that makes the record businessthe unpredictable business thatit is, Roulette, this past week, experienced immediate reactionto an overnight novelty smash. It all happened before the rec-ord was even shipped.

It started when Roulettepurchased a master. The song,a spoof of the current hit"Leader Of The Pack," is en-titled "Leader Of The Laundro-mat." It was written by PaulVance and Lee Pockriss (writ-ers of still another noveltysmash, "Itsy Bitsy TeenyWeeny Yellow Polka Dot Bi-kini"). "Leader Of The Laun-dromat" was recorded by TheDetergents-naturally.

A few days after the purchasewas made, Roulette stayed openon Saturday of last week, andmailed out about 200 deejaycopies around the country. OnMonday, the record broke wideopen in New York and by theend of the week, when the fulldeejay shipment was being sentto distributors, and initial com-mercial pressings were beingshipped, the label had bookedover 70,000 in orders. Merc Gives a ...CHICAGO-To damn or not

to damn . .. that was the ques-tion at Mercury Records lastweek as perplexed companyexecs coped with the problemof the last line of Leroy VanDyke's new single, "Anne of AThousand Days" . . . remi-niscent of the controversy over"Big Bad John."

In the original pressing of"Anne," the final line of thesong has an injured husbandcommenting coldly about hiswife with the line made famousby Rhett Butler: "Frankly mydear, I don't give a damn."

Mercury VP Kenny Myersspun the disks for Art Roberts, program director of Chicago'sWLS, who thought some listen-ers might object to that final"damn." And so did PDs at anumber of other stations. SoMyers stopped the presses toremove the offending word. Inthe new version, Van Dyke'svoice fades away into the dis-tance as he hits the bad word.

Problem solved? No. NextMercury began to receive callsfrom stations such as WKDAin Nashville and WSHO in NewOrleans. What had happened tothe "damn" they demanded.

So, Mercury is shipping anew single: "Anne of A Thou-sand Days" is on both sides:One with a damn, one withouta damn.

A&R Chief Wayne Works WithPic, TV Co.'s; Wants Balance

    BY DOUG McCLELLAND

NEW YORK-A closer co-ordination between the 20thCentury Fox film and TV com-panies with the record company-that's the word (or one ofthem) since Bernie Wayne tookover as A&R chief at the disk-ery Oct. 2, 1964.

Wayne, also an outstandingpop song composer, opined: "Ahit record can greatly increasethe value of a star. Look atTV's Richard Chamberlain.Or George Maharis, also on TVthen, who did my song 'Laugh-ing On The Outside' and provedthat a successful record is atremendous all-around help toany performer. And Bobby Vin -ton's recording of my 'BlueVelvet' gave him a whole newimage as a singer of modernstandards."

Wayne quickly added that20th Century Fox Records wasnot concentrating all its fire in

one field, as the Mary Wells pophit recording of "Ain't It TheTruth" proves. "Any recordcompany that goes in for onetype of record is traveling aswift road to oblivion. A reallysuccessful record companyshould have roots in all fields, must be well balanced."

20th Century Fox Recordshas proved to be exceptionallywell-balanced since Wayne'sinstatement. The deal for acqui-sition of hot artist Mary Wellswas finalized after Wayne'sarrival; and the label also re-corded the title songs of fourtop Fox movies: "GoodbyeCharlie," by Joya Sherri],"Guns of Batasi," by John Ad-dison; and "Rio Conchos" b/w"Fate is The Hunter," byJohnny Desmond.

One of the company's biggestcurrent pushes is on LennyMaxwell's novelty single, "A

  • Fox Drums UpSales: Lewis

Len Lewis, 20th CenturyFox Records National SalesManager, informed RecordWorld last week that thesales for the label's stapleclassic, "The Little DrummerBoy" by The Harry SimeoneChorale, both single and LP,have far exceeded previousyears.

"We have the only originalversion of 'Little DrummerBoy," Lewis added, "by theSimeone Chorale. Other labelshave used the Simeone nameto exploit their versions of'Drummer Boy,' but we're theonly ones with Harry's origi-nal recording."

Lewis also was excitedabout the great sales on theMary Wells single, "Ain't ItThe Truth," and the label'sre -packaged albums of 20thCentury Fox movie tracks byShirley Temple, Glenn Millerand Tommy Dorsey. "And weintend to delve even deeperinto the vast Fox film vaults,as well as to continue lookingfor new and name artists."

(Bette's single will bemore of a recitation than asinging vocal.) Two newcomers,Mia Farrow from Fox TV's'Peyton Place,' and CharmianCarr, from the Fox film 'TheSound of Music,' will also berecorded on our single records. So will Tony Franciosa, cur-rently starring in his owncomedy series, 'Valentine'sDay,' on Fox television."

Wayne continued, "Anotherproject very close to my heartis an album of sides cut someyears ago by a singer who wasa favorite of mine as a kid.Buddy Clarke. Back in the late'30s he sang for Jack Haley ina Fox film called 'Wake Upand Live' and I'm working onan album of Clarke's tunesfrom that picture right now. It'll be out early in '65."

Wayne is anxious to creditother Fox record companyexecs who have helped to bringthe firm to the one of its mostprosperous and promising pe-riods. There's Len Lewis, Na-tional Sales Chief; Al Calder, head of publicity and Exploita-

    Chock Full of Songs

How many songs has Waynewritten? "About 2,000," helaughed. He asked if the writerhad seen the Broadway show,"Ben Franklin in Paris." Howhad he liked the music? He hadliked it well enough. "I'm glad,"said Wayne, "because MarkSandrich Jr., its composer, is agood friend of mine. In fact, some years ago I wrote a tunefor his wife, actress VanessaBrown, which became popular. It was called 'Vanessa,' a love-ly, musical name, I thought. One day while lunching withVanessa I told her how much Iliked her name and she said, ',Myreal name is Smylla Brind.' Wayne also wrote "There SheIs, Miss America" in 1955 forthe Miss America Beauty Pag-eant - which he claims has be-come a standard with "onlynine performances on TV." Hismost lucrative ditty, however, begins, "Chock Full of Nuts issuch heavenly coffee. . . ."

"When I came to 20th Cen-tury Fox Records," Wayne wenton, "some people said, God, he'sa songwriter - he'll be doingall his own songs. One daysomeone brought me a master onmy song, 'Laughing on TheOutside.' I had to turn it downbecause it just wasn't right forus!"

    CAPERS

    Beatlemania Revisited!BY TED RANDAL

HOLLYWOOD-Not since the late '50s has there been a weekin the record and radio industries like last week, for that was"The week of The Beatles." Since many of you were involved, since most of you are interested, this is the story.

The Beatles' record "I Feel Fine" c/w "She's A Woman" wasdue to be released to disk jockeys on Tuesday, Nov. 17. All diskjockeys around the nation were to receive their copies at thesame time so that no one could scream "Exclusive."

On Saturday, Nov. 7, Dave Hull of KRLA in Pasadena obtaineda pressed copy of the record, and the station started playing itimmediately as an exclusive. On Tuesday, Nov. 10, KFWB in LosAngeles received a call from a listener asking why they were

not playing the new Beatles' record, and afterlistening to a few weak excuses politely in-formed them that the record was available at alocal record store. They called the record store(which had received a box of 25 by some fluke)and were told there was one left if they wantedto purchase it. KFWB's program director JimHawthorne dashed to the store, bought the rec-ord and put it on the air. Now there were two.Sam Riddle, dj for KFWB, played the record onhis "Ninth St. West" TV show that same night, and an alert program director in San Bernardino

recorded the record from Sam's show, and that night it was heardon KFXM. Now there were three.

By this time, KFWB and KRLA had stopped interrupting theirrecords with the term "exclusive," so it was an easy matter totape the record off the air if one desired. That being the case,KRLA consented to make taped dubs for a few of their friends, and by Wednesday night one could hear The Beatles' new recordbeing played in Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Fresno andPhoenix.

Calls started pouring in from all over the country offering largesums of money to KRLA and its disk jockeys if they would sendthem a taped dub of the most important record to hit the UnitelStates since the old Elvis Presley days. Denver called; Sacra-mento called; Phoenix called (the other station) ; Seattle called;and others called, but to no avail. The record (or taped dub)was not for sale except to those few who had already received it.

By Thursday, Nov. 12, there was so much pressure on CapitolRecords to release the single for everyone that the big companywas frantically phoning London for an okay on an early release. On this same day, Thursday, KQV in Pittsburgh obtained a copywhich they immediately aired and then sent down their telephoneline for their sister station in New York, WABC.

On Friday, Nov. 13, Capitol informed the multitude of djs whohad been calling them for five days that they now had singlecopies of "I Feel Fine" and "She's A Woman," and they weresending them out by air mail that same day. But that wasn'tfast enough for some of the stations. Clint Churchill, owner ofKYA in San Francisco, had Bill Keffury, his program director, fly down to pick up his copy personally. To make certain theirsister station in Oakland, KEWB, had a copy before KYA couldget theirs on the air, Don Anti, KFWB's music librarian, pickedup a copy and headed for the airport and San Francisco. Asmight be expected, both Anti and Keffury were making a maddash for the Los Angeles International Airport at the same time, neither with the knowledge that he was racing the other.

Now, almost all of the stations are playing the record, and mosttempers have quieted or calmed down.

It truly was the most exciting week I've seen in the businessfor several years, but I'm glad it's all over. Or is it? The newBeatles' album is due to be released next week, and thoughCapitol is taking every precaution to see that the same bedlamdoes not reoccur, we can only wait and see if any dj is inventiveenough to obtain a copy prior to its regular release date.

Old Pros Are The LifeOf 'Pajama Party'

By DOUG McCLELLANDThe most interest in the latest American International Pictures'

seemingly once -a -month series of teen-age color filmusicals, "Pa-jama Party," is engendered by people over 40. Which is an indi-cation right off that everything with "PP" hasn't materializedexactly as planned.

Annette Funicello is back as the young heroine in this newestgame of beach blanket bingo (which, incidentally, "Pajama Party"announces in the amusing closing credits will be the title of thenext AIP naval epic), poised and maturing herself right onto thesame studio's equally lucrative assembly line of Vincent Pricehorror films. Frankie Avalon has been sacrificed to some extentthis time in favor of Tommy Kirk-Frankie turns up only in acameo appearance. But cameos (remember way back when theywere played by bit actors and were called bits, before the starsgot a hold of them?) turn up frequently, between endless shotsof frugging femme fannies-Renie Riano (once the screen's Mag-gie of "Maggie and Jiggs"), Kerry Kollmar as a sub -teen voyeurand his mom, Dorothy Kilgallen (riding a motorcycle and a cow,no less!). And Dorothy Lamour.

Miss Lamour only has one scene as the head saleslady in thedress shop of Aunt Wendy (Elsa Lanchester), obliging bunkmother to a bunch of one-track minded teens. But the former sa-rong girl has aged attractively and does a delightful, wild spoofof herself and the island musicals she used to do, singing "In myday we didn't do it that way" while she watusis up a typhoon.Time and a bit of excess poundage have not enhanced her step-ping, and her singing was never quite as good as Frances Lang -ford's; but Dottie, whether through old-fashioned glamour, per-sonality, nostalgia or the ability to convey anxious -to -pleaseintentions (probably all four), lifts the audience to a peak of funwith this one number no one else in the film manages.

Next to La Lamour, Miss Lanchester is responsible for themost merriment (along with the cutter, who has arranged thepassing fannies for laughs much of the time). Her best scene:

    Alan Freeman

Well, wouldn't you feel nervousif someone said to you "You'veonly got six weeks left." I'vebeen feeling quite ill ever sincethat shattering statement as-sailed my pop -filled eardrums, and in between smoking far tooheavily, I've been trying to planjust how I can fill that sixweeks to the full.

I sit at the michrophone andin front of the TV cameras, andI keep hearing that voice saying,"only six weeks." I think to my-self, what have I done to desrvethis ultimatum? My secretaryCynthia is worried, too, because

it was she who told me the ghastly news. She said, "Now reallyAlan, you must stop all this lethargy, and go and finalize all yourarrangements. Before you know, it will all be over, and you'll bein a terrible state of confusion. Go and buy those Christmaspresents today, because . . . you've only got six weeks left"!

I only had four weeks left last year, so as you can see, I'mimproving. From one or two fan letters received this week, there's room for plenty more improvement! Would you believe it?A gentleman wrote me this week with a cheery little pre -Christ-mas greeting that read, "I wonder when people such as yourselfwill wake up to realize the scorn and contempt which peoplehave for you disk jockeys!" Well, as you can imagine, I crossedhim off my Christmas card list immediately, and thought to my-self quite seriously, "What a shame he wasted all that time writingme a letter like that, when he could have utilized his time somuch better and perhaps given a couple of minutes' happiness tosomeone in need of it." People are so strange, aren't they?

There's something quite magnificent about the "Hello, Dolly"album that your Ella Fitzgerald cut over here in London recently, and with a tremendous backing from our own M.D. JohnnySpence, Ella's "People" must be one of her best ever. Memo toElla: Come over and see us again soon, 'cause you're just toomuch!

Did I tell you that while I was over in Belfast, Northern Ire-land, I bought Cilia Black a 21st birthday present of Irish Linen(a table cloth and 12 napkins), and I still haven't had the timeto give it to her yet? Actually, if I hold on a little longer, perhapsshe'll give it back to me as a Christmas present! I say chaps, what an idea that might be. Give everyone their birthday presentsat Christmas and you might get most of them back!

As expected, there's a Yuletide flavor creeping into thepop world at this very minute with Brenda Lee's "Christmas WillBe Just Another Lonely Day" and Roy Orbison's "Pretty Paper."The reaction to Roy's new one should be very interesting indeed. And what have the "Pop Pickers" of this increasingly chilly islebeen up to? Well, your Supremes, have taken only three weeks inthe charts to take over No. 1, and we couldn't be happier! TheKinks have crashed the the "Top 10" at this week's No. 6, andonly after entering the "Top 20" at last week's No. 15 with "AllDay And All Of The Night" (not what you'd describe as a "HardDay's Night" by any standard!). Jim Reeves has come in at No.17 with "There's A Heartache Following Me." The Pretty Thingshave made their first chart entry ever at No. 15 with "Don'tBring Me Down." And again our hit parade is garnished with thedelicate flavor of Dusty Springfield at No. 20 with "Losing You."I'm delighted to say that our own Petula Clark who's now a bigstar on the Continent, is back in the running for further Britishlaurels with a tremendous new single entitled, "Down Town." Ihope this one's released in America.

Now, who can I write a nasty letter to? Your Editor -in -chiefSid Parnes? Er... no, I need the work! I know, my income tax in-spector. He's becoming far too familiar. Fancy having the nerveto ask me how much a year I earn. He hardly knows me!

Thisskilled comedienne has a large part but awful lines and provesher dedication by not blanching while saying them. Buster Keaton, although playing an Indian, is not so lucky. Called upon to do in-creasingly demeaning stunts, he is positively ashen when he hasto pick off a pair of oozing sunnyside eggs from his fine stoneface. Other oldsters include Jesse White and Ben Lessy, the ami-able villains who team with Keaton for a forehead -slapping triorole you know was originally meant for The Three Stooges.

The youngsters also include Jody McCrea and Capitol Recordssongstress Donna Loren; and Susan Hart and Bobbi Shaw, whoprovide two funny bits, the former's perhaps unintentional, thelatter's in-. Lying around their room in gold mules and pjs thatwould pack a burley house, the voluptuous Misses Hart and Funi-cello share a musical interlude, all wide-eyed and sweet, culminat-ing with Miss Funicello playfully tossing a pillow at Miss Hart, who responds with such a startled "Oh !" that one can only assumeMiss Funicello had put one of her mules in the pillow. Miss Shaw'sbig moment comes when Martian Tommy Kirk scares her out of herbathtub, into a towel and down the stairs where she stops on thelast step, throws her arms around redskin Keaton-his face buriedin her extraordinary upper register-and nearly shivvers his headoff. They didn't do it this way in Andy Hardy's day, either.

The teen idiom songs by Guy Hemric and Jerry Styner are defi-nite plusses; and director Don Weis gets the most from a screen-play loaded with dialogue of the "Not if I have anything to sayabout it!"-"Here we go again!" school. Kids love a pajamaparty, and they certainly don't put adults to sleep. This "PajamaParty" should not shatter tradition.

Consignment Policy At KingKing Records, under Prexy

Sydney Nathan, has embarkedon a new method of selling theirrecords to dealers - consign-ment. They are no longer sellingrecords in bulk. Instead they areplacing their albums in storesand charging dealers ($2.19)only for albums sold. The dealerreturns the unsold items at nocost.

An article Nathan is nowsending to dealers, called "My25 Years in the Record Busi-ness," sums up his decision to goon the consignment tack. Themost important reason is that,on consignment, he feels, deal-ers can be persuaded to acceptmore records on a trial basis-thereby giving added retail ex-posure. Nathan writes, "Youcan't sell an item unless the re-tail buyer sees it. If he never

gets to see it, there's no waypossible to sell it."

There are initial problems,Nathan states, such as gettinga large enough stock in order todistribute plentifully to all hisdealers. Another wrinkle is con-vincing dealers that there is nocatch in the consignment ap-proach.

These obstacles, he says, aredisappearing gradually.

In order to encourage busi-ness men with small sales spaceto take on the additional Kingproduct, Nathan is purchasingsingle and double racks forplacement where needed.

As a part of the program,Nathan is no longer referringto his field men as "salesmen."They are now known as "service
