From 2004 to 2007, I served as the Long Island District Chair for Team Matches and from 2007 until 2010, I assumed the responsibilities of Site Selection Chair. As I write this message, I am 3 months into my Presidency and it is astounding how much we have already accom- plished. I would like to begin by saying thanks to the other members of the Board for being so forthcoming and fabulous to work with. They are Phyllis Gusick, Beth Lankler, Barbara Klestadt, Mary Anne Kelly, Tara Fleming, Teresa Egan, Diane Mock, Sarah Greenhill, Mi- chele Greenfield, Carol Steadman, Heidi Komoriya, Ellen Asnis, Lori Ann Cerullo, Donna McHugh, Dale Kramer and Kathy Flicker. Much has changed in the WMGA office, goodbyes were said to Nancy Early, who retired, but Sarah Relyea was promoted to the position of Director of Operations and John Ratta is now our Tournament Manager. We are thrilled to have them assume these new roles. There are many wonderful new ideas coming from your Board members including the introduction of a “B” Player of the Year [POY] award with guidelines similar to the “A” POY. It seems only right to challenge and honor our class B players. A vote will be conducted at the Met Rep meetings in April to amend our Constitution and Bylaws so that we may create a new classification of membership: the Independent Membership. By now, you will have already received an email with the particulars of this exciting initiative which we hope will further our mission to promote growth. The Board and staff is working hard, but we always need your help and support. Please consider vol- unteering! Whether it is serving as a Met Rep, Team Captain, Series Captain, coming out to a nearby tournament, or assisting at one of our Girls to the Tee clinics, your help is always welcome! And, more importantly, I encourage you to sign up and PLAY in our events. We are more than just Team Matches. I will be crossing my fingers for some great weather for our upcoming team matches. Enjoy and play well. Cheryl Brayman President 2017 WMGA Board of Directors

Please consider vol-unteering! Teresa Egan, Vice President of CompetitionsTeresa grew up in Jersey City and received her BS in Accounting from Kean University.

She worked for several years for the General Motors Corporation before leaving to start a family. Teresa has been married to Bill for 34 years and they have three grown children: Conor, Matthew and Molly. Teresa has been a member of the Spring Lake Golf Club for over 20 years. She has served as the 18 Hole Chair and has participated on the Membership and Golf Utilization committees. Teresa first became involved with the WMGA as the Captain for their newly formed second team. She has also served as a Series Captain for the last four

years. When not golfing, which her husband might argue she does everyday, Teresa is active in her com-munity of Avon-by-the-Sea. She serves on the Planning Board, delivers Meals on Wheels and has coached recreational basketball. Teresa is looking forward to serving on the WMGA Board.

Tara Fleming, Team Competitions ChairCurrently a resident of Jersey City, NJ and a member of New Jersey National GC, Tara

was a member of the University of New Mexico Women’s golf team, graduated with a Bachelors of Business Administration and then pursued a career as a professional golf-er. She qualified for the LPGA on her second attempt, played in four USGA Women’s Open Championships and had a career high finish of 10th at the Corning Classic. She retired from competitive golf in 1996, began a career in the financial services industry and is currently a Director with Alvarez and Marsal. As a reinstated amateur, Tara enjoys competing at the

local, regional and national level. Her greatest golfing accomplishment to date was serving as the playing captain of Team New Jersey in their win of the USGA State Team Championship in 2013 with Alice Chen and Cindy Ha. Tara can be found at New Jersey National each weekend teeing it up with her golf “family”. She welcomes the opportunity to serve on the WMGA board and to promote the game that she loves to woman of all ages and skill levels.

Kathy Flicker, District Captain NJ Team MatchesKathy lives in Skillman, NJ with her husband Mike Rosenberg, and is relatively new to

golf, having started later in life. As a young woman, Kathy was a competitive springboard diver, and among other titles, was the NJ State champion 13 times. Kathy earned a law degree and spent her entire professional career as a prosecutor, becoming the first female Director of the Division of Criminal Justice in the Attorney General’s Office for the State of New Jersey. Before holding that position, she was a trial attorney, prosecuting numerous note-worthy cases, including the murder of 7-year-old Megan Kanka, the case that ulti-

mately gave us Megan’s Laws. Golf became a part of Kathy’s life toward the end of her full-time legal career when she joined Cherry Valley CC in Skillman. She and her son, Scott, took up the game at around the same time. Scott, however, has become slightly more accomplished as he has won their Club Championship. Kathy has headed the Ladies Golf Committee at CVCC for many years and, in 2016, became the first female Chairman of the Board of Governors for CVCC.

Ellen Asnis, Initiatives ChairEllen was encouraged to learn how to play golf by her husband, Scott when they moved

to Lake Success in New York with their two young sons, Marc and Alex. Golf quickly became Ellen’s “happy place.” She has been a long time participant in the WMGA Interclub team matches, playing for the Lake Success Golf Club and serving as their Captain. Ellen is very proud that her team will be playing in Series One this spring. Ellen is currently the reigning Ladies Club Champion and has also enjoyed victory with Scott in the Husband and Wife Championships. Ellen has a BA from Ithaca College and received paralegal certification at

Adelphi University. She worked for the NYS Attorney General’s Office as well as in private practices special-izing in litigation and corporate law. Presently, she is assisting her husband, the Founder & CEO of Dental365, a new and expanding dental service organization. Ellen and Scott are also members of Sands Point Golf Club in NY and Olde Florida Golf Club in Naples, FL. She is honored to be on the WMGA Board of Directors.

Lori Ann Cerullo, District Captain - Westchester/CT Team MatchesLori Ann currently resides in Rye, NY and is a member at Rye Golf Club. A true New York-

er, she was born in Mount Vernon, moved to Armonk, and then attended SUNY at Albany obtaining a B.S. in Biology with minors in Psychology, Chemistry and Computer Science. She joined IBM in Poughkeepsie, but it was her transfer to IBM sales in New York City that had her utilize her golf game to bond with clients. Both her career and golf game were suc-cessful; she retired a few years ago as a VP of Sales. Lori Ann is not one to sit idle, however, and has many interests including professional organizing, time management coaching,

home staging and a passion for canines. Not only does she volunteer for the SPCA, fostering puppies, she also works at the Simpson Animal Clinic preparing the animals for surgery, and socializes service dogs in training with Puppies Behind Bars so that they become either explosive detection canines or working dogs for PTS veterans. When not golfing, she loves spending time with her husband, traveling and cooking. As a previous Series Captain, Lori Ann is looking forward to her new leadership role as District Captain.

2017: Year of the “B”Introducing the “B” Player of the Year

As the WMGA is committed to fostering the game of golf for all of our members, we are pleased to announce that in 2017, we will be introducing a “B” Player of the Year Award. Our “B” golfers represent a larger proportion of the WMGA membership, so it is time for one of these players to have the opportunity to be recognized as the elite golfer of her division.

To enhance this contest, the WMGA is adding a “B” Match Play Championship which will be recognized as a major competition in conjunction with the “B” Stroke Play Championship. Points earned will be weighted to reflect the significance of these events.

A player must have a USGA handicap index above 14.1 as of the final revision date (November 1) of the prior year to be considered for this award. As this recognition is based upon a player’s season long performance, there is the potential that her handicap may improve over the course of the year. To account for this possi-bility, the player’s handicap must also meet eligibility requirements on the day of play for pointing earning competitions.

Eligibility also requires that players compete in at least four (4) WMGA events during a season, one of which must be either the Stroke Play “B” or Match Play “B” Championship. Additional POY points can be earned by competing in the “B” Senior Championship, the three “B” One Day Events (LI, NJ, WCT), the USGA Wom-en’s Senior Amateur, the USGA Women’s Four-Ball and certain regional events. A complete listing of tour-naments and their corresponding point distribution will be housed on the WMGA website. Unlike the “A” Championships, all “B” events will permit players the use of golf carts.

This recognition is long overdue and the WMGA is truly excited to add the “B” Player of the Year Award and the “B” Match Play Championship. We look forward to your continued support of our events and the additional enthusiasm this recognition is expected to bring. There is only one “First” Player of the Year “B” winner. Will it be you?

Sister/Brother Low Net Trophy

Wanted: More trophies... please

First and foremost, we would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Linda Greene and her brother Marc Wein for their generous trophy do-nation to be shared by other future Sister/Brother Low Net Champions. It’s wonderful and inspiring! However, with the establishment of our new “B” POY honor and “B” Match Play Championship, we now need two more trophies. If anyone is interested in donating and having the honor of this recog-nition, please contact Sarah in the office.

Be prepared to qualify and support our team

Nobody WANTS their team to play short . . . but life happens. As team captains, we work so hard to prepare our rosters. But, unfortunately, even the best laid plans can go awry. So what can you do? First, as stated in the TSB (p. 23 #7): “Each player must be present and ready to tee off at her scheduled time, with the intent to complete the round.” Meaning, please do not have an injured player come to a team match for the purpose of teeing off and then forfeiting to “take a spot.” We really feel that this is in contrast to the spirit of team matches, as we want everyone who shows up to be able to play her match. While we know it can be challenging, please try and have alternates “on call” until the morning of the match. We appreciate that team matches require a great deal of commitment, but out of respect for all the players who have gone to great lengths to be there, please do your best to minimize “playing short.”

Do you want to be a star? Go to USGA.org to apply for local qualifiers:

Griscom CupOn May 31st and June 1st, the WMGA will be hosting the 114th annual Griscom Cup at the beautiful Country Club of Fairfield! This historic tournament challenges the Women’s Metropolitan Golf Association, against the Women’s Golf Association of Philadelphia, and the Wom-en’s Golf Association of Massachusetts. It is always one of the most highly anticipated tournaments of the year with the most skilled play-ers within their represented regions competing for team victory. For a tournament like the Griscom Cup only the best country clubs will do, and the CC of Fairfield certainly fits the part. Located along the Long Island Sound, the links style course, built on a property originally con-sisting of onion fields, was designed by Seth Raynor and then touched up by Robert Trent Jones and A.W. Tillinghast.

Tara Fleming, Team Competitions Chair, will serve as Captain, and she is very motivated to capture the win, which would mark our second Griscom Cup victory in three years after our last “W” in 2015. This tournament is always special for the WMGA but, in hosting years, it carries even more importance. For these reasons, we would like to encourage members more than ever to come out, volunteer and give them a great home field advantage! Please email our Tournament Manager, John Ratta, at [email protected] if you are interested in helping. We hope to see you there and good luck to all those participating!
