a crisis management expert. She frequently appears on major television networks such as CNN, MSNBC, FOX News, NBC, ABC, and CBS to o�er commentary on topical issues of the day. Ms. Smith also lectures on crisis management before corporate boards, academic institutions, and other professional groups.

LACY DURHAMLacy is a Tax Manager at Deloitte Tax, LLP, where she focuses primarily on Employee Benefits, Executive Compensation, and Tax. Lacy specializes in advising clients on all aspects of employee benefit plans and compensation arrangements,with an emphasis on plan compliance, corrective measures, administration, and mitigation strategies. With 12 years of experience, she is routinely involved in drafting and providing opinions, interpreting legislation and regulations, andworking with complex and sensitive financial matters.

Service is of the highest importance to Lacy. She is a zealous advocate of advancing women, and promoting diversity and inclusion in her profession. An ally of women, children, and disadvantaged persons who otherwise have no voice, Lacy speaks on issues around abuse/neglect, human tra�cking, education reform, and youth empowerment/mentorship. She currently leads Deloitte’s Young Professional Group and is an active member of many professional organizations. Most notably, Lacy is the immediate Past Chair of the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division, the largest association of its kind in the world, in which she represented the voice of 170,000 young lawyers.

Lacy earned degrees in accounting, finance, an MBA, JD, and a LL.M. in taxation. She is admitted to practice law in Louisiana and Texas, and she is a certified mediator.

Hilda Galvan is a nationally recognized trial lawyer who focuses on complex intellectual property litigation, representing technology companies in courts across the country and across borders. She is Partner-in-Charge of the Dallas O�ce of Jones Day, an international law firm with more than 2,500 lawyers across five continents. Hilda has also served on the firm's Advisory Committee for a decade. With a high priority on community service, Hilda is Chair of the Board of the Dallas Regional Chamber, is a Trustee for the University of Texas School of Law, and serves on the boards of a number of nonprofit organizations that support women and children, health care, and education. Hilda received an electrical engineering degree from the University of Texas at El Paso and worked in the telecommunications sector prior to attending law school at the University of Texas in Austin.

LAYSHA WARDEXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & CHIEF EXTERNAL ENGAGEMENT OFFICER, TARGET

Laysha Ward is Executive Vice President and Chief External Engagement O�cer for Target, and a member of the company’s executive leadership team. She heads Target’s enterprise-wide approach to actively engage and deepen relationships with external stakeholders to drive positive business and community impact. Laysha is a member of the Executive Leadership Council; Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority; The Links, an international women’s service organization; the International Women’s Forum; and the Advisory Board for the Aspen Institute Latinos and Society Program. She also sits on the for-profit Board of Directors for Denny’s Corporation. Laysha holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Indiana University and a master’s degree in social services administration with an emphasis in management and public policy from the University of Chicago.

THE HONORABLE JEANNE L. PHILLIPSSENIOR VICE PRESIDENT FOR CORPORATE AFFAIRS AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS, HUNT CONSOLIDATED, INC.

Ambassador Phillips is Senior Vice President of Corporate A�airs and International Relations for Hunt Consolidated, Inc. She also serves as president of Hunt Global Partnerships, Hunt Oil Company's corporate social responsibility program that creates partnerships to produce sustainable projects that enhance the quality of life of the residents and communities where Hunt operates. Appointed by President George W. Bush as the United States Permanent Representative and Ambassador to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris, France, Ambassador Phillips led the U.S. Mission OECD from August 2001 until June 2003. She also served as Executive Director of the 54th and then Chairman of the 55th Presidential Inaugural Committees.

Beth Garvey joined the BG Sta�ng team through the company's acquisition of InSta� in 2013. Starting at InSta� in 1998 as Director of Human Resources, Beth quickly rose through the ranks – serving as Director of Operations, VP of Operations, Senior VP of Operations, COO, and ultimately, CEO upon acquisition. She was Division President of two BG Sta�ng divisions until her 2016 promotion to Chief Operating O�cer of BG Sta�ng, Inc., overseeing all four sta�ng divisions: commercial, IT, finance/accounting, and multifamily. Beth is on the Dallas Regional Chamber’s Board of Advisors and serves as President of the DRC’s Executive Women's Roundtable. In 2016, D CEO listed Garvey as one of the top Dallas 500 Business Leaders, and in 2010, she was named a Dallas Business Journal 'Women in Business' honoree.

SARAH CARABIAS-RUSHVICE PRESIDENT ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, DALLAS REGIONAL CHAMBER

Sarah Carabias-Rush has worked at the Dallas Regional Chamber since 2003, with increasing responsibility in economic development, technology and health care industry programming, and international business recruitment. She led the recruitment of major corporate headquarters to the Dallas Region, including Toyota Motor North America, ACTIVE Network, Hilti, Omnitracs, and Kubota. In addition, she played a key role in recruiting operations for Panasonic, Hexaware Technologies, Liberty Mutual, Kohl’s, and other well-known organizations to the region. Sarah earned a Bachelor of Arts in international studies, sociology, and Spanish from Austin College. She and her husband became proud parents in August 2015.

GABRIELLE MADISONDIRECTOR, COMMUNITY RELATIONS, THOMSON REUTERS

Gabrielle Madison is responsible for community and educational partnerships for U.S.-based locations of Thomson Reuters, working with civic and charitable organizations to develop strategies that make an impact and build brand awareness. Gabrielle has a passion for giving back and has held various leadership roles with the Jackie Robinson Foundation, which helps provides scholarship and career opportunities for young adults; the American Heart Association; and serves at her church. In 2017, she was tabbed a “40 under 40” by the Dallas Business Journal. Gabrielle graduated from Baylor University with a Bachelor of Business Administration in marketing and has two children.

Since beginning her work with Rodan + Fields in November 2011, Christy Nutter has achieved R+F’s highest title, becoming a RFX Circle Achiever & Lexus Earner. She served on the 2016 R+F Voices of the Field: Global Expansion Committee; 2015 R+F Voices of the Field: Recognition Committee; and 2014 Leadership Advisory Board. Christy is passionate about empowering women and currently leads a team of thousands across the U.S. and Canada. Prior to joining R+F, she worked in PR for Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children and for The Home Depot at The Richards Group. The proud Texas Aggie and her husband Tim have two children, Hudson and Bennett.

Melissa Marks Garner is a licensed professional counselor, board-certified art therapist, certified yoga instructor, and full-time corporate wellness consultant. Since 2005, she has provided hundreds of meditation sessions to a broad range of clients, including business professionals, health care professionals, and cancer survivors. She loves sharing both the evidence-based benefits behind mindfulness as well as providing experiential guided exercises for her clients.

Hattie Hill is an international leadership development expert, business owner, best-selling author, and world-renowned thought leader. As President and CEO of WFF, Hattie works to advance women in the food industry. Prior to WFF, she served as CEO of Hattie Hill Enterprises, Inc., a global management, human relations, and leadership development firm that provided leadership development for thousands of senior leaders at numerous Fortune 500 companies and major organizations throughout the world.

SARA MADSEN MILLERCHIEF OPERATING OFFICER AND CO-OWNER, 1820 PRODUCTIONS

Sara Madsen Miller is the Chief Operating O�cer and Co-Owner of 1820 Productions, an Emmy Award-winning digital marketing production company that helps brands move the needle through the creation of images that move people. Prior to 1820, Sara served in an executive leadership role with Pfizer Inc. Her community involvement includes, but is not limited to, service as a Board Member for the Cotton Bowl Classic and Dallas Regional Chamber, and Chair of the DRC’s Leadership Committee.

ANNA TRENTEVENT HOST

Anna Trent has served as a facilitator for some of the most well-known personalities and brands for more than 10 years. As emcee for Women of Faith, she traveled to 50 cities, hosting more than 350,000 women in the process. A Dove Award-winning producer, Anna has helped cultivate the careers acclaimed Inspirational singers, speakers, and authors, including Sandi Patty. Anna, her husband Collin, and their two kids live in Indianapolis.

As Senior Vice President of Human Resources and Chief Diversity O�cer at AT&T, Cynthia Marshall is responsible for identifying and developing leaders, aligning employees with the company’s vision and priorities, overseeing major business unit HR support, and employee engagement. She also leads AT&T’s diversity and inclusion e�orts as well as the company’s EEO and a�rmative action policies.

Cynthia has previously served as Senior Vice President of Human Resources and as President of AT&T North Carolina, where she oversaw the company’s regulatory, legislative, and community a�airs activities in the state. In this role, Cynthia became the first African-American Chair of the North Carolina State Chamber of Commerce. Her career begin at Pacific Bell in 1981, and over the years, Cynthia has held management positions in operations, human resources, network engineering and planning, and regulatory/external a�airs.

Widely recognized for her visionary leadership, Cynthia has received numerous accolades including Ebony magazine’s 2016 “Power 100” list, Black Enterprise magazine’s “50 Most Powerful Women in Corporate America” in 2015, and in 2014, industry analysts and members of the press conferred on her the HR Executive of the Year - Best in Biz Award. Cynthia received the prestigious Leadership North Carolina Governor’s Award in 2013, which honors just one citizen each year for lifetime achievements.

Cynthia has a passion for young people and education, serving with the Joint Legislative Commission on Dropout Prevention and High School Graduation, Dallas CASA, and the Executive Leadership Council – whose mission is to increase the number of successful black executives globally.

A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, Cynthia holds degrees in business administration and human resources management. Additionally, she’s received honorary doctorates from Livingstone College and Bennett College. The Richmond, California, native and her husband, Kenneth Marshall, have three children.

By celebrating exceptional leaders, the ATHENA® Leadership Award Program seeks to inspire others to achieve excellence in their professional and personal lives.

Latina media dynamo and women’s empowerment advocate Nely Galán, dubbed the “Tropical Tycoon” by The

New York Times Magazine, is one of the entertainment industry’s savviest firebrand talents. An immigrant and self-made media mogul, Ms. Galán was the first Latina President of Entertainment for a U.S. television network (Telemundo). She is an Emmy Award-winning producer of more than 600 episodes of television in Spanish and English, including the FOX hit reality series “The Swan.”

After becoming self-made, Ms. Galán has made it her mission to teach women — regardless of age or background — how they, too, can become entrepreneurs. Her book, “SELF MADE: Becoming Empowered, Self-Reliant, and Rich in Every Way,” was published by Spiegel & Grau/Random House in 2016. Inspired by the new revolution in women’s entrepreneurship led by multicultural women, Ms. Galán wrote the book as a manifesto to ignite the SELF MADE movement, uniting all women on a quest for an economic future they control.

SELF MADE is a blueprint, a mindset, and a movement, but most of all, it is a call to rise up and take ownership in ways big and small. You do not have to look up the ladder to find the self-made woman — you simply have to look around; she is everywhere. From the part-time Lyft driver, to the Etsy store owner, to the unrelenting startup CEO, the one thing all of these women have in common is that they are becoming self-made. SELF MADE is for every woman with untapped greatness in her, who just needs the tools to get started.

Ms. Galán is also the founder of the nonprofit The Adelante Movement (“Move it forward!” in Spanish), which seeks to train and empower Latinas to become entrepreneurs. Women of all backgrounds, not just Latinas, began showing up to her events, a clear signal to Ms. Galán that all women, and particularly multicultural women, were leading a new economic women’s movement. The revolution around financial self-reliance had already begun. The SELF MADE book is the culmination of nearly four years on the road meeting and training women, who have collectively become the largest growth engine in the country.
