Welcome to Ascend Canada’s 2016 Fall Conference.Every year, this is the time to celebrate what we’ve achieved and look ahead to build on our successes.

In just a few short years, our organization has built a network of influential leaders across Canada. Together with our sponsors and members, we continue to break down barriers and inspire action toward a more inclusive corporate Canada.

In the past year, our successes include:

• Growing our membership and welcoming new sponsors.

• Creating Student Chapters to build a pipeline of future leaders.

• Proudly launching the Chief Inclusiveness Officer forum to help organizations move the dial on diversity and inclusion.

While we have amazing momentum heading into 2017, we need to remember that we can’t achieve our objectives alone. With our mission to inspire action toward a more inclusive corporate Canada, our allies are essential to our success. Strong networks are critical in driving professional and organizational success. Therefore, this year’s conference, “Work Together, Soar Together,” will focus on collaboration and partnership with champions and allies to develop Pan-Asian leaders in the workplace.

With a goal to inspire action toward a more inclusive corporate Canada, this year’s conference will include panel discussions and workshops with influential leaders from different backgrounds discussing the impact of strong networks in driving professional and organizational success.

I hope you also take full advantage of the chance to mingle, learn, and connect with some of the top and future Pan-Asian business leaders in attendance.

Above all, I hope you have an enjoyable conference as we celebrate all that Ascend Canada's members, volunteers, executive sponsors, and partners have achieved over the past year. We truly did work together and soar together to get to where we are today and the future looks more promising and brighter than ever.

Workshop #1

Part 1: Why should I choose you?

What is it, at the core, that makes your business uniquely remarkable?

Clarity about who you are as an organization – what your “secret sauce” is – is the Holy Grail of every leader. Unfortunately, too many companies lack clarity about who they are, which causes a multitude of problems up and down the organization. Blueprint’s, public speaking presentation provides a simple solution to the clarity challenge faced by so many organizations. Having a clear, concise and compelling answer to the question "Why should I choose you?" – in 7 words or less – will give you complete clarity about who you are as a business and where you are going. It’s like the veil lifts and the fog clears for the leadership team and everyone else in the organization, and it will shape every area of the business, not just marketing and sales.

Ken began his career in Strategic Market Services at Vickers & Benson, a Canadian advertising agency. His first assignment was determining the “Treat of the Week” for McDonalds, which involved sitting with children and observing their behaviour when presented with different toys. As a result of his observations, he took on the role of negotiating with toy manufactures to secure the best price per toy for McDonalds.

Following V&B, Ken joined Harrison, Young, Pesonen & Newell, beginning as a media buyer, then planner, account director, director and then partner/president. During this time, he shifted how plans were created and media was bought. Through his clients, he bought rights to media properties (e.g., Blue Jays, Maple Leafs, Raptors) and created media properties (e.g., Rosie O’Donnell Show, Transformers). Clients included Labatt, Cara Foods (Swiss Chalet and Harvey’s), and American Express.

After leaving HYPN, Ken co-founded Blueprint Business Architecture with Ian Chamandy, to help organizations large and small – including charities, hospitals and universities – create clarity around who they are and their core value to their stakeholders.

Ken has an MBA from Harvard. He sits on the boards of Women’s Brain Health and Stratford Festival.

Workshop #2

Part 1: Internalizing Bias

Bias affects our experiences as leaders in three primary ways: we judge others based on our biases; we are on the receiving end of others’ biases; and we internalize the biases that come our way.

As professionals of colour, we are significantly impacted by this third aspect of bias – many of us have internalized the negative messages we continue to receive about who we are. This shows up in the form of self-limiting beliefs and behaviours including the impostor syndrome, negative self-talk, and hesitancy in reaching for opportunities, speaking up, and getting noticed – which in turn limits our advancement.

How can we unlearn the negative messages that we have come to believe about our abilities as leaders? Most importantly, how can we learn to bring our differences to bear while advancing in our careers?

Ritu Bhasin is a globally recognized leadership and inclusion expert with a mission to create a more inclusive and empowered world. Through her work, Ritu champions inclusive leadership within organizations and empowers women and diverse professionals to choose authenticity while achieving success. Ritu has won numerous awards for her efforts, including the City of Toronto’s William P. Hubbard Award for Race Relations in 2014. Her first book will be released in 2017.

BMO brand toolkit: Our visual style

Our logos don’t work alone to shape what looks “unmistakably BMO.”

See the BMO brand toolkit: Our logos and identifiers for more information on our logos.

Logos Colours Fonts Graphic elements Photography

Together with our brand building blocks, our logos inspire the foundation that our visual style builds off of.

When we use the elements of our visual style consistently across our entire organization – and across all touchpoints – we will together be creating a powerful cumulative impression. It’s an impression that will have a much greater impact than any single item. Each group within BMO, each initiative, each channel will reinforce the others.

Our visual style elements can be divided into the four key categories shown here. Sometimes we only work with one or two of these. Other times, we bring them all together.

How we work with these elements in a way that maintains clear and straightforward, brand-aligned communication is something that takes practice and dialogue. By bringing your interpretations and ideas forward, we can continue to shape and refine this system and find the right balance between a recognizable brand style and innovative, customer-inspired approaches.

Beyond our logos
