Biostatistical reasoning and modeling were of critical importance to the foundation
theories of modern biology. In the early 1900s, after the rediscovery of Gregor Mendel's
Mendelian inheritance work, the gaps in understanding between genetics and evolutionary
Darwinism led to vigorous debate among biometricians, such as Walter Weldon, Karl
Pearson, Charles Davenport, William Bateson and Wilhelm Johannsen. By the 1930s,
statisticians and models built on statistical reasoning had helped to resolve these
differences and to produce the neo-Darwinian modern evolutionary synthesis. Biostatistics
is the study of statistics as applied to biological areas. Biological laboratory experiments,
medical research (including clinical research), agricultural and health services research all
use statistical methods.
In view of this, Zakir Husain Delhi College is organizing a Workshop on
Biostatistics -- an initiative to Educate the Educators in March 9-10, 2017. The University
Grants Commission has introduced several new papers such as Biostatistics; Cryptography
and Network Security; Information Security; Combinatorics and Applications of Algebra etc.
under choice based credit system for undergraduate students of Mathematics and Botany.
To do justice with the students, the faculty of various colleges of University of Delhi need to
undergo training in this paper.
The workshop is being organized as a part of Faculty Development Programme and
the participants will be teachers/research scholars of Mathematics/Statistics/Botany/Zoology
from various colleges/institutes. However, due to the mandate of UGC, as a part of recently
introduced CBCS programme at the undergraduate level, they are expected to teach these
papers.
Therefore, it is proposed that together with lecture along with applications (an hour
and 15 minutes duration), they should also get worksheets in order to give them hands on
practice. Some of the topics that need to be covered are as follows:
Applications of Algebra
Cryptography and Network Security
Combinatorics
Information Security
Logistic regression
Sample size determination
Chi square analysis
Estimation and testing of hypothesis
Exploratory data analysis
Tests of significance
Probability
