Kingdom

Dear Family,
It seems impossible, but we’re already on the last unit for this season of church school. It has been a great year! We’ve learned so much about our great God and what it means for us to serve God and others. It’s excit-ing for all of us to know that we’re all part of God’s family and that God uses us too.
During the next six sessions we’ll focus on God’s growing kingdom. We’ll do that by hearing God’s great sto-ries about people he used to build the kingdom. Specifically, we’ll study the stories of Samson, Ruth, Hannah, Samuel, Saul, and David—all of them powerful and exciting.
While the activities we do at church school together are important, you are the primary source of faith nur-ture in the life of your child. That’s exciting, and a little scary! Use the excellent resources we’ve provided—the weekly Show and Share papers and the God’s Big Story cards—to explore the stories we’ve been learning and to jump-start faith nurturing conversations with each other at home.
The Memory Challenge for this unit comes from Psalm 46:1-2. We’ve been singing the words as well as saying them. Ask your child to teach you the song! You can listen to (or purchase) both the Memory Challenge song, “Refuge and Strength,” and our other unit song, “Now I Know,” at www.dwellcurriculum.org.
It’s been a privilege for me to join and support you in nurturing your child’s faith.
Sincerely,
60

RuthBased on the book of Ruth
Narrator: If you’re hungry and have no food, you go wherever you can to find it! During the time of the judges, there was a famine. Rain didn’t fall for the crops, and there was no food to be found anywhere! Some families moved to Moab, where there was food—which was good. But the people of Moab worshiped idols—that was bad. Naomi and her husband and two sons moved to Moab to keep from starving. While they were there, their sons married women of Moab—Ruth and Orpah. Naomi was happy with her growing family!
Naomi: Yes! God is so good to us! We have everything we need!
Narrator: Things went well until one day Naomi’s husband died. Then her two sons died too. Even though Naomi still had Ruth and Orpah, she missed her husband and sons very much! She was so sad! Then one day Naomi heard some great news—the famine in Israel was over!
Naomi: There is food again in Israel. I am going back to the land of my God and my people.
Ruth and Orpah: We will go with you.
Narrator: So the three women set out for the road to Israel. But after walking a short way, Naomi stopped.
Naomi: Go back to Moab and your people. May the Lord bless you for your kindness to me. And may God give you both new husbands.
Narrator: Naomi kissed them both goodbye. They hugged each other.
Orpah: Goodbye, Mother Naomi.
Naomi: Goodbye, my daughter.
Narrator: Still crying, Orpah headed back to Moab. But Ruth refused to leave. It made her sad to see Noami walking to Bethlehem all alone.
Ruth: Please do not make me leave you! I want to go where you go. Where you live, I will live. Your God will be my God. Your people will be my people!

Narrator: Naomi wondered if Ruth was really willing to give up every-thing she had—her home, her friends, her family—in order to belong to God’s family. Naomi wondered about these things, and she praised God in her heart.
Voices: (Pause for the “voices” to speak; give the kids the nod that it’s time.)
Narrator: Naomi and Ruth found a home, but life in Bethlehem was still hard because they were poor.
Ruth: Mother, I will go into the fields and gather grain that the workers leave behind. Then we will have something to eat.
Naomi: Yes, Ruth. And may God go with you, my daughter.
Narrator: Ruth worked in the hot sun day after day. She walked behind the men who were harvesting the grain. She picked up whatever they left. Boaz, the owner of the field, noticed how hard Ruth worked. He spoke to her.
Boaz: Please stay and work in my field. And if you are thirsty, drink from our water jars. You may eat here too.
Ruth: Why are you being so kind to me? I am not even from Bethlehem.
Boaz: I have heard how kind you are to Naomi. And I heard how you left everything to come and live with God’s people. May God be good to you!
Narrator: When Ruth went home that evening, she told Naomi what had happened. Naomi was amazed at how much grain Ruth had gath-ered. Ruth didn’t know that Boaz had told his men to leave some grain for her to find.
Naomi: How kind of Boaz to help you! May the Lord bless him!
Narrator: God blessed Naomi and Ruth with a home, food, and friends. But there’s more! After the harvest, Boaz married Ruth. God gave them a baby boy! Naomi praised God for this baby—a grandson at last! His parents named him Obed, which means “servant of the Lord.”
Naomi: God gave me a family again! Over and over I have said, “Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! This family belongs to God!”

See that woman! She sure looks like Naomi!
Yes, but she looks a lot older!
And she seems so sad.
Where is her husband?
And where are her two sons?
Who is that stranger with her?
Whoever she is, she sure is helping Naomi.

On theWay Home
Hey Kids! People see what we look like on the out-side, but God sees our hearts.
On the right side of the heart, write words that describe what people see when they look at you to-day—hair and eye color, clothes, shoes, and so on.
On the left side, write words that describe what God sees when he looks into your heart.
