Dear Friend,

We are so grateful for everything you have done to support your children and grandmothers in Uganda. You are providing 656 HIV/AIDS orphans with free education, two meals every school day, school uniforms, shoes, and everything else they need for success.

You are touching the lives of 7,005 grandmothers and their collective 43,000 grandchildren through the Grandmother Project. This year you will give your grandmothers new homes to shelter them from the rain, new, safe kitchens and latrines, micro-finance loans to start businesses and budgeting support, vocational and leadership training, and the emotional support of a community in their Granny Groups.

You are a gift to the community. You are providing clean water, healthcare, employment, and two libraries with internet access.

Without you none of these things would be possible. Your children would still be at home dreaming of a miracle that would send them to school. Your grandmothers would still be clutching

their grandchildren during sleepless nights, standing in the corner of their crumbling homes as rain poured through their roofs. Your love is reaching across the ocean to comfort them.

You are the reason that Nyaka can reach more grandmothers and HIV/AIDS orphans every year!

With Gratitude,

Artistic rendering of completed secondary school

Secondary school under construction.

We are offering naming opportunities for pledges and gifts for donors who are ready to make a long term commitment to the success of Nyaka students. To become an investor in futures of your children, contact our Major Gifts Officer, Tizita Assefa at (517) 575-6623 or tizita @nyakaschool.org.

The Nyaka Secondary and Vocational School The Nyaka Secondary and Vocational School is currently under construction in the village of Nyakagyezi. Everyone in Nyakagyezi is so excited to see the walls going up. Not only is the construction good for the local economy, but the secondary school represents a promise to the community. Nyaka is dedicated to helping HIV/AIDS orphans go to school.

The Secondary and Vocational School means that girls and boys can stay closer to home. Many will be able to stay with their grandmothers to provide badly needed support with daily chores. The location near the Blue Lupin Library means that all secondary school students will have access to computers to improve their computer literacy and allow them to access the internet. This is so vital to helping them prepare for future careers.

By keeping the students close to home, we will be able to provide additional supports like daily tutoring and drastically cut the cost of their education. That means more children will have access to a quality education!

Partner foundations and compassionate individuals like you have helped us raise 43% of our goal to build the school! We still need a lot of support. Help us keep our promise to the community and your children.

We are always working to reduce our overhead costs so that as much of your money as possible can go directly to your Nyaka students and

grandmothers. We are proud to tell you that 82% of your donations go right to programming. That means more homes for grandmothers, more children in school, more books in your libraries, and more access to opportunity for everyone.

Our 2013 Annual Report gives a more in depth view of how we are investing your gifts into the lives of your Nyaka students and grandmothers. This is available to view on our website at www.nyakaschool.org. To receive your own copy, please contact our office at [email protected] or call us at (517) 575-6623.

In rural, Southwest Uganda there are 36,000 people for every doctor. Many people cannot afford to travel to the doctor or pay the medical costs. As a result, women often give birth at home without any medical attention. Women are much more likely to die in childbirth (every day 13 women will die from pregnancy complications) and child mortality is still very high (13.5% of children will die before the age of 5). Additionally, people living with HIV/AIDS may go untreated or untested for years, spreading the deadly disease. The new infection rate of HIV/AIDS has dropped dramatically in the last decade to 7.4% but there is still great need for education and testing.

The healthcare, medicine, vaccines, and HIV/AIDS testing you provide means that thousands of people in the communities you serve will not have to travel miles to get the care they need. Last year, you treated 3,734 of your students, grandmothers, and community members through the Mummy Drayton Clinic and Kutamba Primary School. That’s 3,734 people who would have had to travel for miles to see an expensive doctor. So far this year, you have already treated 3,105 people. That’s 83% of the number of people who were seen in all of 2013! More people are accessing healthcare in your communities, which means that child and maternal death, HIV/AIDS infections, Malaria, and other illnesses will be reduced and treated. Student Highlight Bonietor, 19 years old Bonietor is a Senior 6 student at Immaculate Heart Girl's School. Her education is sponsored by Beautiful World Canada. She is part of the pioneer class of Nyaka students who will be heading off to University after the end of the 2014 school year. Before she came to the Blue Lupin Library, the only books she had to read were her textbooks. Bonietor loves her classes but she wanted to learn about the world around her. At the library she could access newspapers and the internet to learn about what was happening in Uganda and the world. Bonietor told us “I have started performing better in my weak subjects, which will help me a lot when my exams come at the end of the year.”

Bonietor wants to be a doctor after she graduates. She told us “I am a student and I am working hard to pass my exams so as to help other people who are in need.” Because of you, Bonietor has the tools she needs to achieve her goals!

You are Building Futures Last year You built 37 homes (includes a house, kitchen and pit latrine), 6 houses, 20 kitchens, and 10 pit latrines for grandmothers in need like Clemensia. This year you are on track to build even more! With your help, we will work towards our goal to ensure no grandmother or child will live in unsafe houses, cooking in crumbling kitchens, or risk illness from unsanitary pit latrines. To learn more about the many ways you are supporting your grandmothers, visit our website, www.nyakaschool.org

Grandmother Story Clemensia, 73 years old

Clemensia is raising two children. They are one of the families you have saved. Their home, kitchen, and pit latrine were all in grave need of replacement. Clemensia told us “we were always sickly due to the leaking structure. I had no kitchen and I sometimes went hungry during the rainy season.”

You built a complete new home for Clemensia and her grandchildren. She is so grateful for the gift you have given her family. She said: “My life has greatly changed because I no longer suffer from diseases that were attacking my family as result of coldness. These days I also cook supper because of the good kitchen I received from Nyaka. The sanitation in my home has improved as a result of the pit latrine I received and the whole community is no longer scared of diseases that were likely to break out due to my lack of a pit latrine.”
