Masking Fluid

Mask off inside roof lines and sides of houses and church as shown in the picture.

Sky

With a size 20 brush wet paper to edge and down to and in between buildings.

Mix Natural Orange – not too thick – twist into centre of sky and over the church. Mix Natural Violet and twist in at the top of the sky and above the buildings. With a piece of kitchen roll lift out highlights.

Snow Area

Wet the snow areas and use the same colours with the orange near the buildings and the purple colour following the pencil lines either side of the road.

Trees

Dampen paper between church and houses and into sky.

Use the Small Tree Brush and mix Natural Brown. Twist in trees between the buildings and into the sky. Pick up some Natural Grey and stipple in some dark at the side of the buildings. Scratch out the branches. Repeat at the back of the church and right side of houses.

Road

Mix Natural Violet with a size 12 brush

Start with the left side of the road - pull over horizontal lines – to the right side and pull back from the edge into the hill.

Gate Opening

With the Natural Violet darken the gate opening and pull out downhill

With a size 10 brush mix Natural Yellow and block in the garden wall and buildings. Avoid the top of the post box and the porch. Paint lighted windows and doorway with Natural Yellow Light and a number 6 brush. Let the light yellow spill onto the snow. Add a bit of Natural Grey to the Natural Yellow and paint in the church.

Post Box

Paint in the post box with a Cadmium Red and Alizarin Crimson mix avoiding the information panel and leaving the top white. Paint the bottom with a dark Natural Grey.

Mix Natural Grey shadow colour and paint a line just under the right side of the top and down the right side, fade over.

Roofs

Mix Natural Violet and with a number 6 brush paint the top edge of the roof on the first building – blend down – fade out.

Paint a line down the joining line of the left cottage and blend over.

Paint a few random lines down the church roof and water in.

Porch

Mix Natural Grey with Natural Brown and paint underneath the canopy and the supports.

Use this dark brown colour to darken under the trees and fade up.

When dry sandpaper over trees, road and roofs.

Shadows

Paint shadows over all the windows with Natural Grey.

On the left side of the window paint in a shape and blend over.

Paint in the shadow in the open doorway in the same way and drag out into the snow. Block in the closed door with Natural Brown.

When the windows are dry paint in the woodwork.

With a 10/12 brush and Natural Grey starting with the chimney on the gable end wall paint a line down the left side and blend over to the right – pull some lines onto the front wall for the brickwork.

Paint a line down the join between the two buildings – dampen off and fade away. Darken the left side chimney.

Paint a thick shadow under the eaves and missing the windows soften down. Paint in the shadow under the snow on the right side of the gable wall.

Church

Continue with shadows in Natural Grey. Paint a line down the left corner of the tower and fade over. Paint in the dark line under the eaves.

Bushes

With a Medium Tree Brush and Natural Brown mask off in front of the church with a piece of card and tap in the bushes. Mix Natural Grey and put shadows in at the bottom of the bushes. Tidy the bottom of the bushes with a damp number 6 brush .Add a few little bits of leaves at the top of the bushes. With a number 6 brush and the same colour pull some texture into the snow adding in some grasses etc.

Pull down a few dry brush reflection lines at the edge of the road. Use a small tree brush and Natural Brown to put the bushes between and in front of the buildings.

Stonework

Use a chisel brush and Natural Yellow to paint in stonework on the houses, church and garden wall Paint in bits of grey on garden wall coping stones and outline some of the stones in the wall and in the buildings.

Snow Details

Mix Natural Violet and scribble in tracks in the road.

On the hillside pull a wide line up rinse the brush and tap the surplus water off and fade away upwards.

Paint in shadows between the buildings and the corner wall and blend away, also at the back of the post box.

Right Side Bush

With the small Tree Brush, and using a card for a straight edge, stipple the bush in using Dark Natural Green. Add in some Natural Brown and spots of red.

Finishing Touches

Smoke from the chimney in Natural Grey wet in wet.

Fill in bell tower aperture and the clock on the side of the church. Paint a dark line under the eaves for guttering on the church and the

houses. Paint in the dark line on the church tower and the flag pole.

Use Opaque White for bits of snow on bushes etc. and icicles from the porch and the eaves,
