1. Accretion: gradual coming together; process of growth by accumulation

2. Bier: stand for a coffin

• “The pallbearers lifted the coffin from its bier.”

3. Canard: absurd report spread as a hoax

• “The people did not believe the fake news canard.”

4. Dastardly: cowardly

• “The dastardly driver sped off after causing the car accident.”

5. Endemic: restricted to a particular area

• “The CDC quarantined the town to contain the endemic disease.”

6. Feral: beast-like

• “My dogs make feral noises when they play in the back yard.”

7. Immolate: kill as a sacrifice

• “The primitive tribes immolated the animal in an attempt to appease their gods.”

8. Ingrate: ungrateful person

• “You awful ingrate! You did that after all I’ve done for you?”

9. Lucent: clear; luminous

• “I learned how to speak lucently in my speech class.”

10. Mulct: to get money by fraud

• The con man managed to mulct his way into thousands of dollars by preying upon innocent, naïve people. However, he soon paid with his life.”

11. Olfactory: of the sense of smell

• “Through my olfactory sense, I perceived a wretched odor emanating from the boys bathroom.”

12. Perspicacious: astute; sharp- witted

• “Through my perspicacious intellect, I easily solved the riddle.”

13. Remiss: negligent in performing a

duty

• The remiss student forgot to study for his test and failed miserably. This landed him in summer school where he languished for two long months.”

14. Rococo: Elaborately ornamental

• “The rococo architecture of that building captured my attention.”

15. Sonic: relating to sound

• The plane broke the sonic barrier by flying over 768 miles per hour.

16. Sylvan: wooded

• “We stayed at a cabin in a sylvan area surrounded by wildlife.”

17. Unanimity: complete agreement

• “The unanimity of the vote meant that everyone was in favor of the law.”
