ENGLAND boss Fabio Capelloshould be brave and pick Joe Hart asEngland’s No1 goalkeeper for theWorld Cup.

That’s the belief of former Towngoalkeeper Alan Starling, who haswatched Hart’s development closelyover the last few years.

While the 23-year-old will be backat Manchester City next season asunderstudy to ShayGiven, he impressedStarling greatly duringhis season-long loan atBirmingham City lastterm.

And Starling, now 59,feels Hart is ready totake the biggest step ofall with Englandpreparing for their firstgroup game against theUSA on Saturday.

“Joe Hart has gainedan awful lot of experience this lastseason and looked really strongwhen playing for Birmingham,” saidStarling, who lives at Mount and is anational account manager forHuddersfield-based Miles Group.

“All season his distribution wasgreat, he’s a brilliant shot stopperand he’s fantastic on crosses, sowhat more do you want?

“As far as I’m concerned you don’tneed to make a choice because he’sthe best. If it were up to me, I wouldpick Joe ahead of both David Jamesand Robert Green and I wouldn’t havea worry about how he’s perform.”

Starling made 378 seniorappearances between 1969 and1980, starting his career withLuton Town and playing forTorquay (on loan), NorthamptonTown and thenHuddersfield.

He was a member ofMick Buxton’s famous1979-80 Fourth DivisionChampionship side, losing his place to AndyRankin only throughinjury.

“Joe Hart may lackexperience at the very

top level, but I don’t think thatmatters,” added Starling.

“He has played all season in thePremiership, done an excellent jobfor his team, he knows all the otherplayers in the England squad and,in my view, he has outplayed boththe other keepers in Capello’sselection.

“You can complicate things asmuch as you want, but the keeperis there to keep the ball out of the

net and, I reckon, JoeHart would be thebest ‘last line ofdefence’ for Englandin this World Cup.”

Portsmouth’sJames has No1 in thesquad list, butStarling would makehim third choice inthe tournament.

“David James hasbeen an excellentservant to England

and this is almost certainly his lastchance in a World Cup, but thatcan’t be the basis for making yourselection,” he said.

“All keepers are liable to makemistakes, but I think David Jamesmakes a few more than otherkeepers in the Premiership and Iwould take that into consideration.

“Robert Green did well inqualifying and also made a coupleof very good saves in the friendlyagainst Mexico, but I still thinkthat over the season Joe Hart hasplayed better than him.

“On experience, it’s reallyjust a matter of which manis best at keeping the ballout of the net – and that’sJoe Hart (left).

“He would be inspired bythe challenge of the World

Cup, not daunted by it.Players are always

fired up, but playingin a World Cupwould be a dream

come true and hewouldn’t want tomiss theopportunity ofperforming well.”

Ray Wilson

Ray Wilson was talking to Doug Thomson

WhyEngland’s66starsowedebttoTownfullbackLaurieIT’S an iconic football photograph.

Red-shirted Bobby Moore holdingthe Jules Rimet trophy aloft in hisright hand, his left on the shoulder ofRay Wilson, the World Cup winnercreated by Huddersfield Town.

Yet how many realise that had it notbeen for then Town left back LaurieKelly’s refusal to uproot from hisBlack Country home and live in theWest Riding, England might well havehad a different player at left-back onthat golden day at Wembley in 1966?

Few would dispute that the LeedsRoad product, by then playing forEverton, was the finest player in thatposition in the country at the timeWest Germany were beaten 4-2 afterextra time.

But when Wilson, from Shirebrook, near Mansfield, first signed for Townas a 17-year-old amateur in May 1952 –his full-time job was as a night workeron the railways – he regarded himselfas an inside-left.

“Town must have seen something inme when they first gave me a trial,”laughed Wilson, now 75 and living inthe Colne Valley.

“But it took a lot of hard work andpatience to get myself up to scratch, and to be honest, after going frominside-left to left wing to left-half toleft-back, the only other option wasbeing left out of the team!”

While many credit Roy Goodall, whoplayed right-back for Town andEngland in the Twenties and laterbecame trainer at Leeds Road, for

turning Wilson into a defender, theman himself says it was more down tofirst-team left-back Kelly’s insistenceon remaining in Wolverhampton, whohad transferred him to Town for£10,000 in October 1950.

“Lol was a very good player, butlike a lot at the time, he maintainedhis family home after his transfer, and through the week, still trainedwith Wolves,” explained Wilson.

“After I signed full-time forms (inAugust 1952) I was what they termeda ground-staff player, which meant I

did odd jobs around Leeds Road aswell as training.

“Each Tuesday, there as a practicematch on the main pitch between thefirst and second team. I was in thethirds at the time, but because LolKelly wasn’t there and I was, they putme in at left-back and things wentfrom there.”

Wilson certainly didn’t have what atthat time was the archetypalfull-back’s build.

“They were all hulking great brutes, like centre-halves and centre-forwards,” he recalled.

“I thought it daft, because it tookthem 10 minutes to turn and they werebeing asked to mark the fastestplayers on the pitch.

“I think I benefited from being thesame size as the men I was marking, because it meant I could get thechallenges in quicker and give themsomething to think about defensivelyas well.”

After getting the small matter oftwo years’ national service out of theway – he was a signaller with theRoyal Artillery in Egypt – Wilson, whomade tackling more of an art formthan the old-style physical assault, went from strength to strength.

He made his Town debut againstLuton at Leeds Road in the originalSecond Division in October 1955, andafter sharing the left-back shirt withKelly for a spell, became a fixture atNo3.

Such was his development that anEngland call-up came his way in April1960, his debut coming in front of129,783 Hampden crowd in a 1-1 drawwith a Scotland side bossed by AndyBeattie, who had been the Town

manager when Wilson first signed forthe club and gave him his first-teambow.

It was the first of 63 England outingsfor Wilson, who made 30 of them(including four in the 1962 World Cuptournament in Chile) while with Townand remains their most-capped Englandinternational (ahead of Goodall with 25)and the last player to wear the threelions at senior level while with the club.

Within weeks of the 1-0 defeat byArgentina in the famous MaracanaStadium in Brazil June 1964, Wilson hadbeen transferred to Everton in a dealwhich brought Town £25,000 plusRepublic of Ireland international MickMeagan, who swapped Goodison forLeeds Road.

Wilson had made 283 Townappearances, all but six of them inDivision II, and had almost given uphope of playing in the top flight again.

“Things were much different in thosedays,” he added.

“Today, you read of players signing afive-year contract and then demandingto leave halfway through.

“Clubs had far more control ofplayers back then, and pretty much, youonly got transferred if your club wantedthat to happen.

“I was 29 at the time of my move toEverton, I’d recently bought a newhouse in Huddersfield and I was verysettled, and being in Division II didn’tseem to affect my England situation, soI wouldn’t have complained if I’d playedout my career at Town.”

Not that Wilson was complainingabout being at Everton, with whom hewon the FA Cup against Sheffield Wed-nesday at Wembley just months beforeEngland’s World Cup triumph back atthe stadium.

“It was good to play for such a bigclub in such a football-mad city,” saidthe man who later had short spells atOldham and Bradford City before turn-ing his back on football and becomingan undertaker at Outlane.

“I hadn’t won anything in my careeruntil 1966, and then along came twowinners’ medals in close succession!

“It made the wait seem veryworthwhile.

“Having said that, I also considermyself lucky to have played forHuddersfield Town, who were, and stillare, a big club.

“They gave me my chance and stuckwith me when I was learning the game, and I enjoyed playing under all three ofmy managers (Beattie, Bill Shankly andEddie Boot).

“I can recall Town celebrating their50th anniversary, so to think they’venow had their centenary is verysobering!”

Law’sorder:EnglandoutDENIS LAW has a soft spotfor Huddersfield – but notfor England.

The former Town,Manchester City andManchester United ace fam-ously played golf ratherthan watch the 1966 finalon TV – and stormed off thecourse when told Alf Ram-sey’s side had beaten WestGermany.

Forty four years on, theman who collected the firstsix of his 55 Scotland capswhile still a Town player (thefinal three came in the 1974World Cup in West Germany)feels as strongly as ever.

Law, brought South fromAberdeen in 1955 by Townboss Andy Beattie, who hadmanaged Scotland in theWorld Cup in Switzerlandthe year before, said: “Idon’t take any interest inwhat England are doing.

“When they’re on telly Iwalk about with blinkerson and things in my ears.

“I would ratherbe on holiday ifthey were to winthe World Cup.”

Law, who made91 Town appear-ances before join-ing ManchesterCity in a Britishrecord £55,000transfer deal inMarch 1960,added: “WayneRooney’s the main man forEngland. I see him all thetime at United and youdon’t get anywherewithout a top-classgoalscorer.

“But I couldn’t really tellyou about their weaknessesbecause I don’t watch theirgames. I don’t have a greatdeal of interest in whatthey do.

“I look at the Germansand Brazil and I see thepotential winners of thecompetition which rulesout England.”

Andybelievesthistimeit’sgoingtobeWayne’sWorld

month. He also insists, however, thatno-one should get ahead of themselveswhen the World Cup always features itsshare of shock results and nations whosneak through the group stages underthe radar.

“It goes without saying thateveryone will be very disappointed ifEngland don’t make it through the firststage and into the knockout,” saidBooth, who played five times for theUnder 21s back in 1995, scoring once.

“You can’t think of anyinternational match as being easy, andespecially matches in the World Cupfinals, but as groups go, England

probably couldn’t have asked for abetter one with USA, Algeria andSlovenia.

“I would expect us to come throughthat group and I’m sure the aim ofCapello will be to make sure we comethrough unscathed in terms ofsuspensions, bookings and injuries.

“If we come through with a clean billof health, everyone available and nottoo many cards then we will be set upnicely.

“As I said, though, we can’t takethings easily. It’s vital we have the rightapproach and right attitude to makesure we go through in

convincing fashion.“We have seen it before where some

of the ‘big’ nations slip up and crashout before the knockout stages, butwith Capello in charge I’m sureEngland won’t be one of those thistime.”

While the ‘Capello Index’ was anunfortunate faux pas, Booth feels theItalian has made an impressive start tothe job.

He guided England through GroupSix of the qualifiers with ninevictories from 10 matches and just theone defeat.

They topped the table ahead ofUkraine (the only team to defeat themen route to South Africa) with 27 pointsand an impressive tally of 34 goalsscored compared with only six con-ceded.

“Capello has had to make a lot ofdecisions during his time in charge andan awful lot of them have turned out tobe the right decisions,” said Booth.

“I like what I have seen of him. He isa no nonsense type of manager and hewill be going out to win the World Cup,I’m absolutely certain of that. In hisown mind, he’ll be wanting to win it.

“He was definitely the right choice atthe right time and we came throughqualifying looking like a winning team, which was great.

“Capello will want to re-create that inthe finals and, while he will keep hiscards very close to his chest – as he didwith naming the 23-man squad – he willknow right now who his startingline-up will be in that first matchagainst the USA.

“No-one will really know what he isthinking and that keeps everyone ontheir toes and ready to impress.

“Rio Ferdinand as captain, WayneRooney, John Terry and probablySteven Gerrard and Ashley Cole are theonly players who might reckon they arecertainties, so the other half a dozenplaces are up for grabs.

“That’s a great situation to be inwhen it comes to competition amongthe squad, with people fighting forplaces all the way through – and thereis usually a surprise package whoemerges and does really well when theyweren’t really expected to.”

So how can England do in an eventfor which Spain and Brazil are beingheavily tipped as potential winners?

“Reaching the semi-finals has to be amust for England,” he answered.

“If we get to a straight knockout withonly three other teams then anythingcan happen.

“This is going to be areally open World Cup.

“Some of the ‘big’nations like Argentina andFrance have struggledthrough qualifying andwill be determined tomake an impact in themain event, and othersmaller nations will be outto enjoy themselves and tocause a few upsets.

“England should be fullofconfidence after the way

they reached the finals and, while I’mnot going to say we can win it, if we hittop form then the last four is definitelyapossibility and, after that, it’s in the lapof the gods.”

MELBOOTHExaminerSportsEditor

THIS will be Wayne Rooney’s WorldCup.

That’s the confident prediction ofTown legend Andy Booth – and heknows a thing or two about strikers.

Now a season into retirement afternetting 150 goals for his hometownclub, Booth reckons Rooney is ready toperform to his best on the biggest stageof them all.

And if he does, former EnglandUnder 21 cap Booth reckons that willgive Fabio Capello’s side their bestchance to progressing and doing well.

“I reckon only a handful of playersare guaranteed a start for

England and Wayne Rooney iscertainly the first name on thelist,” said Booth, now ClubAmbassador at the GalpharmStadium.

“If we are to do really well inthe tournament, then Rooney isgoing to have a big say in it all.

“People talk about world classplayers and Rooney, for mymoney, is up in the top three, no

doubt about that.“He loves to perform on the

bigoccasions and I think this could well beWayne Rooney’s tournament.

“Last time he struggled with aninjury in the build-up and then whenwe went out against Portugal he gotsent-off.

“Four years on he’s a better player, more experienced and I reckon SouthAfrica will be his stage – one where heshows everyone he’s theworld-renowned player we know he is.”

Booth was surprised that Arsenalwinger Theo Walcott was left out of thesquad, but he still believes England canrealistically aim to be one of thesemi-finalists in the first week of next
