The National Puliima Aboriginal
Languages and Technology
Conference recently held in Melbourne
was attended by our Gumbaynggirr
Language Teacher, Larry Hancock.
Larry’s presentation entitled "Reviving
the Gumbaynggirr Language in a High
School" was very well received. Larry,
along with Michael Jarrett, sing in a
Gumbaynggirr Language group
(Janugiina) and this year they won the
'Australia's Got Language' Talent Quest
at the Conference.
Last week we had our annual Creative
Expo exhibition and performance
evening. Once again the talent of our
students was outstanding and appreci-
ated by our guests. Full story on page 4.

Last Friday night many of our community
members visited our 2015 Creative Expo.
The Expo showcased many of our best
student works and in particular many of our
major projects that were marked as part of
this year’s HSC. Once again, the work was
outstanding! The artwork, the musical live
performances, our drama performances, our
hospitality classes created exceptional
coffee and food, and the major woodwork
and metalwork projects were of very high
quality. The multimedia presentations which
included sound animation 3D graphics and
video were astounding and the intricate
textile major projects were as good as you
can buy in some of our most exclusive
shops.
One area of particular interest this year was
the projects developed by our engineering
students. I was amazed at the miniature, re-
mote controlled robots that did battle with
each other trying to burst the other robot’s
balloon.
Visitors also could have a hands on
experience using our 3D printer. 3D printing
is beginning to transform many industries; I
wonder what we will be printing in 5 years
from now?
From the Principal’s Desk
We are indeed preparing our students
for a creative and successful future.
We have heard a lot recently from our new
Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, about the
need for Australia to become more creative
and build entrepreneurial skills in our young
people (and some old ones too). Our
students at Woolgoolga High School are
exactly targeting this new skillset and those
skillsets were front and centre at this year’s
Creative Expo. We are indeed preparing our
students for a creative and successful future.
It is not often that a Woolgoolga High School
staff member is asked to present at a
National conference. Last week Larry
Hancock, as mentioned on the front page of
this newsletter, presented at an Australia
wide indigenous languages conference in
Melbourne.
Congratulations to Larry on his hard work
and dedication over many years in develop-
ing quality teaching resources to help in the
teaching of the Gumbaynggirr language at
our school and in fact many other schools.
His tools and ideas are being shared for use
in many schools across Australia.
Congratulations this week to Ryan and Fiona
Cooper for being selected to attend a
student camp at Sydney University in the
upcoming holidays… Well Done!

The Visual Arts students have achieved wonderful works
for their HSC, leaving many admiring their outstanding
abilities and imagination. Each student selected a theme
and explored this with a variety of mediums. They have
really excelled this year and should be congratulated on
their magnificent Art Works.
The HSC Textiles and Design students had a colourful
display of very detailed and intricate textile pieces that
were a credit to them. Many hours of work went in to
achieving these professional results. Junior Textile and
Design students also had a variety of work on display
with many outstanding quilts and garments.
Industrial Technology had a variety of Multimedia HSC
works displayed for the audience to watch and participate
in. There were movies, animations and digital games
created by individual students. Again they were a won-
derful display of our students’ ability and dedication.
Industrial Arts also had exceptional HSC wood work and
junior wood work displayed. Engineering was represent-
ed by a variety of structures made in junior classes and
tested for strength and function.
Visit the school’s website for more photos
We were entertained by the students’ performanc-
es throughout the evening. Drama students per-
formed an impeccable street theatre piece that
was executed brilliantly and was a pleasure for all
to watch. Music students sang, performed solos
and played as a band for the entire evening. The
music really set a wonderful atmosphere for the
crowd to appreciate.
Our Hospitality students worked tirelessly to feed
the audience and the food and beverages were
delicious and beautifully presented and served.
Thank you to these students for making everyone
feel welcome and well fed.
The Creative Expo is a wonderful evening show-
casing the talents of our high school students. I
would like to thank all the students who performed
on the night or served food and also thank the stu-
dents whose work was on display. This evening
would not be possible without the support of staff. I
would like to thank all staff who played a role in
presenting such an outstanding evening for the
parents and community of Woolgoolga High
School.

Blake Cox and Coby Lodge of Year 8 and
Luke Beresford, Russell Ryan, Jayden Per-
kins, Mereki West and Lachlan Nash of Year
9 attended the Standing Tall Indigenous
Leadership Program at Scotts Head on Mon-
day 26th October.
The boys experienced Scotts Head with the
Unkya LALC (local Aboriginal Land Council)
Eco tours. They listened to authentic creation
stories of the Gumbaynggirr people and
learnt how the ocean was created and how
the first wave was made. The boys got to
see ancient fish traps and learn about bush
tucker from our friendly guide Michael Do-
novan.
Once our tour was finished the boys were
keen to get to the Big Banana and test out
the new water park. We would like to thank
Lloyd Lynwood, Helen Lambert, Eric Lock-
wood and Josh Dooner for all their hard work
on another successful experience.
Indigenous
Leadership Program
Each year the Bunga Barrabugu program
attracts hundreds of motivated and talented
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
from around the country and this year there
were an unprecedented number of applicants.
This program offers students a range of hands
on activities with academics and university
students. They also learn about entry pathways
to the University of Sydney and support availa-
ble for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
students.
The Summer Program is not just about books
and studying - it’s fun too. Travis and Fiona will
experience the opportunities that come with
studying in the largest city in Australia and
enjoy extracurricular activities such as theatre,
a harbour cruise, a talent quest and more.
Young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
people from all over the country will form friend-
ships during this program which will last a life-
time.
We would like to congratulate Travis and Fiona
on their success and wish them an enlightening
and exciting trip.
Travis Ryan and Fiona Cooper of
Year 11 have been successful in
their applications to attend this
program in January 2016.

Woolgoolga High School
2015 has seen an exceptional level of skilled and creative artworks entered in Woolgoolga
High School’s annual Art Smart Competition. The exhibition showcases the variety of work
completed at the school over the course of the year and is set up in the Visual Arts foyer area
for students to appreciate for a few weeks.
The competition is open to all years and has a variety of sections students can enter, including
painting, sculpture, drawing and photography. This year we had a significant number of entries
from a variety of year groups, all of an outstanding skill level.
We are fortunate to have Woolgoolga Art Gallery sponsor the prizes for this competition. Each
year Woolgoolga Art Gallery nominate one of its members to judge, in conjunction with other
staff from our school to make the selection for winners across each section.
Winners this year will receive a variety of great prizes, which will be presented at a school
assembly, and all artworks have been on exhibit in the Art Department over the past few
weeks. The winning entries were also displayed at the Creative Expo for parents and students
to view.
We encourage all art students to get involved and showcase their creative talents.

Billy Flanagan represented Wool-
goolga High School and the North
Coast school sport team at the
NSWCHS Tennis Champion-
ships last week in Newcastle. The
North Coast team of 8 players
competed against 9 other teams
including some of the top metropol-
itan regions. Billy won 7 out of his
12 matches played helping the
North Coast team achieve 6th
place overall in the championships.
Well done Billy!
Congratulations!
On Friday, 6th March all of Year 10 benefitted from well
being talks as part of the school’s Welfare policy. These
talks, presented by our School Police Liaison Officer,
Senior Constable Snow and Gary Maher, our Youth
Outreach worker from Headspace, focussed on many
issues and challenges Year 10 students face at this
point in their school lives and at this point in their stage
of life.
The talks covered how to maintain a positive self image,
keep yourself safe, building resilience, road safety,
drugs and alcohol and making informed choices pertain-
ing to all these issues.

Mention head lice and most of us
instantly develop an itch. You'll
find these little critters at every
school across Australia - and
probably the world - at some
point during the year.
While head lice and nits, (the eggs of
head lice) are certainly annoying and
persistent, they're not dangerous.
Here's everything you need to know to
rid your kids of head lice and nits.

Whilst waiting at interchanges for our bus company, we ask children to wait in their initial bus wherever practical, until their next bus arrives. This ensures the safety of all children. If a child departs their initial bus for whatever reason, it is important that children stand well clear of the kerb/side of the road of the interchange point. This will ensure that they are clear of incoming buses at the interchange. There have been reports of children walking behind buses and on the road at the Korora Bus Interchange. Unfortunately our company cannot be held responsible if children are walking on roads or behind buses when they should be standing on the pavement away from the kerb at this interchange points. We ask for education from schools and parents to the children about the danger of standing behind buses or on the road at these interchanges. However, the safest method is to wait in the bus until the next bus arrives when-ever possible. Many thanks for your cooperation. Regards
