COMMENTARY

Last year’s commentary showed a history of the Women’s Six Nations that could be divided into three

distinct periods.

The first period covered the first four years of the competition – from 2002 to 2005 – when the

tournament was dominated by France. They won the tournament three times and won 18 of their 20

matches.

This was then followed by a period of domination by England who won the tournament every year from

2006 to 2012, winning 34 of their 35 matches.

The third period covered the last three years – 2012 to 2014 – when the competition was won by three

different teams in England, Ireland and France. At the top level, it had therefore become more

competitive with both France and England losing three matches and Ireland losing four over the three-

year period. Of the 10 matches lost by the three teams, nine were to each other, the only exception

being France’s loss to Italy in 2013.

Such results reflected a tournament that was now being dominated by three teams, a feature graphically

illustrated in the 2014 competition.

In the nine matches played by France, England and Ireland against Italy, Wales and

Scotland, the total points scored by the first group was 359 compared to nine by the second.

In those same nine matches, the try count was 56-0. Not a single try was scored by the

second group of teams against any of France, England and Ireland.

With such a demarcation between two groups of teams in one competition and with success in a number of matches all but guaranteed, the eventual standings in any championship are likely to be dependent on the results of a small limited number of matches. The 2015 Championship, won by Ireland on point differential from France, saw a measurable change. Italy finished in third place and two matches were won by lower ranking teams when Wales beat England and Italy beat France. Furthermore, while scoring differentials in matches between the two groups of teams remained high, in aggregate, they were not as extreme.

In 2014, the total points scored by the first group was 359 compared to nine by the second group – in 2015, the comparable figures were 291 to 60.

In 2014, the try count of the two groups was 56-0 with not a single try being scored by the

second group of teams against any of France, England and Ireland. In 2015, the comparable

figures were 44-8.

There is a caveat, however. In this year’s competition, the playing squads of both England and France were not the strongest available to each country. A combination of factors, including leading players concentrating on the sevens circuit, meant that comparatively few of England and France’s Women’s Rugby World Cup 2014 squads played in the Six Nations. Of the England squad of 22 that played in the WRWC 2014 final, only nine were in the squad that played against Wales, seven in the squads that played against France, Ireland and Italy, and six in the squad that faced Scotland. France’s squads also saw changes. In each of their five matches, only 11 featured in their squad for their final match at WRWC 2014.

For a more robust evaluation of the relative strengths of the six participating teams, therefore, this can only be made when all six teams pick their strongest squads. What does remain clear, however, are the problems continuing to face Scotland. Scotland lost all five matches again this year, scoring 27 points and conceding 227. Over the last five years they have failed to win a single game, losing all 25 matches, while scoring 67 points and conceding 1,061 – and although five tries were scored in 2011 and 2012, only three tries have been scored in the last three years during which time 110 tries have been conceded.
