This thesis explores the relationship between Mass, Volume, and Void. The investigation focuses on the differing ways to inhabit these spaces and the procession through them. These conditions are exhibited in a vertical manifestation of a typical street, a vertical streetscape.

A simple terrace organization provides maximum views for each room and creates another level of inhabitation, the roofs of each unit. Natural light floods through the prominent skylights and a thin reveal between the ceiling and wall.

A single volume is manipulated in a way that ultimately increases its surface area, thereby allowing a greater amount of daylight to penetrate the interior. Separating the volume into three forms also allows for clear organization of the program, traditional stacks occupying two volumes, and large public reading spaces in the last volume. The volumes are then raised above the site by two connecting cores that offer structural and circulatory support. The building is wrapped in a screen, in order to keep the visual pureness of the volumes and to control the day lighting.

Exterior Rendering

Self imposed study of the archetypal house form. The simple form is manipulated by geometric subtraction, leaving an open public and closed private realm in the house. A typical chimney is transformed into a light well containing the circulation. Light wells in the basement reinvent a typically forgotten space.
