and it is coming to Wood County, July 10-12, 2018!

Counties are selected three years in advance to allow for planning. Organizing the show

involves nearly 20 operating committees with chairs, co-chairs and members numbering in

education events, youth activities, rural and family living information, equipment and supplies for small and large

acreages to name a few. Visitors will include both large and small farmers, individuals from agribusiness, families

and those interested or curious in wanting to learn more about agriculture.

The proceeds from WFTD will fund an endowment that will support 4-H and youth opportunities in the county for

years to come. Past counties have used funds for scholarships, grants and civic projects. In addition, a book of

Wood County Agriculture will be developed to be distributed to county schools, clubs and libraries.

Volunteers are the backbone of this event! There are volunteer opportunities before, during and after the show,

covering all aspects of the show, including admissions, grounds, food service, parking, traffic/safety and more!

NEW FOR 2018! Wisconsin State Fair is pleased to announce implementation of a new national certification

program available for youth. Completion of this informative and educational program, “Youth for the Quality Care

of Animals” (YQCA), will be required for all youth who exhibit animal projects (Beef, Dairy, Goats, Poultry, Rabbits,

Sheep and Swine) at the 2018 Wisconsin State Fair Junior Shows. This interactive program will reinforce current

animal industry best practices and awareness of critically important animal messaging. This special program

features interspecies information designed to supplement project education for Beef, Dairy, Goat, Poultry, Rabbit,

Sheep, and Swine exhibitors.

YQCA was developed and funded by national livestock industry professionals, extension specialists and livestock

show managers. YQCA certification is rapidly being endorsed and implemented for exhibitors at Fairs and animal

exhibitions across the country. It replaces the National Pork Board’s Youth Pork Quality Assurance (PQA) program

and Wisconsin’s Meat Animal Quality Assurance (MAQA) program.

Course content includes an age appropriate module from each of the following program areas:

• Animal Welfare (basic needs, proper animal handling, biosecurity, etc.)

• Food Safety (medications, medicated feeds, withdrawal times, avoiding residue, etc.)

• Character Education (ethics, goal setting, career exploration, etc.)

YQCA training can be taken in two ways: in-person or online. The online training modules are available at any time

and are designed specifically for the age of the trainee. The fee for the online option is $12/exhibitor/year. For more

information on this option, log on to www.yqca.org.

Wood County will host two in-person YQCA trainings this year. These face-to-face meetings will count as one

educational meeting for Market Sale requirements. If you are exhibiting at the State Fair, the fee for the in-person

training is $3/exhibitor/year. Training dates are:

TUESDAY, APRIL 24th 6:30 – 7:45 p.m. Marshfield Ag Research Station (limit 70 youth)

THURSDAY, MAY 10th 6:30 – 7:45 p.m. McMillan Memorial Library, Wisconsin Rapids

Pre-registration is required for both of these events. Call 715-421-8439 for more information.

Youth wishing to exhibit in the 2018 Wisconsin State Fair Junior Shows must provide his/her YQCA certification

number when entering by the entry deadline on June 6, 2018. Youth who do not provide a YQCA certification

number, or did not pass the YQCA modules for the current calendar year will not be eligible to participate in the

2018 Wisconsin State Fair Junior Shows.

will be discussing the awards program at Creative Arts Day and start planning for the fall youth awards program.

Youth and adults alike are welcome to attend and contribute your thoughts and ideas.

Leaders Association president.

Thank you Laura, for stepping back into this role!

LEADERS’ ASSOCIATION UPDATES

“WELCOME” LAURA HUBER! “Welcome” to Laura Huber, who became the 4-H Program Coordinator for the Wood County

UW-Extension office, effective February 1st. Laura has been working in our office in a part-time

capacity for the last 1 1/2 years, and we are glad to have her in a permanent, full-time role.

Laura has a passion for making Wood County 4-H the best it can be. You may see changes to

programs and events that have been around for a while, as well as implementation of new

ideas. These are all indicators that Laura is evolving the program to meet the needs of our

Wood County 4-H families. She has already taken charge in organizing the recent PALS Bowling

Night, as well as Project Discovery Day, which were both very successful!
