DenDekker Announces 2010 Summer Reading Challenge

Queens Borough President Helen Marshall (C)and City Councilmembers Elizabeth Crowley (second from right) and Eric Ulrich(R)were on hand, along with David Slavkin (L), representing Assem-blyman Michael Miller, and Pat McCabe (second from left), represent-ing Senator Joseph Addabbo, Tuesday, April 20th to announce fundingfrom their offices that will allow displaced Woodhaven seniors to returnto their community by renting space from the financially-ailingWoodhave-Richmond Hill Volunteer Ambulance Corps on JamaicaAvenue. Ms. Kathleen Dalbey (third from right) accepts symboliccheck for $25,000 from Marshall for renovations at the corps headquar-ters. Additional funding of approximately $15,000 was provided byother elected officials. Others at the check presentation are Judy Kleve,a vice president of Catholic Charities, which operates the center, and PatCritelli (left of Marshall), of Woodhaven Senior Center. The Woodhavenseniors had been temporaily transported to the Richmond Hill Centerafter the space they were in was needed by a local church.

On April 10, 2010, the officeof Assemblymember MichaelDenDekker (D-Jackson Heights)sponsored its first Queens Blood

Drive. Held at MonsignorMcClancy High School inQueens, the event yielded 16pints of life-giving blood for useby the New York Blood Center.

“Being a blood donor is aneasy way of helping others,”

Assemblyman DenDekker saidas he made his donation to-ward saving the lives of others.“It’s good to know that forevery pint of blood collected, three lives can be saved.”

Participants in the blood drive

were given a brief medicalcheckup, followed by a short train-ing session. Trained personnelfrom the New York Blood Centerwere on hand to administer theexaminations, and to take blood.

On April 21, 2010,Assemblymember MichaelDenDekker (D-Jackson Heights) an-nounced the New York StateAssembly’s annual Summer Read-ing Challenge for 2010. Coordi-nated in partnership with New YorkState Library’s “Summer Reading atNew York Libraries” program, theAssembly’s 2010 Summer ReadingChallenge is designed to spread theword among New Yorkers about theimportance of summer reading andthe value of New York State’s locallibraries. “Summer is right around

the corner,” AssemblymanDenDekker said. “For many NewYorkers, summer means backyardbarbeques, visits to the park, andtrips to the beach. Along with thebeach ball and umbrella, make sureyou bring along a book to read. It’sa portable activity that’s inexpen-sive and fun – an unbeatable summercombination.” To participate in theprogram, children must read aloneor with someone else for at least 15minutes each day for 40 days duringJuly and August. The reader is re-quired to mark the days on a calen-

dar, then send the calendar toAssemblymember DenDekker’s of-fice. Once received, participantswill be rewarded with a reading cer-tificate that will be either be mailedto the reader’s home, or presented ata local school.

The Summer Reading at NewYork Libraries initiative suggests thatkids explore New York State’s ad-venturous present through books thathighlight New York State’s colorfuland exciting past. During the Sum-mer Reading Challenge 2010, chil-dren can read “The Amazing Impos-

sible Erie Canal” by Cheryl Har-ness; “Samuel de Champlain” byLiz Sonneborn; and “Tar Beach”,the fantasy of an 8-year-old whofiles about her apartment-buildingrooftop, by Faith Ringgold.

“It’s important that our chil-dren read,” AssemblymanDenDekker concluded. “Readingis an excellent way to learn some-thing new. We know that kids whoread do better in school. Give yourchild a chance to do better in life byenrolling him or her in the 2010Summer Reading Challenge.”

Blood Center, as well as thosewhose lives will be saved throughthese blood donations, I’d like tothank those Queens residents whoturned out for this event. My hopeis that next year we’ll collect 30pints - that would save 90 lives.”

For more information on the 2010 Summer Reading Challenge, please contact Assemblymember DenDekker’s district office at (718) 457-0384, or at [email protected].

Though it’s usually not a goodidea to retreat to your eyeglassesonce you’ve been fitted for andhave adjusted to contact lenses, there are times when you may

want to – when it makes sense. You may want to slip on yourglasses first thing in the morning, before you’ve gotten yourselftogether; or late at night, after

your contacts have been removed.Certainly you would be happy tohave a pair of eyeglasses handy(with current prescription) shouldyou lose a contact lens.

With soft contact, other thanthe normal distortions from eye-glasses, it is very easy to inter-change contacts and spectacleswithout any visual disturbances.Hard contacts pose a problem. After removing hard lenses, mostpeople have difficulty seeing withglasses. This may last an hour orso. Also, your vision with glasseswill vary depending on the time ofday you wear them, and how longthe contacts were in your eyes.

CUTS RIBBON AT OPENING OF NEW YORK PUBLICLIBRARY PROCESSING CENTER IN LONG ISLAND CITY

Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer spoke at the ribbon cutting for the newly renovated New York Public Library processing center in LongIsland City. The processing center features a new sorting machine which is believed to be the largest in the world, with the capacity to sort 7,500items an hour and reduce waiting time for requested items for up to a day.

“During lean economic times, when people need library services the most, projects that are able to increase the speed of services areimperative,” said Jimmy Van Bramer. “This processing center, while not open directly to the public, will greatly improve the services that libraryusers receive by delivering items that library users have requested more quickly. Additionally, the center’s location in Long Island City is yetanother sign that Long Island City is becoming more and more of an attractive neighborhood for commercial, industrial, and residential purposes.”

CONTINUES TOUR OF SCHOOLS WITH VISIT TO P.S. 199During a tour of P.S. 199, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer met with Principal Anthony Inzerillo and spoke with several classes

Letters To

The Editor

Dear Editor,I am writing this letter re-

garding the wall of graffiti onthe Rite Aid Drugstore locatedat 46-02. This eyesore has ex-isted for many years- no onesees it anymore. What does it

take to paint over it? As I walkaround the neighborhood, I seebusinesses like Marabella’sPizza and Associated paintingover graffiti- why doesn’t themanager of Rite Aid? We can-not give up our neighborhoodsto this plague. Now would be agood time to bring this to thenotice of the management fortwo reasons: One is that boththis store and the one further

down the block is merging intoone store. The second reason isthat a new neighbor has movedin- Bank of America. Whyshould the new clean bank havea sloppy careless neighbor rightacross the street? Rite Aid hasbeen here for years and we as aneighborhood keep them in busi-ness. It’s time for them to giveback.

Sincerely,Scandi Khan
