Words of Friendship
A Word from the Pastor
Dear Friends,
One of the things I love about Friendship is the way this church cares for each other. When
one of our members is struggling or hurting, there are usually many volunteers to help in any
way that they can.
As we move into the month of May, let’s keep our hearts and prayers focused on how we
can extend that care out into the community. Look around our community and ask where
people might need the presence and help of Friendship Church. Jesus’ ministry was about
going out into the world—not waiting for people to come to Him—and giving them love and
care and grace. How might we do the same?
This is one of the questions we have been asking ourselves as a session. As church
leadership we want to be ready when the world comes to us, but more importantly, we want
to be ready to go out into the world!
Grace and peace to you,
Rev. Tara Bulger

“Veni Creator Spiritus”
“Veni Creator Spiritus” (Come Holy Spirit) is a hymn dating from the 9th century which, as
an invocation of the Holy Spirit, is traditionally sung during the liturgical celebration of the feast of
Pentecost. It is also sung at solemn occasions such as the consecration of bishops, ordination of
priests, dedication of churches, openings of synods and coronations of kings.
The hymn has been incorporated in diverse musical settings. Martin Luther used the original
Gregorian chant (see above) as the basis for his hymn “Komm, Gott Schöpfer” in 1524. Other
noteworthy adaptations include those by French composers Hector Berlioz (a motet for women’s
voices, 1888) and Maurice Durufle (symphonic organ piece, 1930); German composers Gustav
Mahler (Symphony no. 8, 1907) and Paul Hindemith (Organ Concerto, 1963); and Polish composer
Krzysztok Penderecki (motet for mixed voices, 1987).
The text of “Veni Creator Spiritus” is believed to have been written by Rabanus Maurus
(780-856), a Benedictine abbot, theologian and scholar whose work contributed so much to the
development of German language and literature that he received the title “Praeceptor
Germaniae” (Teacher of Germany).
In 803 Rabanus became director of the monastic school of Fulda (near modern Frankfurt-am-
Main), and developed it into a leading center of learning; the manuscripts and works of art that he
collected made Fulda one of the richest conservatories in western Europe. Under Rabanus, Fulda
enlarged its abbey structures, which were decorated by his own art students. Rabanus also gained a
reputation for social concerns, and reportedly he was responsible for preventing the starvation of
hundreds during the famine of 850.
Rabanus believed that the arts and sciences were a necessary means of communicating
Christian belief to the Germans, and so wrote a number of treatises and compendiums that
synthesized intellectual history from classical and early Christian authors up to the 9th century. His
most famous work is De rerum naturis (Of the nature of things), an encyclopedia in twenty-two
books; Rabanus also wrote treatises on education and grammar and commentaries on the Bible.
Since the English Reformation in the 16th century, there have been more than fifty English
translations of “Veni Creator Spiritus.” The version in the Presbyterian hymnal (no. 125) was
written by John Cosin for the coronation of Charles I in 1625. Cosin’s translation has been used at
every English coronation since. Its first verse is:
Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire, and lighten with celestial fire.
Thou the anointing Spirit art, who dost thy sevenfold gifts impart.

Cosin (1594-1672) was a bishop, theologian and liturgist whose scholarly promotion of
traditional worship, doctrine and architecture has established him as one of the significant
figures in the history of the Church of England. In 1627 he wrote the famed Collection of
Private Devotions at the request of Charles I for a daily prayer book at court.
Cosin was exiled in Paris during the Puritan Commonwealth government, but upon the
Restoration of Charles II in 1660, he was made bishop of Durham Cathedral. At the Savoy
Conference in 1661, Cosin endeavored to reconcile the Presbyterian and Puritan factions in the
revision of the Book of Common Prayer, which was to become the standard of Anglican
worship. During his administration of Durham Cathedral, Cosin oversaw the creation of some
of the outstanding examples of neo-Gothic carvings and furnishings that are extant in England.

The “April showers” contributed to a very wet
Wilderness Survival camping weekend for the Boy
Scouts, who nonetheless “thrived and survived” in
our annual weekend challenge, in which the Scout
teams made and slept in their own shelters, cooked
food with no utensils, started fires with no matches,
and otherwise demonstrated their Scouting skills.
While the grounds were wet, our Scouts kept a
positive mental attitude, and successfully started fires with batteries/steel wool and with flint and steel;
caught fish; made baskets from wild grape vines; honed their tomahawk throwing skills; demonstrated
ground-to-air signals; boiled water in an orange peel; and more!
While the rainy weather cancelled Pack 149’s scheduled rocket launch
and Pack meeting, they are gearing up for the annual Blue and Gold
ceremony on May 8, where the Cub Scouts will conclude their
program year and celebrate the Cubs’ accomplishments.
In April, one patrol also did a day hike at the Botanical Garden, and
several members of the Order of the Arrow attended the regional
“Conclave” in Rome, Georgia. Troop 149’s May camping trip will be
at nearby Lake Oglethorpe, and focuses on sports and games, plus
(weather permitting) boating and fishing. And of course, we are
getting ever closer to this summer’s adventure, sailing and snorkeling
in the Bahamas!
At meetings, the Scouts focused on “wilderness survival” skills during
April, as well as physical fitness, and the Stamp Collecting and
Communication merit badges. On May 9, troops across the entire Boy
Scout Council will be conducting community service projects; Troop 149 will do a trash cleanup along our
“Adopt-A-Mile” section on Norton Road. We also have two Scouts
who have completed all their requirements for the rank of Eagle
Scout, and will be
going through their
district Board of
Review later in May.
Thanks for your
continued support of
the Boy Scout Troop,
Venturing Crew, and
Cub Scout Pack.
