face mask applications and face fit Testing

medical face masks are recommended as ameans of source control, i.e. they decreasethe transmission of a virus by preventing thespread of respiratory droplets produced bycoughing or sneezing.

There are two types of medical face masks:Type I and Type II according to theirBacterial filtration Efficiency (BfE).The BfE determines the amount of infectiveagent retained by the facemask andtherefore directly relates to the numberof bacteria released through the maskand into the environment.

Type II masks are further divided accordingto their Splash Resistance Pressure whichdetermines the mask’s resistance level topotentially contaminated fluid splashes.

a Type IIR mask is splash resistant, theletter ‘R’ signifies splash resistance.

a Type II mask is not splash resistant.Splash resistance is required in clinicalsettings to protect the wearer againstsplashes of blood or bodily fluids.

Respirator masks (which means they aremade of a fabric designed to filter the air orimpurities) are based on a grading systemdo indicate how much protection they offerthe user.

ffP1 �

a ffP1 mask it is the first rung on theladder, which protects against materials inconcentrations up to 4x OEl or 4x aPf(assigned protection factor).

ffP2 �

Next is ffP2 and these offer moreprotection than ffP1, and protect againstmaterials at concentrations up to 12x OElor 10x aPf. They are the Europeanequivalent of the N95 respirator masks usedin the uSa and meet the guidance from theWorld health Organisation (WhO).

ffP3 �

These masks offer the highest level ofprotection and protect against materials inconcentrations up to 50x OEl or 20x aPf.This is substantially higher than ffP1 andthey can block both liquid and solidaerosols.

Current NhS guidelines stipulate ffP3 facemasks for virus and bacterial infectioncontrol when the contagion is spreadthrough coughing and sneezing (such as withthe Coronavirus). They are also often usedby healthcare professionals when handlinghazardous pharmaceutical chemicals.

RESPIRaTOR maSkSmEDICal maSkS

Since the Coronavirus pandemic many people are reaching for Personal ProtectiveEquipement, PPE, and in particular face masks as a form of protection. There aremany questions and often conflicting advice.

We always recommend a full risk assessment should be carried out in the workplacein line with hSE guidelines.

as well as the level of protection that eachkind of mask offers, there are also somedesign elements that you may want toconsider.

uN-ValVED maSkSunvalved masks mean that the filtrationsystem is built into the fabric, and thereforecan be lightweight and discreet. This canmake the mask more comfortable to wearas they are non-bulky and don’t feel heavyon the face.

ValVED maSkSThe alternative to an unvalued mask is avalved one. although this can make themask slightly bulkier and heavier, it allowsair to be let out of the mask. Valved masksare typically less sweaty and stuffy, whichcan make them more breathable and oftenmore comfortable to wear.

With all the masks referenced above thewearer must be clean shaven to ensurethey get the maximum seal possible aroundthe face.

With any ffP mask, half mask or full-facemask the wearer should have been face fittested to the mask as per the hSEguidelines.

Training on how to fit the mask correctlyshould be performed either with by a supplychain partner, the manufacturer or face fittesting independent companies operate.

The face fit testing can be done by twomethods, qualitative or quantitative.The quantitative (PortaCount) method canbe used to fit test all types of tight-fittingmasks including disposable, half and fullface masks.

The quantitative tests give an objectiveassessment of facial fit and provide a directnumerical result called a fit factor.

another option to consider is a reusable mask, and the these masks are used witha P3 filter fitted. These masks can be used more than once, and you could get upto 4 weeks use out on one set of filters. This of course would depend on many offactors such as concentration levels of the contaminate and work rate. With thistype of mask you would also need to keep a record which includes, identification ofthe mask, daily checks, maintenance and critically when they filters have beenchanged to compile with the hSE regulations.
