ABOUT CHRIST UNIVERSITY

The Workshop for Educators and Teachers is an initiative of the Department of Psychology to reach out to the community. The primary objective is to foster awareness among teachers about various issues related to students’ holistic development considering current trends and research in the field of Educational Psychology. The workshop is organised over two days and is designed to be experiential and interactive in nature.

In an increasingly global world, education has to meet the intellectual needs of students as well as develop youth who are prepared to live in a diverse society. As technological advancements transcend geographical boundaries and education has become a must for all, individual differences in physical and cognitive abilities, language, socioeconomic class and cultural, religious and ethnic distinctions are becoming increasingly important in the educational context. Hence schools around the world and especially in India are beginning to embrace these differences among their students.

In this context, education in schools needs to be a transformative learning experience with a two-fold purpose. The first purpose is to focus on students’ holistic development and empower them to take greater responsibility in their learning process; the second purpose is to create schools and classrooms that teach students to be more interconnected with a diverse world. In the bargain, we as educators mould students to be not only competent in subject knowledge but also sensitive and empathetic citizens who can understand and accommodate differences among people in society.

The workshop on “Creating Positive Learning Spaces” will focus on the following objectives: • To understand the concept of Diversity in Schools and classrooms. • To understand the meaning of student empowerment, positive life values and self-regard. • To explore classroom practices that deal with diversity and inclusiveness and promote student empowerment.

This year the Workshop for Teachers and Educators will be offered as a two-day workshop focussing on two broad topics namely: diversity in the classroom and student empowerment. The workshop will consist of multiple components that will be structured to engage the interest of the participants. To understand the challenges that teachers face due to the changing face of education in a global world, a group discussion will be initiated so that the sessions that follow could address a few of the issues raised. Each session will have a facilitator who will use both instructional and experiential methods to enable the participants to meet the objectives of the workshop. The resource persons for the workshop will be the faculty of the Department of Psychology who will bring their rich expertise and experiences to facilitate the workshop.

• Recognising diversity in schools and classrooms • Dealing with diversity in classrooms • Identifying children with special needs • Developing inclusive classrooms • Understanding student empowerment • Empowering students through positive life values and self-regard • Classroom practices to promote empowerment • Cultivating student empowerment through the teacher- parent partnership
