Using Zoom
There are times during meetings and get-togethers when we need to mute/unmute ourselves. The mute button can be found at the lower left of your computer screen. If you have problems, Diana McHenry, our host, will be there to help. (Dial *6 to unmute/mute yourself on your phone). It is advised that participants use the Speaker View (fills your computer screen with only the speaker’s face/presentation) rather than the Gallery View (many small windows of all the participants’ faces) during presentions. The View button where you can toggle between these two options is in the upper right on the Zoom window on most computers (it may be in a different place on a smartphone or tablet).
Hangout / Happy Hour Diana McHenry
We’ll continue to meet via
Zoom on Mondays at 6 p.m. through
the winter and spring! Branch
members will receive their email
invitation each Monday morning.
Other than Book Group nights (1/18,
2/15, 3/15, 4/19, 5/17), our Monday
meetings on Zoom will be a time to
catch up with each other and chat.
If you’d like to be removed
from the Zoom meeting email list,
please let me know. See you in the
computer!

Born a Crime: Stories from a South
African Childhood
by Trevor Noah
Trevor Noah’s unlikely path from
apartheid South Africa to the desk
of The Daily Show began with a
criminal act: his birth. Trevor was born
to a white Swiss father and a black
Xhosa mother at a time when such a
union was punishable by five years in
prison. Living proof of his parents’
indiscretion, Trevor was kept mostly
indoors for the earliest years of his life,
bound by the extreme and often absurd
measures his mother took to hide him
from a government that could, at any
moment, steal him away. Finally
liberated by the end of South Africa’s
tyrannical white rule, Trevor and his
mother set forth on a grand adventure,
living openly and freely and embracing
the opportunities won by a centuries-
long struggle.
Born a Crime is the story of a
mischievous young boy who grows into
a restless young man as he struggles to
find himself in a world where he was
never supposed to exist. It is also the
story of that young man’s relationship
with his fearless, rebellious, and
fervently religious mother—his
teammate, a woman determined to save
her son from the cycle of poverty,
violence, and abuse that would
ultimately threaten her own life.
The stories collected here are by turns
hilarious, dramatic, and deeply
affecting. Whether subsisting on
caterpillars for dinner during hard
times, being thrown from a moving car
during an attempted kidnapping, or just
trying to survive the life-and-death
pitfalls of dating in high school, Trevor
illuminates his curious world with an
incisive wit and unflinching honesty. His
stories weave together to form a moving
and searingly funny portrait of a boy
making his way through a damaged
world in a dangerous time, armed only
with a keen sense of humor and a
mother’s unconventional, unconditional
love.

WISE2 Women in Winchester
• Sherry Lloyd has recently completed hundreds of hand sewn face masks with a variety of Scrappy Apple
fabrics for donations to the Winchester Medical Center, the Tri Sigma Scholarship Foundation and the
March of Dimes.
• Heidi Colberg was mentioned in The Winchester Star article on December 24, 2020, concerning
luminarias in Whittier Acres. Heidi and her husband, David, offered their yard as a place to store the sand
that filled more than 6000 luminarias to line the streets as a Christmas tradition in Winchester. Jane
Parrish has also been involved with this project for many years.
• Betty Orndoff is doing better and has been able to join us on Monday nights for the Zoom Hangout
/Happy Hour. We hope she continues to improve.
• Mary Froehlich has been a patient in the Winchester Medical Center. Our thoughts are definitely with
Mary and her family.
AAUW@SU Rosemary Green
Beth Dickman, President of
AAUW@SU, shared her thoughts
on participating with AAUW on
the Shenandoah University
campus. Beth graduates this
month with a BS in Exercise
Science, and then she is on to
graduate school!
I had never heard about
AAUW@SU until I was invited to
the etiquette dinner at the
university president's house my
sophomore year. I met everyone
involved and I absolutely loved
the people as well as their
mission. I immediately wanted to
get involved and help advocate
for women in any way I could.
Throughout my experience with
AAUW@SU as a member and
then the president I have learned
so much about how to be a leader
and how to take initiative to make
change. I really enjoyed working
on the Socks of Love event as we
collected donations for the local
women's shelter then stuffed the
socks so others could have
something warm for the winter
months. I just completed my
bachelors of science and plan to
go to graduate school next fall to
get my doctorate in physical
therapy. I can't want to utilize
everything I learned in my
AAUW@SU experience and
apply it to my career as well as
my future life.
Thanks for everything,
Beth
