1. Summary of Technical Report

S.G. Balekundri Institute of Technology, Belagavi, has organized one day workshop on Lean

manufacturing and process improvement on 22.01.2016. The objective of this workshop

was to bring the industrialists, company secretaries, CEOs, Charted accountants, Faculty

members from Engineering and Business school on a common platform. An eminent

speaker Mr. Sanjeev Baitmangalkar, Strategy and Lean Management consultant, Stratmann

Consulting, Bengaluru was invited as the resource person for the program.

The program was inaugurated by Shri. S. S. Sambaragimath, Chairman, Governing Council,

SGBIT along with Shri. Gopal Jinagouda, Jinabakul Forge, Belagavi.

Year 2015-16

During his sessions Mr. Sanjeev Baitmangalkar elaborated about correct understanding of

Lean Manufacturing with lean case studies and other success stories to understand the

possible extent of cost reduction and financial gains. He also explained why only few

succeed when most fail, and what should the industries do to succeed. The program got an

overwhelming response where in a staggering number of more than 125 participants were

participated. Industries like Jinabakul Forge, Belagavi, SNT Tooling Systems Bengaluru,

Ashok Iron Works Belagavi, Vegas Automotives, Servo control, Reliance Engg Corporation,

and many were participated.

Dr. Mohan Vanarotti, Department Mechanical Engineering welcomed the Gathering. Dr. S.

S. Salimath, Principal, delivered the presidential address. Dr. U. C. Kapale Dean Academics

proposed the vote of thanks. The chairman, Governing Council, SGBIT, Shri. S. G.

Sambaragimath and all the staff members were present in the occasion.

After forty years of Core Competence in Strategy and Management, Lean Manufacturing,

Innovation, Industrial Marketing, Business Process Reengineering, Turnarounds etc. and

successfully running large organizations in India and abroad, you can’t miss the passion that

oozes out when you talk or hear him talk about Lean Manufacturing, Innovation and Strategy.

He was among the pioneers who introduced ‘Lean Manufacturing’ in India in the early 1990’s

and is credited for successful complete transformation of Mysore Kirloskar’s (MKL) Hubli factory

as India’s first full and comprehensive lean factory! Commended by Jeffery Liker (author, The

Toyota Way) among many as “one of the TOP total lean enterprise turnarounds the world has

known”. Taking over the reign from Americans and turning around the Bridgeport Joint Venture

in South East Asia saw the Presidents and Ambassadors visit to see it. His work was used in

teaching Operations and Strategic Management at IIM Ahmadabad during the early 1990’s.

There are many benchmarks in manufacturing left behind by him that remain to be bettered

even today. The Stirling University in UK scripted his remarkable success in a case study ‘The

Turnaround Turn master. ’The book ‘Lean and Agile Supply Chains’ carries another title ‘Lean,

the success story’, besides others such as ‘Changing the Course’ etc. are visible on electronic

media.

INDUSTRIAL VISIT TO JINDAL STEEL WORKS(JSW) TORANGALU BELLARY

On behalf of industrial tour students of 8th Semester mechanical engineering students along

with prof S N Malagi and Prof M S Tattimani visited well know JINDAL STEEL WORKS PVT LTD (JSW)

Bellary on 22/2/16 and 23/2/16. Jindal steel works is one of the largest steel production units in India.

JSW is the largest industry spread over the radius of 25 acres of land. Students gained the practical

knowledge about extraction and production of steel in the various forms also students visited the India’s largest blast furnace present in JSW steels. Students also gained the knowledge about the safety, moral,

disciplinary and standard practices which will be followed in the MNC industries like JSW. Overall it was

the fruitful industrial visit followed by the Visit to world famous Tungabhadra dam and vijayanagara

Hampi.

TECHNICAL TALK ON RESEARCH ON BIO DEISEL BY DR. CHIDANAND GAVIMATH

With the blessings of his holiness Dr. Siddarama Swamiji, under the banner of ARMES and ACE a

technical talk was given by Dr. Chidanand Gavimath special officier Bio fuel research and ED Cell VTU

Belagavi on 29/2/2016 in seminar hall of S G Balekundri Institute of technology Belagavi. He narrated in

detail the research activities, manufacturing, applications and advantages of bio fuel and allied by

products. He also encouraged the students to come forward to become entrepreneurs and help the

country to reduce its dependency on import of fuel oil and make India self sufficient .Students from

mechanical and civil engineering departments attended the talk in large numbers, Dr U C Kapale dean

academics welcomed the speaker, Dr B R Patagundi HOD Civil and other staff members of mechanical

and civil engineering department were present. Occasion was concluded by plant the plantation of trees

by the students and faculty members at the SGBIT campus.

MOTIVATIONAL TALK ON HUMAN VALUES IN ENGINEERING BY PROF K. B.JAGADEESHGOUDA

With the blessings of his holiness Dr. Siddarama Swamiji, under the banner of ARMES a

Motivational talk was given by Prof. K B Jagadeeshgouda SGBIT Belagavi on 19/03/2016 in seminar hall-I.

In his talk he motivated about the importance of human values in Engineering. Students and staff

members from mechanical Engineering department attended the talk in large numbers. Prof.

Kundansingh thakur welcomed the speaker. Overall the session was informative and effective.

MOTIVATIONAL TALK ON BLOOMS TAXONOMY BY DR. D.H RAO

With the blessings of his holiness Dr. Siddarama Swamiji, under the banner of ARMES a

Motivational talk was given by Dr. D H Rao Dean Skill Development SGBIT Belagavi on 05/05/2016 in

seminar hall-I. In his talk he addressed the faculty regarding importance of Blooms Taxonomy for the

accreditation process and regarding improvement of quality of the students. Principal Dr S.S. Salimath,

Dean Academics and HOD Mechanical Dr U C Kapale and staff members from mechanical Engineering

department graced the occasion.
