Imagine a construction material that is a versatile and

renewable resource, absorbs greenhouse gases, has an

amazing growth rate, grows in a variety of conditions, leaves

very little waste, needs no fertilizer, pesticides or herbicides,

protects the soil, aids economic development and is aharbinger of optimism and cultural cooperation. Wishful

thinking, some might say. But such a material exists all

    aroundusweknowitasbamboo!

found across the world, it is an economic resource with

immense potential for improving the quality of life of rural

and urban communities with environment regeneration

qualities like carbon sequestering. Bamboo provides raw

One of the Earth's oldest and most precious construction

materials, bamboo has played a major role throughout the

tropical and sub-tropical belts particularly of Asia, and also

across the world. The extraordinary characteristics of

bamboo have, both in the past and the present, made it

useful in many countries whose inhabitants have found a

thousand-and-one ways to take advantage of its many

properties: resistance, lightness, flexibility, rapid growth and

visual charm. No doubt, bamboo is growing on to become a

    The World

Bamboo DayWorld Bamboo Day was declared in 2009 by the Thai Royal ForestDepartment on 18th September in Bangkok, during the 8th WorldBamboo Congress. This declaration is an effort to increase the

awareness of bamboo globally. Where bamboo grows naturally,

bamboo has been a daily element, but its utilization has not always

been sustainable due to exploitation. The World Bamboo

Organization aims to elevate the potential of bamboo via

international exposureandpromotion- to protectnatural resourcesand the environment, to ensure sustainable utilization, to promote

new cultivation of bamboo for new industries, i.e. bio-fuel, bio-

plastics, carbon credits, etc., as well as promote traditional uses

locally to improve community economic development and

    livelihood.

seedling as a symbolic gesture of our mission. The bamboo plants,

grown and provided by the Royal Forest Department, were planted

in Prachin Buri at the Khao Hin Sorn Royal Development Study

Nagalanda land of vibrant hues and bambooThe undulating state of Nagaland is extremely charming and

lovingly beautiful. A home to as many as sixteen tribes, the state has

much to explore. The virgin terrains of the state are breathtakingly

enchanting. For a visitor, Nagaland offers a panorama of nature,

warmth and hospitality of people, lavish blossoms and coy rivers

    makingtheirwaythroughthe ruggedterrains. Located at thenorth-

eastern part of India, Nagaland is bordered by the state of Assam

and Arunachal Pradesh from the north, Myanmar from the east and

Manipur from the north. The capital of the state is Kohima but the

largest city of the state is Dimapur. Colourful life and culture are an

integral part of the16 officially recognized Naga tribesof Nagaland.

These 16 tribes are different and unique in their customs and

traditions. These customs and traditions are further translated into

festivals which revolve around their agricultural cycle. Songs and

dances form the soul of these festivals through which their oral

history has been passed down the generations. Nature has been

kind to the Nagas and their land. By virtue ofher natural beauty, the

whole ofNagalandis a tourist hotspot. From the bamboo world perspective, Nagaland is home to about

5% of Indias growing stock of bamboo which is about 448,000

hectares. With about46 species of thewonder grass identified in the

state, the predominant species are Melocanna baccifera,

Dendrocalamus strictus, Dendrocalamus hamiltoii, Bambusa tulda,

    Bambusa balcooa, Dendrocalamus giganteus, Teinostachyum

dullooa, and Bambusa palliada. Even as Nagaland took the lead in

the fight against climate change through bamboo at the World

BambooCongressat Bangkok in 2009, thestatehasalso entered the

World Bamboo Map with its bamboo potentials being the largest

    producerofbambooin India.
