Importing sound files

- Use a USB cable or a card to import your sound files from your recorder to the computer - Once files are on the computer, you can access them via the Browser portion of Soundtrack Pro

- All imported audio files start off in the Waveform Editor - Used to cut and fine-tune individual clips of audio before adding them to a multi-track sound

- Can easily select portions of audio to alter

- Allows you to apply special effects to audio

- Place markers at specific times in the clip; allows you to select all of the audio between the markers

Click on the New Project icon to start a new multitrack project

- Opens up the new project in a separate tab

- Icon for multitrack projects looks like a document, and the icon for waveform projects looks like a sound wave

- Can click between them freely

- To add a waveform to the multitrack project, drag the file from the browser window in the lower right-hand corner into one of the layers when the project is open.

- You can layer different sounds on top of one another, similar to how layers in Photoshop work.

- Click on the track name to rename it- Can change the color/icon to more easily identify tracks- Volume slider allows you to change the volume of an individual audio track- Pan adjust allows you to shift more of the sound to the left or to the right- Bypass effect turns off special effects for the track- “R” sets the audio track to be the target for recordings- “M” mutes the track- “S” mutes all other tracks except for that one

- To trim a clip, move your mouse cursor to the edge of an audio clip, and a bracket that looks like a staple with a left and right arrow will appear. Click and drag the edge of the clip to the point you want to trim the clip.

- To cut or razor a clip, first select the razor tool in the top left corner of the Project Window. Then move your mouse cursor over the audio clip and press the mouse button at the point where you want to separate the clip. Then select the arrow icon and move the parts of the clip around or delete them.   

- Use automatic fades to ease transitions into and out of a clip, as well as to transition between two different clips.

- To create a fade at the beginning or end of a clip, position the cursor in the upper left (for beginning) or upper right (for end) corners of the track, until you see an envelope appear. Click and drag to create the fade effect.

- Double-click the fade selection to see different fade options.

- To use crossfades between two clips, make sure the left button is selected as indicted below.

- Drag one clip on top of another, and it will automatically insert a crossfade.

- Just like the other fades, you can select different fade types.

- Using the truncate setting overwrites one clip over another.

- To work with the sound envelope, click on the arrow to the left of the name of the track.

- Allows you to adjust the volume level inside the sound clip.

- You can double-click to create different points at which you want to adjust the audio.

- Save as an AIFF file and add to folder containing photos

Set scratch disk to computer’s hard drive while you work on it

Things to remember

- Be absolutely sure to copy all files that you’ve worked on to your external hard drive after you’re done, or else you’ll lose them when you log out!

- When you first begin working on a project, create a clearly-labeled folder on your Desktop and copy all of the files you’re working with from your external hard drive to that folder.

- Develop a naming convention to keep files organized and avoid confusion.

- Keep your edited files separate from your originals, just in case you want to go back.

- Simply drag and drop the files from the browser pane tothe main editing area

- Can drag files to different layers on top (for photos and video) and on bottom (for audio), or onto the samelayers

- Audio files should be in AIFF format in order to properlyfunction, otherwise you may get a beeping sound whenplaying your clip back
