TUTORIAL
Working With Sketch ToolsLearning Objectives
After completing this tutorial, you will be able to:
Construct lines and arcs using the Line tool
• Construct arcs using the Arc tool
• Construct circles using the Circle tool
• Construct rectangles using the Rectangle tool
•
Construct polygons using the Polygon tool
Required Competencies
Before starting this tutorial, you should have been able to:
• Understand the role of sketching
• Set up the sketching environment
• Understand the concepts of constraining and dimensioning sketches
Construct l ines and arcs w ith the Line tool
A. Lines
1. Begin a new standard.ipt part file on the default XY plane.
2. Click the Line tool on the Sketch toolbar.

3. Click in the graphics area to start the line segment from point A and click
again to terminate it at point B.

4. Continue dragging horizontally across, click at point C and repeat
vertically up to point D.

5. Right-click and select Done to finish.

B. Arcs
1. Select the Line tool on the Sketch toolbar. Click and hold the endpoint
D of the previously constructed geometry, then drag upward and to the right to
create Arc 1.

2. Release and repeat by changing direction. Hold the left mouse button
down and keep dragging to create Arc 2. Right-click and select Done to finish.

Construct arcs with the Arc tool
A. Three point arc
1. Begin a new standard.ipt part file on the default XY
plane.
2. Click the Three Point Arc tool on the Sketch toolbar.

3. Click in the graphics area to set the locations of the First , Second and
Third points on the Arc.

4. Right-click and select Done to finish.

B. Center point arc
1. Start a new file, click the down arrow by the Arc tool on the Sketch
toolbar and select the Center Point Arc option.

2. Click in the graphics area to specify the following:
a. The location of the Center of the arc
b. The Radius and the Beginning of the arc
c. The End of the arc

3. Right-click and select Done to finish.

C. Tangent arc
Construct an arc tangent to the one created in step B.2 above.
1. Click the down arrow by the Arc tool on the Sketch toolbar and select
the Tangent Arc option.

2. Click on endpoint A to specify the beginning of the second arc and then
click to specify its radius and end.

3. Click Esc to finish.

Construct circles w ith the Circle tool
A. Center point circle
1. Start a new file, click the down arrow by the Circle tool on the Sketch toolbar and select the Center point circle option.

2. Click in the graphics area to specify the following:
a. The location of the Center of the circle
b. The Radius of the circle

B. Tangent circle-Circle tangent to three given lines
1. Use the line tool to construct triangle ABC by picking random points A , B ,
and C in the graphics area as shown in Figure 15.

2. Click the down arrow by the Circle tool on the Sketch toolbar and select
the Tangent circle option

Construct rectangles using the Rectangle tool
A. Two point rectangle- Two corners across the diagonal
1. Click the down arrow by the Rectangle tool on the Sketch toolbar and
select the Two point rectangle option.

2. Click in the graphics area to specify the following:
a. The location of one corner of the rectangle
b. Drag to the location of the diagonally opposite corner

B. Three point rectangle
1. Click the down arrow by the Rectangle tool on the Sketch toolbar and
select the Three point rectangle option.

shown below.

1. Click the Polygon tool
on the Sketch toolbar

2. Select the Inscribed option and type the desired number of sides. Specifythe locations of the center and of one corner.

B. Circumscribed about a circle
1. Select the Circumscribed option and type the desired number of sides. Specifythe locations of the center and of the midpoint of an edge.
