Context

The use of innovative technologies as well as the use of information and communication technologies in the attainment of higher levels social, economic and environmental development have gained increasing importance, and as such are key to the achievement of the SDGs and Agenda 2030. Such technologies have shown to harbor immense potential in generating the necessary momentum for broader action towards the achievement of the SDGs and in mobilizing the needed resources. Even more, these technologies find resonance amongst the key drivers of inclusive and sustainable development, namely young social entrepreneurs.

This workshop will serve to introduce and strengthen the understanding of how innovative technologies, such as digital currencies based on blockchain technology, as well as information and communication technologies can best contribute to the achievement of the SDGs and Agenda 2030, with particular focus on SDG 9. Furthermore the workshop aims to explore how these technologies can provide the necessary lever for social entrepreneurship, particularly by youth-led enterprises, considering the unmatched potential that entrepreneurship promotion and youth empowerment have in driving development and achieving the Agenda 2030.

A central hypothesis of the session is that an Agenda2030 Youth action marketplace infrastructure, based on blockchain technology and digital social currencies, is needed as a means of implementation and to facilitate the necessary mobilization and flow of local and global financial resources from different sources (public, private and philanthropic) towards youth led Agenda2030 actions. Youth will thereby be empowered to play a leading role in promoting inclusive and sustainable industrial development in a changing world.

Points of discussion:

● Highlight the role of youth social entrepreneurship as a key driver to achieving the Agenda 2030 and the SDGs;

● Discuss the potential of digital social currencies (based on blockchain technology) as enables of youth empowerment and social entrepreneurship, as well as for multi-stakeholder engagement in the achievement of the Agenda 2030; and map relevant expertise in this field;

● Discuss the concept and develop an implementation plan for an "Agenda2030 Youth Action Marketplace" to incentivize youth social entrepreneurship and mobilize the necessary financial and technological resources;

● Outline recommendations for UN inter-agency cooperation on social entrepreneurship capacity building in the context of Agenda2030 and UN System Wide Action Plan on Youth

5 Guiding Questions:

1. How can UN agencies, non-governmental actors, local and national public authorities and private sector create in a multi-stakeholder partnership framework a market for products and services of young people / social entrepreneurs who contribute to achievement of SDGs. (proposal of IAAI: "Agenda2030 Youth Action Marketplace" within GloCha Youth Empowerment Partnership)

2. How can there be introduced a new global-local digital social currency that integrates science based, transparent and participatory evaluation, and verification as well as monetary and non-monetary incentive mechanisms (incl. games) for facilitation of globally coordinated multistakeholder Agenda2030 action.

3. How can young social entrepreneurs get access to global financial resources in the field of philanthropy (e.g. The Giving Pledge) and climate change action (e.g. the 100 billion US$/year of the Green Climate Fund and certified emission reductions markets) as demand side of Agenda 2030 Youth Action products and services.

4. How can science (universities, research institutes and citizen science) help to build the knowledge base for questions 1-3
