Jenna Ness became the 12th head coach in Loras history in May of 2013 and is set to begin her second season at the helm in the fall of 2014.

A 2011 graduate of Luther College, Ness earned degrees in business management and exercise science. While at Luther, Ness was a two-sport student-athlete, competing in volleyball and track & field. She helped the Norse qualify for their first appearance in the NCAA Division III Women’s Volleyball Tournament in 2009, finishing with a 26-12 record. Luther received an at-large bid into the tournament and advanced to the second round before falling to University of St. Thomas.

Ness suffered a season-ending injury in the fall of 2010 and as a result, began her coaching career while as a student. Upon her graduation in January of 2011, Ness became the interim head coach at Luther through May. For her efforts with Luther, Ness was the recipient of the AVCA “Coaches 4 Coaches” award.

Ness was hired as the assistant men’s and women’s volleyball coach at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa. In 2012, the men went 33-3 and finished as the runners-up in the NAIA National Tournament for the second straight season. St. Ambrose was the home to the national player of the year and two all-americans, all three of which Ness coached. On the women’s side, the Bees finished third in their conference with a 25-14 overall recored and ranked in the top 30 at the end of the season and had three student-athletes selected for all-conference honors.

The 2012-13 season saw Ness relocate to Winona, Minnesota where she became the top assistant coach, recruiting coordinator, intramural director and Student Athletic Advisory Committee Representative for St. Mary’s University. While at St. Mary’s, the Cardinals finished 14-14 and earned one all-conference selection.

In May of 2013, Ness completed her Master’s Degree in Organizational Leadership at St. Ambrose.

In her first season at Loras, Ness led the Duhawks to a 15-17 record and a third place finish in the Iowa Conference. Loras advanced to the conference tournament championship before falling to second-seeded Coe. Three Duhawks were named to all-conference, including Tara Blake’s first team selection.

A native of Urbandale, Iowa, Ness now resides in Dubuque.

HEAD COACH JENNA NESSLORAS WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Sophia Brown enters her second season as assistant coach for the women’s volleyball program under head coach, Jenna Ness. She is a former Iowa Conference student-athlete at Luther College, graduating in May 2013 with a degree in Art Management (Printmaking). In her time with the Norse, she appeared in 300 games and averaged 2.15 kills per game. As a junior, Brown was an all-conference honorable mention selection, appearing in 29 matches for Luther and contributing 257 kills. In her senior season, she appeared in all 32 matches for the Norse and earned herself a spot on the all-conference team. Her career with the Norse garnered the attention of her peers as she was nominated for Luther’s Female Student-Athlete of the Year as a senior.

Off the court, Brown was involved with Luther’s SAAC Chapter, attending the Iowa Conference Student Athlete Leadership Conference in 2012.

A native of Altoona, Iowa, Brown now resides in Dubuque and is an Area Coordinator in addition to her duties as assistant coach.
