Ben Prestage April 16, 7:30 p.m. Soaked in blues tradition and Mississippi culture since birth, Ben Prestage grew up in the swamps of south Central Florida. Ben began to mix Mississippi Country Blues with his own brand of Florida Swamp Blues. He added a cigar-box guitar to his show of stereo guitar and bass strings that can be played independently. To play a drum-kit, he added a series of four foot pedals to be manipulated by the heels and toes of both feet. Limited seating. $25 / Members $22.50. Travel Ecuador & The Galápagos Islands March 9 – 17 Sample the unique blend of cultural and natural wonders of Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands, perhaps the most fascinating archipelago on Earth. This nine day cruise and tour will include a staff of naturalist guides to help explore and learn more about the incredible plants and vastly different animals unique only to the Galápagos! Children & Family Activities Family Tree Climbing April 9 from noon - 5 p.m. Tackle the challenge of trying to scale one of the Gardens’ tall live oak trees. Led by qualified trainers. Ropes, harnesses and helmets are provided for safety. $17 / Members $12. Adults & children ages 6 and up. Reservations required. Family Night Hike April 21 from 8 - 9:30 p.m. Unravel the mysteries of nighttime sights and sounds as you discover the Gardens after the sun goes down. Bring a flashlight or headlamp. $5 per participant. Adults & children ages 10 and up. Reservations required. Greetings!I have planned the new season with love for Bok Tower Gardens and all it represents, music, art, gardens and nature. I reflect back on the many years, more than 24 in all, and the many friendships with members, visitors and staff that have grown over the years. My heartfelt thanks to all of you. You have touched my life profoundly and I hope to see you at these and other programs.

Tickets will be mailed and include the date, time and place of the program. Programs held at the Gardens include all-day admission and members receieve a discount. Please show the program ticket at the gate instead of your membership card.

Pinewood in Watercolor - Janet KingThrough February 3

Janet King’s watercolors capture the essence of Pinewood Estate, one of the finest examples of Mediterranean-style architecture. The award-winning Sebring artist and instructor is inspired by the mood created by the light when painting plein air, and enjoys the spontaneity of watercolor. A member of the prestigious Florida Watercolor Society, she believes that there are no absolute rules – just freedom.

Discovering Beauty in Gardens and Wild Places - Allen RokachFebruary 5 – March 31

Allen Rokach is internationally known for photographing flowers, gardens and landscapes. He has served as senior photographer for Southern Living magazine and director of photography at the New York Botanical Garden. A digital photo workshop and lecture with Allen will be held February 25 -27.

Music at the GardensMusic at Pinewood: Winter Song by TammerlinDecember 17 & 18Holiday Home Tour 7 p.m. / Concert 7:30 p.m.

Winter Song is a beautiful and unusual holiday program of ancient and modern carols, poems, readings and songs to fit the season. The Arts Council of Greater Palatka describes Lee Hunter and Arvid Smith’s music and readings as “lovely, thought-provoking and inspiring. They brought smiles to our faces and the occasional tear to our eyes.” Meet the artists at the champagne reception following the concert.

Hailed by critics as one of the most exciting piano duos of our time, Drs. Edward Turgeon and Ann Louise-Turgeon play four hands on one piano. Duo Turgeon has made many recordings, television appearances and international performances..

Music at Pinewood: A Romantic Valentine Evening of Viennese Music & Dining February 14, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

The 1930s Mediterranean-style Pinewood Estate will be transformed into an evening of elegance and grandeur. Garden cocktails, dinner and strolling musicians included.

Music at Pinewood: Humor and Romance in Music by Joseph SchwartzFebruary 27, 4:30 – 6:30 p.m.Dedicated to Mrs. Marilyn Newell

Noted for brilliance and sensitivity in classical and romantic piano literature, Dr. Joseph Schwartz will feature the Beethoven Eroica Variations, Chopin Ballade No. 2 in F Major as well as works by Schumann and others. The concert will include piano duets with his wife Renata.

Music at Pinewood: Carnegie Hall Reunion at Pinewood by Eugene Flemm & Edward DixonMarch 27, 4:30 – 6:30 p.m.Dedicated to Mrs. Nellie Lee Bok

Works of Rachmaninoff, Beethoven and Ernest Bloch will be performed by returning pianist Eugene Flemm with cellist Edward Dixon. From recitals to orchestral concerts, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the duo has collaborated on a variety of musical performances.

Live at the Gardens! with Victoria de Lissovoy Jazz QuintetFebruary 19, 7:30 p.m.

Victoria de Lissovoy returns with Doug Mathews, bass; David MacKenzie, saxophone; Paul Butcher, trumpet & flugelhorn and Ian Goodman on drums. An evening of warm jazz atmosphere with a variety of styles, renditions and many great standards will delight audiences by these popular Central Florida jazz musicians.

Florida Wildlife and Surroundings - Alice HansenApril 2 – May 26

Alice Hansen’s favorite subjects, marine life, birds and scenes of rural Florida, will be on display in this exhibit. Featured on the covers of fishing magazines and wildlife publications, Alice’s award-winning artwork appears in many corporate, public and private collections. She is a signature member of the prestigious Florida Watercolor Society.

Learn new painting techniques, strengthen drawing skills and get your creativity flowing with artist Owen Jolly. Still life, floral, landscape and portrait subjects will be included; classes are held mostly indoors.

Step-by-step basic watercolor techniques and the elements of design will be taught. No previous experience required.

Photo-lecture: The Joy of Photographing Flowers with Allen Rokach Speaker: Allen RokachFebruary 25, 6 – 8 p.m.

Learn how to create exciting photos of flowers, gardens and landscapes from one of the world’s foremost experts! Allen Rokach has traveled the world on photographic assignments since 1975 and will share his secrets to success in an audio-visual presentation and lecture. He will show how to analyze the quality, direction and intensity of light to make your images pop.

Focus on Flowers: Discovering the Hidden Beauty of Floral Photography with Allen Rokach Instructor: Allen RokachFebruary 26 – 27

Learn the art of creating floral close-ups in Allen Rokach’s weekend workshop for intermediate and advanced students of photography. Topics include using the appropriate macro lens, extension tub or close-up lens; how to control sharpness in the subject and background for a variety of aesthetic effects; and how to make the most of any weather or lighting situation and use after-capture techniques to refine results. From analyzing natural light to using small electronic flash units creatively, Allen will show how to pre-visualize images and use conventional and digital camera settings. (Includes February 25 lecture)
