WORD DANCE PROGRAM

The final outcome of the new revised World

Dance Program was presented to the member

organisations of the WDC at the World Dance

Teacher Committee meeting in Blackpool 2011.

The Committee received the German ADTV

and Swinging World proposals for the revised

WDP. So there has been a lot of consultation

already about the proposals.

Why they are necessary!

In the actual version of the WDP every dance

of the world is included – but not every dance

included is danced all over the world.

But this was the original idea.

Therefore it’s necessary to renew the

WDP - or in small words: “back to the roots”.

• Since dance-styles shall fit to the music

played on the dance floor, a worldwide-valid

program for dancers should first listen to the

music-styles played worldwide and then

choose the appropriate dances.

DANCE-STYLES

Generally couple dancing can be divided into three styles:

1. The first style can be described as social dancing,

which is subject of the WDP.

Social dancing means the style used on social

occasions at any possible location. Dancing in this

style should appear relaxed and elegant.

2. The second dance-style is the level of the medalist.

This still can be considered as part social dancing.

3. The third style is the competition-style.

This deals exclusively with dancing for competitions.

TEACHING AIMS

Besides learning dances and typical moves the most

important aims are:

• The couple should recognize the type of music

(for example Disco, Swing or Waltz) and should be able

to choose the appropriate dance that fits to the music.

• Every beginner should first learn a form and a style of

dancing which looks very natural and elegant and can be

used at every occasion in social life.

This is why the first level is called "social dancing".

• The basic-movement should be the same for everybody

all over the world. As a result everybody can dance with

anybody else from another dance school and country.

TEACHING AIMS

• Every male beginner has to learn to lead. Every female

beginner hast to learn to follow.

The WDP includes only movements and figures that can

be danced according to the principals of lead and follow

(no combinations).

• Figures and variations must be danceable under all

circumstances and must not disturb other couples.

• Hold, technique (footwork, rise and fall etc.) should be

used only to support a natural and elegant movement

and never be exaggerated.
