Woodland Elementary School May, 2020 Monthly Message from the Principal Dear Woodland Families! I sit here after weeks of reflection on how to properly wrap up a school year that was not like any other we have experienced. We have all certainly been part of something historical for our country and world. Often times when we think of history, we think of the not so goodthings. One could look at COVID-19, and the shutdown of schools as just that. However, as I reflect on the last weeks, I have another perspective for everyone to think about, specifi- cally pertaining to the education of your children. I am in the trenches as well, working with my dear Abby and Michael, while wondering when things will change or go back to what was normal.I think about it often! When I think about Woodland, I am reminded that it is much more than a school or build- ing. Not to repeat myself too much, but it is something greater. It represents so much more than a place where kids go to learn. Rather, it represents a community. Woodland is a community of learners, of people who care about the future, and of people who want to make a difference for our children and the futures that they have yet to experience. When the schools shut down, that became even more evident to me. As I listened to teacher and staff collaborations (via Google), it was simply inspiring to hear the words and passion for helping out our kids and families. Our staff stayed the courseand sincerely wanted to make sure that everyone was OKand safe. As they became connected in a new way, they also nudged new learning in a way that was safe, interesting, engaging, and meaning- ful. The simple fact is that while many of us are worried about our kids being behind,I be- lieve they may be more ahead than anyone realizes! Academic content can be backfilledand we will have a plan for that need when we return to school. That in a lot of ways is the easy part. The fact that your kids became more in- quisitive, more independent, and more concerned about the well-being of others, simply will prepare them in ways that may have been missed in the past. Our children have grown up tremendously in the last weeks. They have a new understanding of what it means to be in- dependent, they have learned or re-learned their community and family values, they have learned more about what their parents and other loved ones do for work, they have a new appreciation for social interaction, they have learned a plethora of technological tools that will propel them into the future, they have a new appreciation for learning, and most im- portantly, they get to determine the future by how they take all of this new learning and move it forward for our world. That is a responsibility that will become more of a realization in the coming years. I for one am excited to see what our children do, how they do it, and how they will simply change the world!

Monthly Message from the Principal

Dear Woodland Families!

I sit here after weeks of reflection on how to properly wrap up a school year that was not like any other we have experienced. We have all certainly been part of something historical for our country and world. Often times when we think of history, we think of the “not so good” things. One could look at COVID-19, and the shutdown of schools as just that. However, as I reflect on the last weeks, I have another perspective for everyone to think about, specifi-cally pertaining to the education of your children. I am in the trenches as well, working with my dear Abby and Michael, while wondering when things will change or go back to what was “normal.” I think about it often!

When I think about Woodland, I am reminded that it is much more than a school or build-ing. Our staff “stayed the course” and sincerely wanted to make sure that everyone was “OK” and safe. As they became connected in a new way, they also nudged new learning in a way that was safe, interesting, engaging, and meaning-ful. The simple fact is that while many of us are worried about our kids being “behind,” I be-lieve they may be more ahead than anyone realizes!

Academic content can be “backfilled” and we will have a plan for that need when we return to school. That in a lot of ways is the easy part. The fact that your kids became more in-quisitive, more independent, and more concerned about the well-being of others, simply will prepare them in ways that may have been missed in the past. Our children have grown up tremendously in the last weeks. They have a new understanding of what it means to be in-dependent, they have learned or re-learned their community and family values, they have learned more about what their parents and other loved ones do for work, they have a new appreciation for social interaction, they have learned a plethora of technological tools that will propel them into the future, they have a new appreciation for learning, and most im-portantly, they get to determine the future by how they take all of this new learning and move it forward for our world. That is a responsibility that will become more of a realization in the coming years. I for one am excited to see what our children do, how they do it, and how they will simply change the world!

No matter the situation, our district purpose and vision for our kids remains the same. Our students will grow as problem solvers to reach their potential in academics, arts and co-curriculars. This was, and continues to be evident, even if we are not sitting in desks in classrooms. As I have stated in the past, every single door is open for each of our stu-dents, and the work we do each day matters in carving that path to something great. I hope that you too have witnessed our vision in your own child, and that you too are excited about them reaching their potential as a student in the Kimberly Area School District. Woodland Elementary School is an amazing place to learn and work. This organization is made up of people who all have a major impact on our students. Simply stated, we have the best teachers, paraprofessionals, parents, custodians, secretaries, nurses, lunch su-pervisors, counselors, school psychologists, resource officers, bus drivers, and volunteers anyone could ask for. Our children are in great hands and as your principal, I am not wor-ried one bit about our future. I am more than optimistic and in fact super excited for what the future will bring. Thank you to all of the individuals who make Woodland more than just a school! Over the summer, continue to make great memories with your children. Those are the most important things for all of us now as we have an opportunity that we should all run with! Let’s make this one of the best year’s yet! With this final message of the 2019-2020 school year, I wish you all an amazing month of May, and summer. Please see the at-tached weekly notes with important information regarding our “end of year”. As always, I welcome you to email or call anytime that you have questions, comments, or con-cerns. Take care and thanks again for your continued support of this amazing place! Go Wolves! Timothy M. Doleysh, Ph.D.

Woodland Elementary Weekly Notes May 13, 2020

● Important Student Material Drop-Off Information: The Kimberly Area School District

is working through plans to return student materials to your homes. Below is information for you and your families relative to this process. More detailed information will be shared and communicated out in the weeks to come regarding the specific schedules for Woodland Elementary School. If you do not have a current address in Infinite Campus, please send an email to [email protected] with that address.

❖ All items will be dropped off by Lamers buses between June 1st and June 4th,

between 9:00 am & 3:00 pm. ❖ Items will be dropped off on the porch/close to the home similar to a UPS/Fedex

drop off. ❖ Personnel completing the drop offs will have PPE gear including masks and

gloves. ❖ Personnel completing the drop offs will not be interacting with students for safety

reasons.

● Timber Rattler Reading Program Tickets: All students will be receiving a game ticket to a Timber Rattlers game, along with a hotdog voucher and Cold Stone coupon, courtesy of the Woodland PTO. The ticket and coupons will be included in the bag with your student’s belongings that will be dropped off the first week of June.

● Attention 4th Grade Parents!: If you are interested in participating in band in 5th

grade, please know that at this point, the August band camp is still planned as scheduled. This band camp will run during the first two weeks of August. Any student planning to play an instrument should plan to attend this band camp. Your student will learn important beginning band skills during this camp that will ensure they have a confident start on their instrument. We are also putting together a plan to complete student instrument tryouts before this August band camp. We hope to complete these tryouts in the safest way possible while providing guidance during your student's instrument selection. These tryouts will hopefully be completed in the month of July. Future information will be communicated to you through 4th grade teachers. Please understand that we are trying our best to provide your student with a quality beginning band experience during this time. Please reach out with questions and concerns. ● Report Cards: As we approach the end of the year, please be aware that the “Grades” tab in Infinite Campus will be closed to parents starting on May 22nd and opening again on June 4th after 4:00 pm. Closing the “Grades” tab allows teachers the opportunity to enter student grades and create the progress reports. On June 4th you can access your child’s report card via Infinite Campus. Please note that when reviewing your student’s report card, teacher comments do not show up in the portal when looking at the main “Grades” screen. They do, however, if you access the “Reports” screen. From there, you can generate a report card in pdf format that will have all the comments. If you need to set up your parent portal account in Infinite Campus, please click here.

● 2020 Fun Run T-Shirts: The PTO is now collecting shirt sizes for the Fall 2020 Fun Run. Woodland PTO will provide every student attending Woodland Elementary and Woodland Intermediate in the Fall a Fun Run t-shirt. When selecting a T-shirt size please keep in mind the Fun Run takes place in October. Your child may grow over the summer. You will need to fill out a separate form for each student. Thank you!

● Counseling Services: This is just a reminder that counseling services are available to students who may need support during this time of online learning. Please see the attached flyer from our school counselor, Mrs. Karoses, for information regarding support resources.

● Attendance: When you know that your child will not be able to participate in online learning due to absence or illness, please call the attendance line at 920-730-0924, option 1, as you normally would and leave a message about the length and nature of the absence. Thank you!

○ ● Important As We Approach the End of the Year - Keep Contact Information Up To

Date: As we approach the end of the school year, it is very important that we have updated and accurate addresses and contact information in Infinite Campus. Please take a moment to log into your Parent Portal account and ensure all of your contact information—home phone, cell phones and email addresses are all correct and current. Once logged in, from the dropdown menu on the left of the screen, choose “More”. At that point, click on “Family Information”. There you will be able to verify and update phone and email contact information for each individual. Address changes can only be made by the administration office. If you have a new address, please complete the change form and return via email to [email protected] as soon as possible.

● Chromebook and Technology Assistance: Thank you for your patience and support as we transition to the world of online learning. We are “here” in the virtual, online sense of that word, to continue to support your child’s learning and social-emotional needs. Please reach out to us with questions or concerns. If your child is unsure of how to use an app or Chromebook feature, they should contact their teacher. If you are experiencing an issue with district-owned technology hardware, please contact your child’s teacher and they will inform the proper department for assistance.

● Open Enrollment: The deadline for submitting open enrollment applications has been extended until May 29th at 4:00 pm. A link to the open enrollment application is available on the Kimberly Area School District website. To obtain more information about open enrollment, please contact Jen Bixler at 423-4166.

● KASD Meal Program: Please see the attached flyer regarding the school closure meal program. Please note that meals will not be available on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25th, however, an additional meal will be included for the holiday during the prior Friday pick-up.

A Message From Your School Counselor - Mrs. Karoses

Well, things are certainly different than we are used to. We are facing the challenge of socially distancing ourselves and learning via an online platform. That being said, I know that we can do it and will make it through this time by leaning on each other and doing our best. I want to emphasize that last part, doing our best. That is all we can ask of ourselves; whether we are students, parents, teachers, or staff. Did you know that your students' online education will also include school counseling services? Last week they all had an opportunity to begin their weekly mini Lifeskills lesson online. If you have more than one child in grades 5K-2nd or 3rd-4th, they could have twice the fun and do their Lifeskills together. There is one lesson each week for students in 5K-2nd grade and one for those in 3rd and 4th grade. In the near future I will also be offering some online chats with students and even groups. Remember, each student will need different support from their parents and teachers just like each of us will need different support from our friends and family. Please know that we are here for you. If you have questions regarding the lessons your teachers are posting, please reach out to them. If you or your child need to talk about coping and taking care of ourselves during this social distancing time period, please reach out to your teacher or me as well. Below you will find the ways to contact me. Keep your heads up and we will get through this!
