Workplace Health & Safety
The Workplace Health & Safety Program has been
developed to ensure compliance with relevant
legislation and to also meet the needs of each of our
facilities.
So how do we as Health Care Facilities ensure
compliance with Legislation?
Workplace Health & Safety
We do that by adhering to the Workplace Health &
Safety Act 2011 and Regulations 2011 and the
various Codes of Practice.
National Harmonisation Laws came into practice from
the 01/01/2012 where Australia has been working
toward ALL states and Territories having the same
OH&S laws. Where possible these will remain exactly
the same all around Australia
The objective is to minimise problems with trying to
comply with nine different sets of laws
Workplace Health & Safety
The ACT is the umbrella or the big picture
The REGULATION is more detail with laws
The CODES OF PRACTICE give specific guidance
eg First Aid Code of Practice
AND
The STANDARDS provide guidance documents and
support
Workplace Health & Safety
As an employee you are obliged to:
To ensure their own health and safety and act responsibly.
Use the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment where provided
To ensure the health and safety of each of their co-workers eg: wipe up/or notify someone that there is a spill on the floor if you find it. Place ‘wet floor signs’ around it.
Workplace Health & Safety
The Employer also has obligations to ensure:
Health and Safety of each worker in the facility
Also to provide health and safety to other people who
are not workers – clients/visitors/ general public
Provide safe plant and equipment
Provide training to workers
Chemical & Hazardous
Substances Management Mercy Health and Aged Care Central Queensland have
adopted the CHEMWATCH online program for the
management of Chemicals and Hazardous substances.
This program is available through the Intranet on the
Applications tab with the following icon. The user clicks on
the icon which directs you to the program you then type in
the chemical name and press enter, the program will then
search and provide the SDS (Safety Data Sheet) which tells
you the relevant information about the product
Chemical & Hazardous
Substances Management
The WH&S Department conducts risk assessments
on hazardous substances. The WH&S Department
must be notified of any chemicals that are required to
be brought into the facilities for whatever reason i.e.
trial similar product etc, this is imperative to ensure we
are meeting our obligations and not putting staff and
patients and visitors at risk of an exposure.
Staff are not to bring in their own substances and use
them

What is a
Risk Management System A computer program that enables all staff to report and classify incidents/events & hazards. As soon as you submit your event, it goes directly to your Manager to flag that there is an incident there for them to review. At Mercy Health we use RISKMAN to record/report the following:
Incidents, events, hazards
Compliments, Complaints, Ideas, Suggestion
Risk Management System -
Feedback A Complaint is an expression of dissatisfaction or
concerns about a health care service made by patients,
carers, staff, community. A complaint maybe made in
person, by phone, fax, email or in writing.
Complaints are “opportunities’ to improve and provide the
best possible care and service.
• Compliments
• Complaints
• Ideas
• Suggestions
Incident Reporting System
RISKMAN is accessible by an individual password
set up. This password never expires and it is your
personal password.
It records ALL of the incidents, near misses or
hazards that occur within the facility whether it be
environmental or person related
Staff Rehabilitation Return
to Work Program
Aim of the Program – to provide rehabilitation and return to work support
to ensure the safe return to work for all staff members whether it is a
Work or Non-Work related injury and illness
All injuries that affect your work need to be reported to the Rehabilitation
& Return to Work Coordinator and in conjunction with Doctors, your Area
Manager and RTW coordinator a Suitable Duties Plan will be developed.
Reporting Methods – When you sustain an injury at work it must be
reported to your Supervisor/Manager and you must log a report on the
RiskMan incident reporting system, your Manager will then follow-up as
necessary and contact the Return to Work Coordinator to assist with
completion of paperwork and any other necessary arrangements.
