New Supermarket OpensIn Sunnyside

by Rob MacKay

There’s always hope in beginnings, andin this case, there’s a lot of produce, too.

A C-Town supermarket celebrated itsgrand opening at 41-25 Greenpoint Ave. inSunnyside on Oct. 11. The storefront hadbeen vacant – and the area had no localgrocery — since last December, when aFoodtown closed at that site.

Individually operated, the C-Town has adeli, prepared food section, and a bakery andcarries Krasdale Foods products as well asother brand name groceries.

by Mary Caulfield

Frances Schmidt and Donald McCallian, each earned the title “Luke AdamsSunnysider of the Year” in a dual ceremonycovering years 2013 and 2014. More than100 of their friends, neighbors and publicofficials applauded them on Thursday, Oc-tober 17 at the Tangra Ballroom on QueensBlvd. The award is given once a year tohonor extraordinary contribution to our area.

This year Sunnyside Artists presentedthe event. “Only one title is given a year togive proper respect to one deserving per-son,” said SA President Manny Gomez, “butwe had a tie, so we decided to celebrate twoyears on the same night.” The event is not afundraiser, Luke Adams explained, and thegroup went all out to provide an old-fash-ioned good time for honorees and guests.

The crystal award for Frances read inpart, “whose moral example, loyalty, inde-fatigability, and compassion are an exampleto all and make our lives better.”

Don’s award included ”whose leader-ship, attention to detail, energy and compas-sion have made our lives better and ourstreets safer.”

The evening began with a with theSunnyside Drum Corps as arriving guestswere greeted by the talented young people insparkling white uniforms, who beat a thun-derous welcome. A crowd of pedestriansstopped in their tracks, enjoying the soundreverberate up and down Queens Boulevard.Joseph Sabba and Anthony Lana began thecorps in 1977, and Tony continues to rununtil this day.

Once inside, diners met KrisCzerniachowicz affixed her handmade bowties and pearl-shaped nametags on lapelsand dresses. Two handsome and fit fellowsin yellow trainers from Phyzique gym es-corted all guests down the marble staircaseto an elegant room, with 17 tables with whitetablecloths and a dozen pink roses on each.

Chandeliers glowed as diners ate threekinds of appetizers, rib eye steak, gingeredfish, chicken cutlet, Pad Thai and strawberrycake with ice cream and enjoyed a free glassor wine or beer donated by Anthony Lodatiof Lowery Liquors, John Lowry (no rela-tion), and Richard Drake, all who also do-nated raffle gifts. Many men wore tuxedoesand looked quite dashing, as did the ladies inpearls, dresses and heels.

“Wow, this singer’s voice is good,”said Ona Whitman, of the Rita JacksonJazz Duo. Jackson’s sophisticated stylingwas supported by the soulful playing of hernoted guitarist, Gene Bertoncini, in townplaying with Tony Bennett. Jackson andDJ mix were arranged by musician/com-poser Trevor Bowen head of the local artsgroup, Art Space Q.

The event had a traditional feel, withReverend Jerome Jecewiz from St. Raphael’sChurch leading all in grace before dinner. Ina very Sunnyside multicultural moment, sponsor Turkish Cultural Center Queens, was called upon to rush over with theirstanding American flag so that a Pledge ofAllegiance could start the evening. Only twodetails, dozens of prints by art world mastersdecorating the walls and colorful sponsorads in the program, indicated the event waspresented by an arts group.

Very Reverend Brian Dowd of Queen ofAngels presented the award to Frances. Hecaptured the essence of why she is so ad-mired when he said, “I see Frances everyday.” She is “always there, whether to wor-ship or to work, her daily, life-long service toothers guides her in all she does.”

Frances received an unanticipated laughwhen she accepted her award and flowers. With her usual reticence to be in the spotlight

(continued from front page)

Sunnyside Shows Up to Honor the Extraordinaryshe began to speak, then she realized she hada captive audience who might have someleisure time. So true to form, she suddenlysaid, “And anyone who is free Saturdaymorning, please come help clean up JohnVincent Daniels Park at 8:30 am.”

Patricia Dorfman, founder of SunnysideArtists gave Don McCallian his award, say-ing he was one of few locals who could keepa secret, and helped “his fellow man withlove and service day after day,” no matterhis or her status in the world. She said Donwould have made a wonderful cop, baseballmanager or priest, the latter not as muchbecause he so loved his wife Eileen.

With his typical modesty, Don’s speechfocused on others. First he asked people toattend the next United Forties meeting, ofwhich he is president, and then spoke aboutthe people who inspired him, including hissister Veronica, Gertrude McDonald, LilyGavin and Walter McCaffrey.

Speeches were short and focused onDon and Frances, even from the officialswho brought special additional awards.Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer spokehighly of the recipients and brought framedawards, as did Assemblywoman CatherineNolan who drove down from Albany. Sena-tor Michael Gianaris praised bothSunnysiders. Awards and words from Con-gressman Joseph Crowley were presentedby Deidre Feerick.

Luke Adams, who explained that theaward was named after him against his will, said the honor came with a mixed blessing. When relatives in Ireland last year read thatFather Brian Dowd had been named “LukeAdams Sunnysider of the Year,” they calledhim, immediately, worried Luke had died.

Paula Hostetter, a singer with the NewYork City Opera, sang “Danny Boy” rewrit-ten by her as “Donny Boy,” and closed theevening with a rousing version of Don’sfavorite song, “God Bless America.”

Among those showing up to pay re-spects to Schmidt and McCallian were theQueen Borough North Commanding Of-ficer Chief Diana Pizzuti, 108 CommandingOfficer Captain Brian Hennessey, Commu-nity Board 2 Chair Joseph Conley, GertrudeMcDonald, 108 Council President DianeBallek, and a cadre of well-wishers from themany local clubs, including Lions and UnitedForties, and St. Raphael’s and Queen ofAngels parishes. Ten free raffle gifts camefrom Lowery Liquors and Bing’s Hallmarkwere welcomed by the winners. Sidetracksdonated a $50 gift certificate. PhyziqueGym’s Nikos Komporozos and Rich Bundywere also sponsors.

Other sponsors were the Woodside Her-ald, Rigo Cardoso of Pronto Car & Limou-sine, Gabriel at Superior Market, OguzhanTuran, Steve Harris, Ira Greenberg, Simon& Nuty Donikian, Ann Cofta, Carol Burch,Dragongfly Graphics, Christopher Whalen,Tony & Leena Tang of UPS, and MaureenLynch of Edward Lynch Funeral Home.

Sunnyside Artists described it-self on the program as “a group ofover 300 local artists and support-ers who promote excellence in thearts, and help all to regain ourinnate but often forgotten exhila-ration about art, local history, cul-ture, imaginative trade, and com-munity spirit through local eventsand programs.

Dear Editor,While attending Jr. High 125, back in the 1960’s, our assignment was

to write a composition for the NY World’s Fair 1964-1965 and we weretold that it would then be put into a time capsule to be placed underneaththe medallion which was located at the entrance way to the Fairgroundsonce you came off of the #7 Train Station of the then, Shea Stadium,Flushing Meadow Park grounds.

Does anyone else know anything about that? Was our class assign-ment really buried there? If so, at what point in time will the capsule beopened to reveal what was put into it? Will it be 50 or 100 years from thatpoint in time?

Take Advantage of “OpenEnrollmenTake Advantage of

“Open Enrollment”At many places of work, it’s

“open enrollment” season — thetime where you get to makechanges to the various benefitsyou receive from your employer. As you review your overall ben-efits package, what areas shouldyou focus on?

Here are three possibilities:Life insurance — If your em-

ployer offers life insurance as abenefit, and you haven’t alreadysigned up for it, consider adding itduring your open enrollment pe-riod — because life insurance canbe important to your family’s fi-nancial security. If you alreadyhave life insurance with your em-ployer, you may want to take thetime, during open enrollment, toreview your beneficiary designa-tions. If you’ve experienced achange in your family situation, such as divorce or remarriage, you’ll want to update your benefi-ciaries, as needed.

However, the amount of lifeinsurance offered by your employerin a group policy may not be suffi-cient for your needs, so you maywant to consult with a financialprofessional to determine if youshould add private, or individual, coverage. You may find that indi-vidual coverage is comparable, interms of cost, to your employer’scoverage. Also, individual cover-

age is “portable” — that is, you cantake it with you if you change jobs.

Disability insurance — Youremployer may also offer disabilityinsurance as a low-cost benefit. The coverage can be invaluable. Infact, nearly one in three women, and about one in four men, canexpect to suffer a disability thatkeeps them out of work for 90 daysor longer at some point during theirworking years, according to theLife and Health Insurance Foun-dation for Education (LIFE).Again, as was the case with lifeinsurance, your employer’s disabil-ity policy may not be enough foryour needs, so you may need toconsider additional coverage.

Retirement plan — Your em-ployer may offer a 401(k) or simi-lar retirement plan, such as a 403(b)plan, if you work for an educa-tional institution or a nonprofit or-ganization, or a 457(b) plan, if youwork for a governmental unit. Allthese plans offer the chance to con-tribute pretax dollars; so the moreyou put in, the lower your taxableincome. Equally important, yourearnings can grow tax deferred, which means your money can ac-cumulate faster than if it wereplaced in an account on which youpaid taxes every year.

Consequently, try to con-tribute as much as you can pos-

sibly afford to your 401(k) orother employer-sponsored plan.If you’ve gotten a raise recently, consider boosting your contri-butions during open enrollment. Also, take this opportunity toreview the array of investmentsyou’ve chosen for your 401(k)or other plan. If you feel thatthey’re underperforming andnot providing you with thegrowth opportunities you need, you may want to consider mak-ing some changes. You mightalso think about making adjust-ments if your portfolio hasshown more volatility than thelevel with which you are com-fortable.
