Words from the South A few weeks ago, my wife and I took a vacation down in the Ozarks. When we travel for vacation or fun we like to take the back roads on the way to wherever we’re going. We commonly encounter fun and interesting things along the way, and this trip was no different. As we got into the middle of Missouri, we came to a small city called Lexington. There was a sign advertising a Civil War Battleground along the road as we neared the city. Erin and I are both history enthusiasts, so this looked like the perfect place to explore for a while. When we first arrived at the education center on that site we were encouraged to watch a 20 minute movie about the Battle of Lexington. Something that caught my attention early in the movie was a building that they called the “Masonic College”. The building was used as a military garrison for the Union army during the early parts of the Civil War. Confederate troops captured the Mason College in the Battle of Lexington in 1861. Union troops eventually recaptured the Masonic College and used it as a headquarters for the remainder of the war. That got me wondering if the name was a coincidence, or if it was somehow affiliated with Freemasonry. I did a little research and found out that it was indeed affiliated with the fraternity. The Grand Lodge of Missouri opened the Masonic College in 1844 in the town of Philadelphia, MO. It quickly outgrew the building they were using. So, in 1847 they laid the cornerstone on a new building for the college, which was located in Lexington, MO. The

two-story brick building was 80’ x 57’ and featured four fluted Ionic columns in the front. The college was primarily intended for the benefit of orphaned children of deceased masons, and each member in the state paid a small per capita fee to support it. After the Civil War the Grand Lodge of Missouri sold the building to the Central Female College, which later changed its name to the Central College for Women. It continued to operate until 1925. In 1932 the building burned down, and a smaller replica of the college was built and still exists on that site today. The replica is pictured above. The original college is shown in the drawing of the Battle of Lexington, below.

From the Desk of the Secretary/Recorder I promised I'd have the dues listed in this month's article. Well the subject didn't come up when I was talking to Debbie and Michelle...I think the increase is $2.50 because we didn't have an increase last year which makes Papillion 39 dues + per capita + assessment $161.50...do not pay early, wait for your letter, the letter will have the correct amount. Royal Arch Chapter, both 1 and 61, $51.... Omaha #1 Cryptic Masons, remains $38.... Mt Calvary #1 Knights Templar remains $50 Total York Rite 3 bodies $139 Letters will go out October 15th +/- 3 days When the letters go out I expect to have dues cards on hand for York Rite....Lodge cards should be available by the 1st week of November.

How to Set up Volunteer Work

Volunteer work can be very fulfilling to the members of the organization that provides it and extremely helpful to the organization that receives it. In just a few simple steps you can become proficient at coordinating a successful volunteer work event! For more ease of planning, brainstorm some organizations that need help and pick the one that you like best. Get a Point of Contact (POC) for the one you want to help. Discuss with your POC the work they want done. Decide whether or not it is possible/feasible for your group to complete it and how long it will take. Maybe you can only complete part of it or come back and finish at a later date. Don’t forget to find out if any special skills or tools are required. In order to schedule your event, plan the date that works best with the POC. Sell the event/idea to your group and solicit volunteers - the more the merrier. If you don’t have enough folks to get the work done, think about merging with another group. If you have too many volunteers, count yourself lucky, split them into teams, and tackle another event. Get started by advertising the event in your group’s newsletter, on facebook, and through other local communication venues. Arrange who will provide for water, food, and any additional items needed; then arrive early for final coordination with your POC. Take ‘before’ pictures of the areas to be worked on. It will help tell the story when the work is done.

For final preparation, divide the tasks based on the number of volunteers and their skillsets; match people’s strengths and desires with the work to be done. Take a group photo once everyone arrives, before they get dirty/sweaty from working. Don’t forget to have a First Aid Kit and give a safety brief; it doesn’t have to be drawn out, but nothing spoils an event like an unprepared for emergency. Execute your plan, organize the volunteers into teams and give them fun names. If you have a large group with many tasks, you can assign team leaders to alleviate the burden of directing everyone. Set your folks to work and be sure to check-in with each of them, providing positive feedback to help keep them motivated. Take pictures of volunteers working and pitch in a little bit with each group. In order to wrap it all up, take 'after' pictures of all the great work your group completed. Don’t forget to thank everyone involved. Shortly after the work is done and while the event is still fresh in your mind, do a write-up/summary. Add the pictures: before, during, and after and share them out. You can send it to the POC, post it in your group’s newsletter, and with local media outlets.

Yours in Masonry, Adam Cejka Senior Deacon Papillion Lodge #39

Coffee on the Square Okay, so there wasn’t a report on COTS for August. I’ll try to recap a bit of it before I go to the September Meeting. You have been apprised of the 50 and 60 year pins that were awarded and was the focal point of the August meeting. Twenty one members and friends attended the meeting. A delicious breakfast was served and the usual order of business was conducted. Now on to the September Meeting. Once again it was a very special meeting. Worshipful Brother Jonathon Paz presented a 60 year pin to our esteemed Worshipful Brother Eugene Fischbach. Nineteen members and friends were present to witness the Ceremony. Brother Gene and Cullen have had a longstanding relationship in Papillion Lodge and Brother Gene requested that Cullen attach his pin on

his lapel, What an honor! Thank you Gene! Worshipful Brother Gene thanked the Lodge and the brethren thereof and recalled some of his Masonic experiences during the last 60 years. The balance of the meeting consisted of a hearty breakfast, a review of forthcoming events and discussing Masonic History. We are looking forward to Papillion Lodge meeting at the Nebraska Masonic Home on September 12, Until next month, I’ll be racing the motor!

BBQ & Tailgate Party On Sunday September 17th we held our annual BBQ fundraiser. This year, WB Glenn wanted to have an NFL tailgate party in conjunction with the BBQ. We brought in a projector, and showed a football game on the back wall throughout the luncheon.

The festivities began the night before when several brothers got together to prepare all of the brisket and pork. They slow-cooked it on the grills throughout the night and into the next morning. The meal turned out fantastic. The brisket was cooked to perfection, and the pulled pork was moist and delicious. I heard a great deal of compliments on the meal, and I’m sure that everyone went home full and happy.

Attendance at the event was pretty much on par with attendance over the past few years. The difference this year was that we did significantly more advertising than in recent years. Unfortunately, the advertising was completely ineffective. Of particular disappointment was two months of advertising in the Hot Sands shrine magazine which

cost too much and produced absolutely no results. I certainly won’t be making that mistake again. Other than lackluster results from advertising, the BBQ was a great success. Having it combined with a good sporting event was an excellent idea, and I’m looking forward to similar events in the future. I would like to thank WB Glenn Lewis and WB Patrick Berry (and anyone else who helped) for all of the hard work on prep. Also a big thank you to WB Carl, B Ken, B Curtis, WB Jonathan, WB Noland, and B Bob for their hard work at the event. Additionally, a huge thank you to Jesse Lewis for all of her help!
