Eng., Pijika PUMKETKAO (AUSser) Dr Jean BAFFIE (IrAsia / IRASEC)(to be confirmed) This workshop will question the relevance of imported notions regarding heritage conservation in Thai- land and Indonesia. Specialists from Thailand, Indonesia and Europe will gather during these two days to exchange their ideas and analyses on this topic. It aims at shedding new light on discrepancies (or similarities) between local and internationalized heritage discourses and practices. Our approach will consist first in analyzing the reception of four imported notions: “Heritage”, “Intangible Heritage”, “Her- itage City”, and “Cultural Landscape” through past and present projects in Thailand and Indonesia. We will focus on the reception of external cultural features: circulation, appropriation or rejection, localization that produces a distinct, hybridized outcome. This workshop will give a rare opportunity to have a deeper and better understanding of major texts of law, regulations, institutional documents as well as texts produced by group communities, through applications, negotiations, etc. The first morning will be dedicated to presentations of ongoing research of each group that has been conducted since our last workshop in Yogyakarta. One session in the first day’s afternoon will then enable each working group to discuss and exchange views on the use of these imported words in a collection of texts and projects selected as case studies. The second morning will be dedicated to joint discussions that will lead to broader debates on the Thai and Indonesian experiences in comparative approach. A discussion of the thematic group focusing on the urban, legal and represent- ative aspects will be held on the last afternoon. This research will develop a comparative approach that identifies the uniqueness of heritage practices in non-western countries. It aims at establishing a process likely to enlighten the level of critical reflexivity in these contexts, crossing analysis of projects, speeches and the relevant actors in heritage practices. Other Southeast Asian cases, such as Cambodia and Malaysia, will be proposed for heritage area studies in the near future. All papers will be given in English. This workshop will question the relevance of imported notions regarding heritage conservation in Thai-land and Indonesia. Specialists from Thailand, Indonesia and Europe will gather during these two days to exchange their ideas and analyses on this topic. It aims at shedding new light on discrepancies (or similarities) between local and internationalized heritage discourses and practices. Our approach will consist first in analyzing the reception of four imported notions: “Heritage”, “Intangible Heritage”, “Her-itage City”, and “Cultural Landscape” through past and present projects in Thailand and Indonesia.

The second morning will be dedicated to joint discussions that will lead to broader debates on the Thai and Indonesian experiences in comparative approach. A discussion of the thematic group focusing on the urban, legal and represent-ative aspects will be held on the last afternoon.
