REPORT – CAPACITY BUILDING PROGRAMME – HAPPY CLASSROOM

Pursuant to the initiatives TAKEN BY THE Centre Of Excellence, CBSE, DPS Vasant Kunj conducted a

Capacity Building Workshop titled ‘Happy Classroom’ on 11th March, 2020. Mrs Minakshi Kushwaha,

Principal, Birla Vidya Niketan was the guest speaker. She conducted the workshop from 9am to 3.30pm

and was ably assisted by Mrs Mona Chopra, Academic Coordinator, Birla Vidya Niketan. Twenty three

teachers representing eleven schools from Delhi NCR participated.

The day was divided into three segments :

A- Happy Teachers Create Happy Classrooms.

    B- Exploring Happiness

    C- Strategies of Happy Classrooms

Under segment A ‘Happy Teachers Create Happy Classrooms’, the Emotional Intelligence of teachers was

stressed upon. An activity based on a Self Awareness scale was initiated wherein participants were provided

a situation and asked to rate themselves on certain parameters viz (a) the emotion they recognized (b) which

emotion affected their performance at work (c) awareness about their strengths and weaknesses and (d)

    the learning from that situation.

After Self Awareness, in descending order, came Self Management, Self Motivation, Relationship

    Management and Social Awareness.

It was realised that a smile, talking over an issue, visualising different perspectives, faculty meets to discuss

problems, effective communication etc helped teachers overcome some inherent barriers and feel happy

and satisfied. It was understood that most successful people managed their relationships well.

The Teacher’s Toolkit for Emotional Intelligence Regulation like STOPP, CARE, PLEASE were taken up in

    sufficient detail.

The challenges that teachers have to encounter were addressed. Some of the challenges were behavioural

for instance, discipline, distraction, lack of empathy and gratitude, dealing with adolescence issues,

channelizing the energies of students were dealt with.

An important comparison was made about behaviour and mis behaviour. The psychological reasons,

environmental justifications and biological factors for mis behaviour were identified. The conclusion to this

very common problem was attributed to the ability of the teacher to understand and accept weaknesses

and strengths of students, positive re-enforcements, strengthening the talents of students and bridging gaps.

Ms.Mona Chopra undertook Segment B-‘Exploring Happiness’. An activity based discussion brought the

conclusion that the formula to happiness was

    H=S+C+V

    Where:

    S-Biological/Genetic Set Point

    C-Conditions of Life

    V-Factors under Voluntary Control

  • The pathways to happiness as observed by teachers were: Gratitude, Forgiveness, Optimism, Empathy,

    Rational thoughts, Home-School Balance.

The last segment of the workshop was ‘Strategies Of Happy Classrooms’. Emphasis was laid on the belief

that teachers make all the difference to turn a classroom into a happy one. Every member in the teaching

community has to choose happiness over other emotions to make learning productive. They are expected

to make students feel comfortable, praise them for small achievements, for showing courage, have eye-

contact with every student, change the pattern of assignments, bring humour while teaching. Using different

methodologies ensures better learning. Learning by the story telling method was an important way to teach.

Activities based on Total Physical Response(TPR) includes group singing, role play, pantomime actions were

    also introduced.

The day long workshop was funfilled, activity oriented, interactive, informative and highly educative.

Teachers were awarded Certification of Participation and a group photograph was also taken.
