“Wellness refers to programs designed to improve the health and well-being of employees (and their families), in order to enhance organizational performance and reduce costs. Wellness programs typically address specific behaviors and health risk factors, such as poor nutrition, physical inactivity, stress, obesity, and smoking. These factors commonly lead to serious and expensive health problems and have a negative impact on workforce productivity. Wellness programs raise awareness, provide information and education, and offer incentives that encourage employees and their families to adopt healthier lifestyles. These initiatives are most successful in a workplace environment that promotes and supports health and well-being. Wellness programs also can help reduce the incidence and severity of chronic illnesses such as asthma, diabetes, and heart disease. Employers often integrate their wellness initiatives with chronic disease management programs to provide a continuum of healthy lifestyle support.” Working Well: A Global Survey of Workplace Wellness & Health Promotion Strategies, Buck Survey

“Wellness matters. For the third year in a row, companies on the list are focused on employee wellness. ‘Grappling with extreme increases in health care costs and having to pass more and more of those costs on to employees and their families, has led to an increased emphasis on preventative care and programs that can encourage a healthier diet and lifestyle,’ Gorman says. ‘Healthy employees are more productive and present at work, but also more productive and present in their personal lives as well.’ Employees should expect to see their companies do more to make them well, at least physically – on-site Zumba, meditation breaks, break rooms with more apples and water and less chips and soda. Employees can be rewarded for undergoing biometric screenings, losing weight or quitting smoking. Top 10 Workplace Trends for 2014

“In 2010, being absent from the job (absenteeism) or underperforming while working (presenteeism) caused productivity losses worth US$ 8.5 trillion due to mental ill-health and US$ 8.3 trillion due to cardiovascular disease. These numbers are expected to double by 2030.” World Economic Forum – Workplace Wellness Alliance

Top health Issues driving internationally surveyed companies: physical activity, stress, nutrition/healthy eating, high blood pressure, chronic disease, high cholesterol, workplace safety, obesity, work/life issues, depression/anxiety, tobacco use/smoking, psychosocial work environment, personal safety, sleep/fatigue, maternity/newborn health, substance abuse, and infectious diseases/AIDS/HIV. Buck Consultant’s 5th Global Workplace Wellness Survey

The importance of improving worker productivity and reducing presenteeism ranked between 71-90% across all internationally surveyed companies in Buck Consultant’s 5th Global Workplace Wellness Survey

Internal marketing, evaluation and program management, leadership and accountability will be key imperatives for the future success of workplace wellness. 2012 Rand Corp. Report, “A Review of the US Workplace Wellness Market”.

“The Corporate Wellness Services industry (in Canada) is in the growth stage of its industry life cycle. In the 10 years to 2019, industry value added (IVA), which measures the industry’s contribution to the overall economy, is forecast to increase at an annualized 7.3%. At the same time, GDP is projected to increase at an annualized 2.5%.
