WORD WINDOW ELEMENTS Title Bar-displays document name.

Quick Access Toolbar-provides easy access to frequently used commands.

Ribbon-the control center in Word organized in logical groups collected together under tabs.

Horizontal Ruler-used to set tab stops, indent paragraphs, and change page margins.

Insertion point-blinking vertical bar to insert text.

Scroll Bars-used to display different portions of a document.

Scroll Box shows location of insertion point relative to document.

Status Bar-indicates current page, total number of pages, word count, and button to check spelling and grammar.

The Ribbon is designed to help you quickly find commands to complete a task. Each tab relates to a type of activity. The Home tab contains more frequently used commands.

To reduce screen clutter, some tabs are shown only when they are needed. To minimize the Ribbon, click the Customize Quick Access Toolbar Button.

KEY TIP BADGEKEY TIP BADGE

Key Tip Badge displays a keyboard code icon over each feature available in the current view. The access keys provide a way to quickly use a command by pressing a few keystrokes.

Press and release the ALT key to display key tips.

Press and release the ESC key to remove key tips.

FONTSFONTS The Font, or typeface, defines the appearance and shape of letters, numbers, and special characters.

Font size is measured in points. A single Point is 1/72 of one inch in height.

FONT STYLESFONT STYLES

Font Styles identify how the text appears. Font styles are Toggles (switches between two options such as on

and off).

Boldface-font appears in extra dark lettering.

Italic-font appears slanted or italicized.

Underline-font is underlined.

USING WORD WRAPUSING WORD WRAP Word Wrap allows you to type words in a paragraph continually without pressing the ENTER key at the end of each line. Word will automatically advance to the next line.

You will need to press the enter key to: Insert a blank lines into a document

Begin a new paragraph

Terminate a short line of text and advance to the next line

Left-aligned-flush at the left margin with uneven right edges.

Right-aligned-flush at the right margin with uneven left edges.

Center-positions text horizontally between the left and right margins.

Justify-even at both left and right margins, may add spacers.

The Pictures Tools Tab is displayed only when a graphic is selected and provides formatting options.

A selected graphic is surrounded by small squares called Sizing Handles that can be used to resize the graphic.

Graphics are files containing graphical images. Clip Art is a series of predefined graphics.

A Formatting Mark, aka Nonprinting Character, displays on the screen but it is not visible on a printed document. Displayed using the Show/Hide button.

PAGE BORDERSPAGE BORDERSYou can add a Border to any or all sides of each page in a document, to pages in a section, to the first page only, or to all pages except the first. You can choose the setting, line style, color, or select a graphical border.

SPELLING AND GRAMMAR SPELLING AND GRAMMAR Spelling feature verifies the spelling of words by means of a dictionary stored in the program. When a word is flagged with a red wavy line, it is not in Word’s dictionary.

Grammar feature picks up various grammatical errors and will display a green wavy line.

The Spelling and Grammar Status Icon on the status bar displays a if Word does not detect any errors or an XX if there is a possible error.

CORRECTING ERRORSCORRECTING ERRORS Insert Mode-Word inserts the character as you type and moves all the characters to the right.

Overtype/Typeover Mode-as you type, Word replaces characters to the right of the insertion point.

Backspace Key-deletes to the left of the insertion point.

Delete Key-deletes to the right of the insertion point.
